Ryan Gosling Is a Complicated Heartthrob

2018 ж. 11 Қар.

When you think of Ryan Gosling, you probably think of the smooth and charming heartthrob that is the handsome lead in sappy romantic dramas. But why do you think that? Because of The Notebook, right? But what else? The Notebook certainly put Gosling on the map, but when it comes down to it, it was a rather isolated role for the Canadian-born actor. Gosling seems to have been typecast after just one “defining” role. With films like Drive, Only God Forgives, Gangster Squad, and Blade Runner 2049, he has actually portrayed more stoic tough guys than romantic leads, especially in the films of Nicolas Winding Refn. And his other “romantic” films actually aren’t all that romantic: Blue Valentine, for example, takes a brutal and scathing view of its central relationship, and we all know about the gut-punch at the end of Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. But regardless of how you view him, one thing is for sure: He remains one of the most versatile and talented actors working today.

  • I personally think one of the best quality of an actor can be that you can blindly go in to watch his films, not even see the trailer and come out satisfied to death. No matter what the film is, he always brings a stand out performance. His film choices are excellent. According to me, Ryan Gosling is one of the finest actors working today along with Jake Gyllenhaal. I just wish they both really get more recognition for how great they are.

  • Notably, even in films like Drive, he is still in love with this girl (who he doesn’t even know for that long) and goes to extreme lengths to protect her. I think his persisting heartthrob image (apart from his looks and puppy-dog eyes) comes from not just the typical romance story The Notebook, but the general tendency of him to play roles that don’t betray too far from this “caring and faithful boyfriend” image, regardless of the actual personality of his characters (funny or cool or “bad boy” or silent/tough) and the plot endings. La La Land doesn’t have a happy ending but c’mon, his character is a hopeless romantic and a complete heartthrob.

    @HanQ28@HanQ285 жыл бұрын
    • You're absolutely right, he has stuck to the "caring and faithful boyfriend" image as a subplot in almost all of his movies including Blue Valentine, Lars and the Real Girl, even 2049 where he was in love with the holographic image/robot, even in Crazy Stupid Love once he fell for Emma Stone

But in Drive, he takes on a gentle giant kind of character who can snap at any moment. He'll go from stoically standing with a gentle smile (any time he's with his neighbor or her son) to a cold and calculating survivor(motel shootout), to an unhinged killer(elevator fight).

He has minor bedroom scenes in a lot of his movies that are not romantic, but it isn't needed to put the point across. I love the bedroom scene in "Crazy, Stupid Love" and it is obvious in "La La Land that Sebastian and Mia love each other, but no big physical love scenes. • I feel like Ryan Gosling's *signature move* is basically him being a loner, ascends and then becomes the hero in the end. Most notably in my favorite movies Blade Runner 2049 and Drive. I like those types of movies, always relating to them, idk why

  • He’s now beyond the notebook and his good looks really though it’s true that the role it’s still one of his most known characters which it’s a shame having far better movies and roles in his filomography but because he is so talented and smart about his career he made sure that being that guy for the notebook doesn’t matter and we’ll keep getting wonderful interesting characters from him because of that, one of my most favorites 💜

  • He's the most underrated comedic actor working today. He stole every single scene he was in "The Nice Guys" as well as "The Big Short". His comedic flare reminds me of Gene Wilder.

  • Back then I always looked at him like the typical pretty boy type actor okay acting but the looks carries him. That’s as up until very recently, I watched him in blade runner and blue valentine and holy shit. Man one of my favorite actors.
