I kind of love how the mistake is King to rook 2 (Ka7), and how Moriarty is diagnosed with acute narcissism earlier in the movie by Sherlock, Moriarty's play and character are intrinsically linked - he sees himself as the king, to his own demise. It's like his personality flaws lose him his fortune and also the game of chess. Brilliant screenplay!

Yeah rook blocks at least prolongs mate, but I’m pretty sure the position was dead lost for black even before accepting the queen sac. This was actually based on a real game that was played out differently with black resigning in the end.

People usually criticize this scene since Moriarty is consistently losing, but that's the whole idea. Sherlock had the upper hand the whole time, both in the chess game and IRL, only Moriarty wasn't aware of the latter. So the game reflects their real-life conflict from Sherlock's perspective, not Moriarty's.

Moriarty said that it's human nature to seek conflict and thus war is inevitable. Donating his stuff to fund that organisation is Sherlock's little jab back for that indicating that humans are also capable of bringing relief from tragedies of conflict and don't have to be fixed by human nature. It also serves to piss him off.

Of course, the movie also skips whatever Moriarty's last move was, but his queen takes knight pawn also makes no real sense due to the fact that he already knows he is mate in 1. A last move check that has nothing to follow it up when you are mate in 1 is the action of either an idiot that can't read the board or a petulant child.
