Lyrics:
Ah we're drinking and we're dancing
And the band is really happening
And the Johnny Walker wisdom running high
And my very sweet companion
She's the Angel of Compassion
She's rubbing half the world against her thigh
And every drinker every dancer
Lifts a happy face to thank her
The fiddler fiddles something so sublime
All the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
It's closing time
Yeah the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
It's closing time
Ah we're lonely, we're romantic
And the cider's laced with acid
And the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
And the moon is swimming naked
And the summer night is fragrant
With a mighty expectation of relief
So we struggle and we stagger
Down the snakes and up the ladder
To the tower where the blessed hours chime
And I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But closing time
I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But Closing time, closing time
I loved you for your beauty
But that doesn't make a fool of me:
You were in it for your beauty too
And I loved you for your body
There's a voice that sounds like God to me
Declaring, declaring, declaring that your body's really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
And I love you now there's nothing left
But sorrow and a sense of overtime
And I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
It's closing time
Yeah I missed you since our place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
It's something in between, I guess
It's closing time
Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing
But there's nothing really happening
And the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
Gets me fumbling gets me laughing
She's a hundred but she's wearing
Something tight
And I lift my glass to the awful truth
Which you can't reveal to the ears of youth
Except to say it isn't worth a dime
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
And it's once for the devil and it's once for Christ
But the boss don't like these dizzy heights
We're busted in the blinding lights
Of closing time
The whole damn place goes crazy twice
And it's once for the devil and it's once for Christ
But the boss don't like these dizzy heights
We're busted in the blinding lights
Busted in the blinding lights
Of closing time
Oh the women tear their blouses off
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
It's closing time
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
It's closing time
I swear it happened just like this:
A sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
It's closing time
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But closing time
I loved you when our love was blessed
I love you now there's nothing left
But closing time
I miss you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
It's closing time

  • Had the honor to see him perform again here in Los Angeles a month or two before he died. During the concert, Cohen commented that he'd turn 80 the following week, "So now i can finally start smoking again and not give a shit." Along with wisdom, he always owned an now immortal sense of humor.

  • Truly amazing lyrics. I don't begrudge Dylan his Nobel Prize, but damn, Leonard Cohen deserved one at least as much.

    @JohnSchoffstall@JohnSchoffstall Жыл бұрын
    • Nobel has kind of taken a beaten lately. But I think in part Dylan got it for his 'neverending tour'. Leonard never toured til his manager ran off with his money. For pure originality yeah, he's definitely up there with Dylan. Unlike so many others, when he uses poetry and allegory you get the feeling he actually means something by it even if you don't understand it. Although this one is pretty straightforward.

  • I had the great fortune to see him perform a few years ago in Boston. The crowd, as you imagine, consisted basically every middle aged English professor in New England. Cohen was 72 at the time, but he played for FOUR HOURS, singing his heart out for every song. His band was killer, his backup singers were like angels. And then as an encore he played Closing Time. I'll never forget it.

    • Kianu Collis Why do you feel the need to diminish his worth as a Canadian. It was our great joy that he was Canadian. I meant no insult by the comment. He is claimed as Canadian because when you are born here, that is who you are. We are proud to claim him. We share him with the world but he is a Montrealer first and foremost. I'm sorry you are offended by that. I'm certainly proud of it.

  • This song is so... Wistful. That's the only word for it. It's not really outright tragic. It's just a quiet, far off memory that makes you smile and shed a tear at the same time. It's so 'real' that it feels both profound and practical at the same time. All set to this rolling, rambling tempo that hits you like an avalanche and gives it a sense of something timeless, not just something that happened once in one place but that's always happening somewhere. The sheer quality, with minimal flourish, of the vocals and that damn violin in the background, ties it all together in a neat little package that feels so much shorter than it is because you've been in a trance the entire time. I just, it's a really good song okay? It took longer to explain all the things I like about it than it took to listen to the damn thing.

    • The first time I heard this song (that I remember) was in about late October or early November in 2015. My dad and I were taking a road trip to California from Missouri and we stopped in a town called Oakley for the night. This song was playing at a bar and grill. I had a feeling it was Leonard Cohen, but I didn't know for sure and I didn't know the song so I asked the guys playing pool near the jukebox. They told me it's Closing Time, then I downloaded the song as soon as I got back to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sorry to bore you with all that, but I felt like sharing that short story for some reason.

We’ve listened to his music ever since & will continue to do so, as his music is so much more than words, there’s always so much more depth in the meanings of his music, including the very pleasure that is experienced by the words, we could say we have a favourite piece from all his recordings but to say that we would be fooling ourselves...! Sadly the light went out on one of music’s masters when this master met his Closing Time, you will never be forgotten as your music is Worldly, RIP

  • Love this song and video. When ever I hear people say Cohen's songs are depressing I tell them to listen to this and they'll soon change their mind. Johnny Walker wisdom..... love it.

    • +TheMister Mann The style of music affects people in different manners, depending on what they are experiencing in life. If someone is going through depressive moments then this song can make them think of what they are sensing, feeling, as much as those who look at this song as a way of feeling good about themselves.Personally I like the song and rhythm.
