Between 1983 and 2009, Sri Lanka was engulfed in Civil War. There was one group above all who would dominate this conflict. Their name would become infamous around the world as they fought for a Tamil homeland on an island dominated by a Sinhalese majority. Using suicide squads and child soldiers they would fight the world’s fourth largest army to a standstill and assassinated presidents and prime ministers. Were they terrorists or were they freedom fighters? This is the story of the Tamil Tigers.

CORRECTION: At 3:41 I say that half the population of Jaffna had been Sinhalese. This is incorrect. On looking back at my sources I found this from Gordon Weiss: "Prior to the rise of the Tamil Tigers, around 10 per cent of the population of Jaffna had been Sinhalese who had peacefully coexisted with their neighbours for generations". Other sources (e.g. Wikipedia) put the number lower than that. I've tried to put in a correction card on the video itself but it hasn't worked. My apologies and thank you to those people who pointed this out. Secondly, there are many comments on this video accusing me of bias. While of course it is impossible to be completely neutral, and on such a sensitive issue it is probably inevitable that many people think I have a bias one way or another, the one thing I would point out is that this video is meant to be watched as part of a series. Of course this video focuses on the LTTE and what they did, and spends comparatively less time on the actions of the Sri Lankan army. That is because in the next few videos I will be focusing on the other combatant in this conflict. After that I will, no doubt, get accusations coming from the other side. Ultimately, I hope, I will have achieved some sort of balance and, I must say, I still stand by almost all of the information presented so far in this series (with the exception of the correction above).
Gordon Weiss statistic is also completely wrong, likely got from hear say. Census data is clear, for most of the 19th and 20th century the area was 99% Tamil speaking: www.np.gov.lk/pdf/Statistical-Inofrmation-2010.pdf The other statistic that is wildly wrong in this video is the claim that LTTE killed 160 Tamil members of parliament. There has not been the deaths of so many Tamil MPs due to murder full stop, irrespective of perpetrator.
These are some critiques given by another user: There are many downright false and misleading information in your video, which seems to be biased in favour of the Sinhalese/government side. 1) Prabhakaran wasn’t born in a “low caste” but middle. 2) You say over 160 Tamil MPs were killed by the LTTE. could you cite a scholarly literature for this claim that doesn’t ultimately originate from government or other biased Sinhalese sources? 3) You briefly mention the Black July but severely downplay its significance, while you expand upon far less significant LTTE attacks. It was a state-sponsored genocidal pogrom against Tamil civilians, killing thousands, and displacing many more. It was this that led to the exponential growth of the LTTE from a handful of youths. 4) You mention the November 1984 LTTE massacre of civilians (at Kent and Dollar Farm) but what you omit is that these were convicts and their families settled on land seized from Tamils after expelling its occupants. You clearly haven’t done your research but are only parroting claims from shady sources. 6) You rationalize SL army atrocities by saying it’s “understandable” why they would behave like that given the circumstances but you don’t qualify LTTE atrocities in the same way but instead you detail them without any context. clearly shows your bias. For example, what triggered the Anuradhapura massacre was this massacre carried out in Prabhakaran's home town: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_Valvettiturai_massacre 7) You list several atrocities attributed to the LTTE but you manage to mention only one SL Army massacre of Tamil civilians, that too tucked away toward the end where an average viewer probably wouldn’t get to and qualifying it as a “retaliation”. Prabhakaran - Karaiyar, Pottu Amman - Vellalar, Tamilselvan - Dalit. The organisation was not formed around caste, but around Tamil nationalism. Btw unless you have access to the LTTE's member caste % then all these claims are based on conjecture, not solid statistics. That has now been disproven. They were very open to the Muslims at the beginning. But it did not last as the majority of Muslims refused to identify with the Tamils and Tamil Eelam. As a sri lankan who moved to Australia, i will tell you that while i may not have much understanding on the diplomatic and political environment of this war, as many people seem to call out misinformation and have different stories, that this is the problem with 3rd world and second world countries. The political figures can take advantage of the people and start meaningless conflicts for their own benefits. Neither the sri lankans nor the tamils benefitted from the war and deaths were caused for no reason other than to line the pockets or ego of some corrupt politician.

Don’t spread lies. The Sinhalese didn’t make up 50% of the Jaffna population before the Tigers emerged. According to official 1971 census by the government, Sinhalese only made up 2.9% of the population, while Tamils 95.5%. You think the native Aboriginal hunter gatherers of the island did not lose land when civilised man arrived from northern India. You missed the part where Indian government trained, armed and sponsored Tamil militants back in the 80's. Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) set up 32 training camps all over India to train 6 Sri Lankan Tamil insurgent groups.

Recent statisstics put it more around 98 percent, in jaffna, with the population percentage in the overall country as 75 percent. Theres a reason that the main people in turkey are the turkish, and in Mexico are Mexicans, same as how in sri lanka the main people are the sinhalese

In particular, we should explore the events surrounding the Black July riots in 1983. The government's perspective is not the only one, and it's essential to speak with local Tamils who have witnessed the true atrocities committed by Buddhist extremists. It's crucial to avoid bias and acknowledge the genuine pain and suffering that Tamils have endured, and continue to face today. In the north-east region, there is currently one army personnel for every five civilians. Tamils have demanded peace and equal rights since the end of British colonization, but these basic rights have been denied. Government forces have committed horrific crimes, including rape and massacres, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. As a result, Tamil women have taken up arms and joined the Tigers to retaliate. For them, it is better to die fighting for freedom than to suffer rape and murder at the hands of the ruthless Buddhist forces.

@@usernameis9157 The problem started with since the 1948 Ceylon Citizenship Act where a sizable Malaiyaha Tamils were disenfranchised by D.S. Senanayaka government. Then Sinhala Only Act No 33. of 1956 during SWRD's time and later pogroms initiated against Tamils in late 1950s. Language issue is the heart of this problem which was exacerbated through the Standardization Act in the 1970s by Sirimavo government where merit based university entrace was changed to a quota system limiting minority representation in government services and science. It is the continued marginalization that pushed some to resort to armed conflict. Tamil politicians are also to be blamed as well. However, most acts implemented were populist moves by then governments. Further, Tigers is an organization that is not representative of the Tamil civilian. In that case, projecting hate on a community because of the atrocities committed by a terror group is not right. Even if you forget about the Sri Lankan Tamil, the issues faced by Indian Tamils are still not addressed. They largely remain a stateless group with limited opportunities to upward social mobility. While the video provides good insight to the rebel group and their brutality, I would expect the producer to make a distinction between the rebels and the civilians and how marginalization of minority civilians occurred since independence from the Brits who are also directly responsible for the plight we are all in at present.

LTTE was formed to demand Tamil Eelam and reducing caste discrimination of upper caste Sl tamils on middle to low caste. They wanted middle and low caste to live in harmony not only upper caste. Look up articles on Prabhakran criticizing the Tamil Hindu Society was based on caste and gender inequality. One of the reason LTTe was formed. Prabhakaran who belong to a Karaiyar caste wanted Eelam with no caste discrimination and unity as a whole. Most educated upper caste sl (conservative, religious) didn't like LTTE(mostly) representing Tamil Nationalism. LTTE assissinated upper caste leaders - doctors, mayors , lawyers and politicans. Most upper caste sl tamil left the countries in 80s. LTTE was mostly middle to low caste cadres because LTTE opened opportunities to oppressed caste like never before. Most oppressed caste LTTE cadres parents worked at someones house and had no basic human rights as they were being oppressed by the upper caste. There is interview of LTTE cadres discussing how LTTE opened opportunities which their parents never had. Some cadres mentioned their parents worked as maid. There was a lot of Vellalar organization such as TULF who wanted Tamil Eelam without violence. However, LTTE killed most of these upper caste leaders. Why? If these upper caste ended up getting Tamil Eelam then there will be caste. Why did LTTE killed upper caste leaders who wanted to help Prabhakaran? Why was there no freedom of speech under LTTE ruling? Why did LTTE killed anyone who questioned their motives and ideologies? Why did LTTE forced and kidnapped children from oppressed to fight for Tamil Eelam not upper caste children? If the fight was with Sl government, why did LTTE killed innocent Sinhalese and Tamils? N the Tamils never knew such things until the Brahmins spreaded these ideology in the ancient time . Caste has been the biggest problem ever since . I lived and travelled in Sri Lanka for over a year in 78/79 just before all hell broke loose . My buddy and I had driven there overland from Germany in an old Mercedes van. I made many friends particularly among intellectuals in Colombo but really all over. I so enjoy seeing all the places I visited and often spent a lot of time … .I do remember hearing then from some of my local friends that : ‘if nothing changes here soon this place will just blow up…’

Most mainstream material available on the LTTE was provided by the Sri Lanka government. This was part of their diplomatic strategy to delegitimise the Tamil freedom struggle and to perceive the right to self determination as apolitical by providing false narratives and false facts. I request you to further research into why the war started and how the same mistakes are ongoing. Your video is adding fuel to the chauvinistic nationalism of the radical Sinhalese. Please look into figures such as Anagarika Darmapala and how he united the Sinhalese by turning them against Tamils. The Mahavmasa mindset he instilled is still present as you will see in this comment section. Also Tamil key figures such as Chelvanayakam conducted peaceful non-violence ‘satyagraha’ protests for many years following national independence to which the state and the Sinhalese often responded with violence. After 30 years of repeated killing of the Tamils the 1983 war broke out by the LTTE. Similar tension is now happening completely perpetuated by the SL government. If you do research into the LTTE please differentiate any information amongst other militant groups who are often also codified under the term ‘rebels or tigers’ this includes EPDP and alike there were 37+ orgs. The SL state often ties the atrocities with the LTTE as well as the Tamil’s plight to aid their mission in delegitimising the cause. Innocent people died from both sides died due to LTTE , SL gov and IPFK. Among the SL tamil community, the low caste Sl tamils were affected the most because LTTE was founded by a middle caste man and recruited mostly middle to low SL tamils. Their motive was seeking Tamil Eelam and abolishing the caste system. Most upper caste fled the country. Most upper caste are religious people and never believed in LTTE ideologies. LTTE agenda had mostly anti hindu acts (e.g suicide , harming others etc). Before, LTTE there was upper caste organization that wanted Tamil Eelam without violence but LTTE assassinated them. SL gov committed horrible crime against the Tamil woman , children. Some of their crimes have been documented in Haiti.
