Since the species is not native to Florida, they are not protected by state law and poachers can legally capture the birds and their chicks for the lucrative pet trade. Parrots are not protected from poaching in Florida because they are not native to the area. What are your thoughts on these wild birds being taken from their homes?
Idk. Macaws are cool, i used to have one on roblox but thats another story
Noah Martella lol
It shouldn't even have to be a question on whether an animal is a native or a foreigner, poaching should not be allowed in the first place
National Geographic - it’s despicable!
I vote save the birds by finding solutions to stop using fossil fuels. Change the Florida law. Start using reusable energy to help reduce co2. I love birds. When there gone there gone forever. There more breath taking then roblox. Would you rather see a parrot in real life or in roblox? I say real life. # save the parrots

Anybody else have a soft spot for birds
Yeah, especially having 2 birds of my own that I adopted from a terrible condition and household.
@x mam you took the time to look at the comments under the question, your fault that you're so bothered by it. Comment just said who else had a soft spot for birds, so I answered.

I never knew parrots lived in Miami.
x I Wolfy x Thers a bunch here in southern California too
Wanna hear something nuts. There are wild parakeets in Holland, saw them in Amsterdam. But theyre actually thriving even though its quite cold there. They used to be pets
There's a bunch of Quaker parrots around League City and Freeport TX. They've established themselves and have been around for years.
There are Monk parrots in New Jersey.
they don't. some did survive Hurricane Andrew but nothing in our landscaped suburbs really support them.
these birds are gorgeous
We agree, Kim! It's a shame that these creatures that have called Miami home for decades are being ripped away from their environments.
then we all need to join hands and might for a rigorous campaign to protect them.....they are invaluable and thank you NAT GEO for setting the way already
@@NatGeo Those parrots are not from Miami, USA don't have native parrots except "Psittacara holochlorus"
They sure are!

This is beyond heart breaking. Stealing them from their nest and also breaking their legs. People are sick. Humans we need to do better
Yeah
They should be in wild but yeah its their choice
Take another look at the video, the broken leg is from a fake prop bird, not a real bird, other wise I agree with you.
@@Cypress123 that is showing how the nets with that much force breaks the legs of the real birds. Of course they are not going to do that to a real bird to show you. Do you not understand that?
They're very beautiful creatures. It's no wonder these birds is in very high demand. Well, I think it has always been something people are very fond of. Would be a shame if such species starts to disappear slowly 😞 Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Azliana Lyana do you have pet parrots like I do 🤔🐦🇨🇦👍
Sarah Redwood Nope, no parrots. Only a dog and a cat. My neighbour has one though, very talkative and friendly but is missing a leg.

MOTELS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE NOWADAYS, THEY'LL PROBABLY MIGRATE TO TRUMP TOWER.
We have non-native wild parrots here in Southern California also and they've been studied thoroughly and the conclusion is they are not invasive and have no impact on native species. It's pretty cool seeing them flying around.
Beautiful birds are like the cherry on top of an amazing view of the natural world around us imo
They might not have an impact in the wild but they are invasive
@@juanlugarciamorato5177"Invasive" means it's competing with endemics for niches, not coming into a new area. Non-invasive & invasive species are both "introduced", but the Parrots themselves feed on mostly ornamental trees.
This destroys my heart. I can feel their terror and their pain. It is awful what is being done to those sweet birds 😢😢😢
This is a shame I didn't even know they lived in Miami and I live 10 minutes away
I was fishing at a park by my house in kendall, miami when I saw a group of like 5 blue macaws. They're gorgeous, super loud too.
These birds are so beautiful and peaceful I would LOVE to see these amazing creatures fly by my house
God bless you lady I’m all of a sudden obsessed with the macaws
I still remember going to Miami Beach and hearing parrots screeching between tall buildings, unforgettable, Iguanas as well make the state more tropical and unique.
They are blessed to see such beautiful creatures, I am a bird lover myself and it just breaks my heart when I heard that macaws and wild parrots are declining.
My happiness in the beginning of this video turned to horror. Some people are bad news.
Who ever disliked the video should be ashamed
why? the music of this video annoyed me. i didnt dislike but many people can dislike for many reason.
MaRnUs VeNtEr they could dislike the video because of the poachers and hunters right?
i disliked it because they wasted half the video before getting to the point...but there wasn't much of a point. What are they doing to fix it?
@@johnames6430 The point is to spread awareness ;) And hopefullly if many are aware, many will take measures to help against poaching by for example calling the police, like the video suggested. The first half was to inform, give context and stimulate sympathy.

It's just beautiful seeing these lovely birds. You guys are so lucky. :)
This is horrible and their needs to be laws in place for protecting them. Even though they are not a native species! Pretty soon those beautiful birds will become endangered and then become extinct. Miami is lucky to have them and it’s time for peoples to appreciate them! Leave the parrots free! Thank You to the wonderful lady that made this video clip and brought attention to the plight of the parrots!
You and the lady are morons. "Threats to natives: Members of the parrot family carry Newcastle disease, identified in 1971, which can infect native songbirds, game birds, domestic chickens and turkeys, and other exotic bird species. The native bird species can be infected by smuggled exotic birds and birds not properly quarantined that are released into the wild. This species also breeds in cavities which might limit the number available to native cavity nesters."
Melissa Smith finally someone else who isn’t an idiot and thinks about the native species.
I think it's a moronic thing to say that these invasive species, albeit beautiful, from central and south America, are hunted in Miami until they are endangered and extinct? Ummm, what? No. That's not how it works.
They are a transient species, not an invasive species. The Miami population could become extinct if their population values minimize.
You didn't provide a citation, and I could not locate an author or date to access the publication. The Miami population are transient. They are noninvasive. From what I could discern of your excerpt, the concern is pet species being released into the environment, not transients. Improperly released pet species always introduce possibility of vector transmission. The issue is we won't know until it occurs. However, other species, native and nonnative, provide a continuous flow of disease and parasite transmission all the time, every day. This is normal. It should be noted that transient species are functionally native, as is the case with the Florida macaw.
These birds are endangered in South America and now you’re wiping them out here too... non native beneficial animals should be protected
Actually, blue and yellow macaws are officially listed as LC (least concern). Where I lived in Ecuador they were a very common sight.
Macaws are NOT native to Florida, and therefore, should not be a concern when taking measures to sustain nature in Florida. Florida has enough problems with keeping their native flora and fauna alive.
Save the parrots
@@me2525 Yes, indeed some macaws are not endangered. But I believe most of macaw breeds are threatened, some have already gone extinct sadly due to deforestation and loss of habitat. :(
@@mcrainbowoeslak1603 I saw somewhere the bird species of the movie Rio have gone extinct.

25 years in jail and a fine of 10.000$ per stolen bird and that should help the problem a bit Amazing birds
Martin bach it’s an invasive species why should it have protection in its non native range🤨
@@Bugboy_pk its a beautiful specie!
Honesty, that is a little bit extreme. More like 2 years is reasonable.
@@Bugboy_pk If it is nota harm to the environment it is not invasive the macaws are not a threat they aren't invasive they are just non-native.
@@mashintotters858 it's supposed to scare them and think its not worth the risk
Here in my city is so common to see Macaws flying around, we had a project to rescue and let these lovely birds go back to nature, but they always come back to the city. They're native birds here. Everyone knows they shouldn't feed them so the bird won't have the chance to get attached or come back just looking for food...
I love birds, I love to see them fly freely. I liked Daria Feinstein to see how much she cares about Parrot.
I had no idea Miami had parrots! Such beautiful birds
beautiful birds! ;)
Top 10 coolest video on KZhead! Had no clue Parrots were wild in the U.S.
They aren't. Their roots are in escaped pets. They are an invasive species because of humans, just like the iguanas and pythons and carp in the everglades. Just because they are prettier doesn't mean they are meant to be there or don't imbalance the ecosystem.
@@BillM1960 all these species you mentioned are native to my country, sad to see my countrymen smuggling these magnificent birds 😔
Just blissingly gorgeous. These birds are just absolutely stunning.
Smh!! Disgusting They're aren't harming any one. I'm a huge fan of wild birds. I want point of time I used to own a cockatoo and he was so special to me. I just love their colorful vivacious personalities. These type of species they enjoy life you know they enjoy people. they entrust people. And look what the people are doing to them they're killing them and selling them.
They dont belong there. They were introduced.
PantsB4Squares ^^ Invasive species are invasive. Doesn't matter how cool they are.
They are but the majority of the birds supplying the markets are captive bred. theres a huge pet population of them in the US.
They're not invasive. An invasive species is a species that comes in, breeds excessively, and destroys the natural ecosystem. They're non-native, but they have not "invaded." 44 birds went down to 12. Invasive is like 4000 birds.
starsintheysky Any species that does not originally belong to an environment and inadvertently takes resources from native species, is invasive. They've invaded an ecosystem that they did not originate from. A species does not have to destroy the ecosystem it invades. Your definition is wrong.
Beautiful and smart birds
I love it that they have all types of different colors, like blue and yellow, and others
i saw three wild parrots by um this past saturday, i have the pictures, it was an awesome experience i hope to never forget and repeat
They're such a beautiful birds ❤💙💚💛
What's most compelling is the fact that these birds have the equivalent intelligence of a 4 or 5 yr. old human.
So what? Pigs are more intelligent, but people are not saying to set them free. Just because something is dumb... like a rabbit... you think that is ok to kill and eat them, but not a parrot because its intelligent?
@@jase123111 I'd imagine most people don't try to eat parrots because they don't taste great and there aren't very many of them... you'd be better off eating fat seagulls or pigeons, which also probably don't taste quite like chicken. I think people eat the animals that have the meat that they enjoy eating and don't really concern themselves with intelligence, especially because a large majority of people pays a healthy chunk of their salaries to avoid/re-mediate the intelligence they could've fostered. Many people are not even at the IQ they were when they were 5. I've seen plenty of two year old adults that throw major scene at their significant other or child and I've never wanted to eat any of them.
This is an archaic and distorted way of viewing nonhuman intelligence. We're actually very bad at measuring nonhuman intelligence and cognition. It would be more accurate to say an adult macaw has the intelligence of an adult macaw.
@@lapis591 humanity’s definition of intellegence is definitely arbitrary. But animals aren’t exactly sending stuff to Mars. So that should mean something
@@jase123111 Pigs are not more intelligent my friend. pigs have a comparable intelligence of a 2- 3-year-old human. parrot intelligence is around that of a 4- 5-year-old depending on the species, even up to a 6- 7-year-old.
I want to meet this woman what a wonderful person with such a beautiful heart and soul
my poor macaws 🥺 we need to protect them all :(
these macaws belong to Brazil and they’re not in extinction lol
@@dearivers Yes they are. Do some research. There are still native indian tribes in South America that hunt these birds down to make feathered headdresses and costumes for their tribes, therefore killing off these species. They need to be protected here in the US.

Don't pick favorites depending on appearance ;). Even "boring dirty" pigeons have their tasks.
People poach pigeons in NYC to sell for put and take hunting. Poaching pigeons in NYC is illegal.
@@davidstambaugh569 Technically, it's not. Pigeons aren't protected by the Migratory Birds act since they're non-native.
People like you are so annoying. Pigeons are amazing birds with their place on earth. Did you know they’re one of the fastest flying birds alive? Either way, both pigeons and macaws are invasive, so they can’t legally be protected in the US.

These parrot are awesome and all but they arent living in their native range so it’s the right thing to do not many local people seem to get that. That’s why it should be ok for them to be taken out of the Miami and why Florida fishing wildlife shouldn’t have any laws about them in my opinion. Would you rather have them taken in from their native range where they are most likely endangered? The parrots in Miami are still considered invasive cause they complete for the fruits and nuts native birds would eat.
Humans are nonnative, should we get rid of you?
Sarbo the Parrot well heres the difference although some people damage ecosystems and cause polution. We also have the ability to fix the environment they don’t.
I’ll take that as a yes.

Were does that lady think her pet parrots came from? Lol
Exactly my thoughts!
She very clearly states that she found them injured and rescued them.
She rescued them and definitely takes good care of them it’s not like she locks them in a cage 24/7
Catherine Dia NO!!! She "poached" them. She "rescued" perfectly happy wild birds. End of story. God dam!
Plus even before she "saved" the birds. They were brought to Florida from their homes across the oceans. If they never want the catching to happen, they never would have been in Florida the first place.

These “poachers” and their methods are cruel, yes. But don’t divorce their actions from the pet trade that they supply. This woman luring her birds into similar cages as the ones she denounces has the same impact to biodiversity regardless of her intention (her 6 Macaws are also not in the wild, they don’t count towards the 44 that used to be there). I find the same disconnect in my research, people blame poachers and refuse to see how they too are complicit.
Exactly. Many of the people in the comments dont even think about this because they let their emotions drive them.
You know those parrots were rescued by her after a hurricane. I'm not sure you paid attention watching that short 8 minutes video.
She didn't lure them. She rescued one from a hurricane and the rest were given to her. No luring involved. FFS, watch the video.
I would agree with you regarding her first parrot. The lady - according to her story - saved the bird from drowning after the hurricane. So I agree with you regarding this "I saved the bird" statement, because that saving may have been her nice interpretation of capturing the bird. And the bird was probably wild because it would have a ring, and would be registered so she could find the owner. Other birds are not lured in - I saw rings, which means they were bought legally at some point, and she has taken them into custody when original owners could not care for them any more. And that is a very common thing especially with large parrots.
They are rescued macaws. Furthermore, she let them free fly. So if they want to leave they'll just fly away but they always choose to fly back to her. Not complicated.

At the same time, green parrots are invading Paris and other cities and parks in the centre of France (precisely rose-ringed parakeets). Some imported wild species seem to be able to adapt to human environment, at the expense of other species, even native ones.
