Lyrics:
Ah we're drinking and we're dancing
And the band is really happening
And the Johnny Walker wisdom running high
And my very sweet companion
She's the Angel of Compassion
She's rubbing half the world against her thigh
And every drinker every dancer
Lifts a happy face to thank her
The fiddler fiddles something so sublime
All the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
It's closing time
Yeah the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
It's closing time
Ah we're lonely, we're romantic
And the cider's laced with acid
And the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
And the moon is swimming naked
And the summer night is fragrant
With a mighty expectation of relief
So we struggle and we stagger
Down the snakes and up the ladder
To the tower where the blessed hours chime
And I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But closing time
I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But Closing time, closing time
I loved you for your beauty
But that doesn't make a fool of me:
You were in it for your beauty too
And I loved you for your body
There's a voice that sounds like God to me
Declaring, declaring, declaring that your body's really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
And I love you now there's nothing left
But sorrow and a sense of overtime
And I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
It's closing time
Yeah I missed you since our place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
It's closing time
Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing
But there's nothing really happening
And the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
Gets me fumbling gets me laughing
She's a hundred but she's wearing
Something tight
And I lift my glass to the awful truth
Which you can't reveal to the ears of youth
Except to say it isn't worth a dime
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
And it's once for the devil and it's once for Christ
But the boss don't like these dizzy heights
We're busted in the blinding lights
Of closing time
The whole damn place goes crazy twice
And it's once for the devil and it's once for Christ
But the boss don't like these dizzy heights
We're busted in the blinding lights
Busted in the blinding lights
Of closing time
Oh the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
It's closing time
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
It's closing time
I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
It's closing time
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But closing time
I loved you when our love was blessed
I love you now there's nothing left
But closing time
I miss you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
It's closing time
Had the honor to see him perform again here in Los Angeles a month or two before he died. During the concert, Cohen commented that he'd turn 80 the following week, "So now i can finally start smoking again and not give a shit." Along with wisdom, he always owned an now immortal sense of humor.
my wife who i met when i was 16 died a few weeks ago,,now i started drinking again and dont give shit

Richard, Leonard died in November 2016 and his last concert was in Auckland New Zealand on December 21, 2013, his last concert in Los Angeles was on November 2012. Sorry but you have not got your dates correct
One of the most underrated Cohen songs, actually one of the most underrated songs of all time.
yeah, beautiful piece... real nice
Is not the original lyrics .... different version as a lot of his songs or .... am I wrong...
Whats the original song?
She’s a hundred but she’s wearing something tight
My favourite thing of Leonard's that he ever did
The coolest fedora wearing cat of all time. A genuine genius. A wordsmith for the ages.
Lyrics are alone enough to compose 10 hit songs of today. What a legend...
Yes, good to listen to it again. I was young when it came out and we were mostly excited when he said 'the women tear their blouses off', because at the clubs we hoped they would.

Except that big hits were never composed of fine lyrics. The hag of commerce is deaf to such humourous subtleties.
Truly amazing lyrics. I don't begrudge Dylan his Nobel Prize, but damn, Leonard Cohen deserved one at least as much.
Nobel has kind of taken a beaten lately. But I think in part Dylan got it for his 'neverending tour'. Leonard never toured til his manager ran off with his money. For pure originality yeah, he's definitely up there with Dylan. Unlike so many others, when he uses poetry and allegory you get the feeling he actually means something by it even if you don't understand it. Although this one is pretty straightforward.
Set myself the challenge of memorising them. Success!

I had the great fortune to see him perform a few years ago in Boston. The crowd, as you imagine, consisted basically every middle aged English professor in New England. Cohen was 72 at the time, but he played for FOUR HOURS, singing his heart out for every song. His band was killer, his backup singers were like angels. And then as an encore he played Closing Time. I'll never forget it.
Sounds like your fondest memories🥰 Bet you went with someone special😉
His shows were unlike any other artist. I saw him 20+ years ago by accident. Lucky me. Been a fan since

I think this song is seriously underrated and couldn't agree more with your comment!
I keep returning to this song every now and then, it's such a brilliant, bittersweet hommage to that feeling when you have to admit the night did not last forever, the drinks are finished and you did not redeem the world. Time to say good-bye to the bartender, take on your coat and face the first rays of the sun as you walk home in the dawn.
My Dad passed away a few months ago. My fondest memory with my Dad was when we went to Leonard Cohen's concert at the Mile One! The best ever! It is closing time for a great Canadian poet, and humble man. A Montrealer like me. His loss is huge to music. Very sad day.
RIP sweet man
A great Canadian poet...?? How sad you limit his genius to your own narrow minded view of the world. He was a great worldwide poet who happened to be born in Canada....there's a difference..!
Kianu Collis Why do you feel the need to diminish his worth as a Canadian. It was our great joy that he was Canadian. I meant no insult by the comment. He is claimed as Canadian because when you are born here, that is who you are. We are proud to claim him. We share him with the world but he is a Montrealer first and foremost. I'm sorry you are offended by that. I'm certainly proud of it.
Well said!!

My favorite line in this, “and I lift my glass to the awful truth that you can’t reveal to the ears of youth except to say it isn’t worth a damn.” I am also fond of saying “this place is deader than Heaven on Saturday night.
This song is so... Wistful. That's the only word for it. It's not really outright tragic. It's just a quiet, far off memory that makes you smile and shed a tear at the same time. It's so 'real' that it feels both profound and practical at the same time. All set to this rolling, rambling tempo that hits you like an avalanche and gives it a sense of something timeless, not just something that happened once in one place but that's always happening somewhere. The sheer quality, with minimal flourish, of the vocals and that damn violin in the background, ties it all together in a neat little package that feels so much shorter than it is because you've been in a trance the entire time. I just, it's a really good song okay? It took longer to explain all the things I like about it than it took to listen to the damn thing.
You didn't need to denigrate your comments -- they were beautiful and true.
I agree completely with the reply above. And also with the initial comment. This song for me is utterly evocative of the mood I've had many times, towards the end of, or after, a liberal and energetic night out. It captures something very real.
Great descriptive words you wrote....
God bless you, oh you hopeless romantic, thinker and just someone being alive. Thank you. You keep me sane, you.

RIP Leonard. A great, great man. The world is darker without you.
This song is genius and the backing vocals are killer!
Damn, Leonard knows how to write a song.
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, who is himself a world class songwriter, said Leonard Cohen is the best songwriter he's ever heard, and quite possible the best in the world. That's pretty high praise coming from the likes of a legendary songwriter! ❤🤘✌️👍

20 years ago, I heard this song for the first time. 20 years later, it's still my favorite song.
I heard it first when I was 18. I am 28 and still listening.
The first time I heard this song (that I remember) was in about late October or early November in 2015. My dad and I were taking a road trip to California from Missouri and we stopped in a town called Oakley for the night. This song was playing at a bar and grill. I had a feeling it was Leonard Cohen, but I didn't know for sure and I didn't know the song so I asked the guys playing pool near the jukebox. They told me it's Closing Time, then I downloaded the song as soon as I got back to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sorry to bore you with all that, but I felt like sharing that short story for some reason.
For a moment I thought you were going to make this into a joke, like "They told me it was Closing Time, so I finished my beer and took off... never did find out what the song was."

Absolute gem of a song, written about the famous (now closed) Toronto club The Matador, where folks would usually head after other bars closed given that the Matador was open until 5am. Cohen performed there, along with other greats like Loretta Lynn, Joni Mitchell, Stompin' Tom, and more. Lovely nod to a historic piece of the Toronto music scene.

I’m honoured to say that my wife and I first got the pleasure of seeing Leopard Cohen in concert in Dublin about 30yrs ago, maybe even more, & on so many more occasions again in Dublin, & the utter pleasure we got will never be forgotten. We’ve listened to his music ever since & will continue to do so, as his music is so much more than words, there’s always so much more depth in the meanings of his music, including the very pleasure that is experienced by the words, we could say we have a favourite piece from all his recordings but to say that we would be fooling ourselves...! Sadly the light went out on one of music’s masters when this master met his Closing Time, you will never be forgotten as your music is Worldly, RIP
Hello Ann..
You should NEVER CLOSE that place full with nice people! I like Cohen's music and lyrics.
Leanard would say now opening time God bless you and your family 🙏❤️ Michael
Thank you, he was one of the most interesting artist ever. Love for women and also love for God always in Leonard Cohen"s songs.
RIP | Sadness - his last album was his goodbye - he was the first Canadian poet I discovered when I came to this land many moons ago; still have some of his cassettes from the 80’s - and a collection of CD … He had a good life - may he rest in peace and his music/poetry accompany us for a long, long time … :( LCA
Hector L. Campos He had a great life! And in his own words death itself is not a tragedy.
Who else would have dared to express these words in song? Unique and unforgettable...
True
thank you cohen - hvala ti moj prijatelju
Hello Emese

My favorite Cohen song of all time...shared with my favorite girl of all time 🥰😚🤗💘💙💖💞💓❤🧡💜❤🔥
❤🔥💙💜❤🧡💚🤍 Your girl who loves you so much 💘
My LIFE would have been a far more barren place, were it not for Leonard's Art.
Closing time it is then. RIP Leonard
Love this song and video. When ever I hear people say Cohen's songs are depressing I tell them to listen to this and they'll soon change their mind. Johnny Walker wisdom..... love it.
+TheMister Mann The style of music affects people in different manners, depending on what they are experiencing in life. If someone is going through depressive moments then this song can make them think of what they are sensing, feeling, as much as those who look at this song as a way of feeling good about themselves.Personally I like the song and rhythm.
..."except to say it isn't worth a damn". Makes me cry every time...this is an upbeat song with such a depressing meaning to me - and I love it,
.. what ever floats your boat :-))
the people who says he's depressing dont understand what true happiness is
We should be carefully to say what others dont understand just because they dont have the same taste of good quality as we have.
I was in Grade 1 when I ask a teacher to put this on the radio... He found it. A memory that will never go away.
Our poet, our voice, our man...how you are missed...our Leonard, our soul.
Hello Lucas
Mr.. Cohen... You ROCK. Always loved your poetry, your music and your philosophy. Keep on rocking, my kindred spirit. Thank you for expressing in music what I was not able to, but felt so very much.
Well said.
My very first concert my gorgeous girl took me . What a great experience and pleasure to listen to this great talent . Sad day for all when he moved to another place thank you .
Perfectly said.
Nice way to put it; he'd call you his "friend", I'm sure.
Just starting to listen to this brilliant artist. I do feel a connection to his music. Soulful, spirit, deep music.
This was shot in 1992, a year before I was born. 22 years later, I am dancing to this and it makes my life better.
It will never be Closing Time for you Leonard may you live on forever and may your God go with you
A professional entertainer and writer for many generations, you will be missed rest well my friend.
Ah, this cheered me up. Glad I got to see him live before he died
You're Lucky :(
