  • He's not arguably the Whitecaps best player, he's by far their best player. I've went to see the Whitecaps quite a few times and he's always head and shoulders above any player on the pitch. Genuine class and hardworking. Far too good for the MLS . He'd be one of Scotland's best players and only genuine playmaker (I'm Scottish). I hope we get to see him play for the tartan army soon, as it'd be a huge waste if not.

  • Gauld’s is a great story and shows how if you want to make it to the top you have got to be resilient. Being hyped up at an early age could easily of gone to Ryan’s head which could of crushed him when he got released by Sporting but instead he got his head down and was humble enough to go down a level so he could show what he is about. It just goes to show the mental side of the game is just as significant as technique and physical prowess.

I'm glad he's playing well and enjoying his football and would like to see Clarke call him up even if it's a friendly just to give him a chance to represent his country but like you say players of smaller stature who through no fault of their own got hyped way too much too soon have to work a lot harder than players who offer more physically

  • I'm obviously biased as an American and MLS supporter.. but I do have to say one of the best things about "soccer" here in the US is that we don't mind older players if they are performing. At 27, 28.. Gauld would probably be completely left behind by most European clubs as those older signings are exceptions, not the standard. They likely consider his prime right now, or even a few years back, rather than potentially ahead of him. Old Firm wanted him at 25, would they still want him, objectively a better player, at 30? South Americans and Europeans who get dropped by their academies or don't quite develop quick enough get another chance here in the US to play for longer and develop as some are just late bloomers. Take Jack Harrison for example. Now at Everton, could have very well stopped playing altogether when he got dropped by the Man U academy. Hell MLS all time leading goalscorer Chris Wondolowski didn't get to the 'Quakes until he was 26, where he then went on to score 167 goals and retire a USMNT player, well paid, respected, veteran at the age of 38.

  • Despite the fact that Gauld's career in Sporting didn't pan out in the way that it should've of, he would go on to prove his worth in Farense. He suffered relegation with them in the same season that we ended our 19 year league title drought but Gauld was truly exceptional in Algarve and it's just a damn shame that his time there just happened to be at a club that played better than what their results would suggest (Most teams in Liga Nos were only able to beat Farense by the skin of their teeth). I feel like Jorge Jesus' time at the club was the main contributing factor to him leaving the club as opposed to his lack of first team opportunities since he's always been a manager that prioritizes established players over young talents so that didn't help matters. A lot of young talented players during Jesus' time at the club were frequently loaned out to other clubs in the league (Palhinha, Podence and Francisco Geraldes, etc) so it was no wonder that Gauld would eventually see himself enter "loan hell" until he left. Gauld leaving Britian to escape the toxic tabloid culture should've helped him focus on his game more but unfortunately Portugal is a country that also has a tabloid culture that overinflates the value of youngsters and heavily scrutinizes them if they don't perform to standard (especially if you're a Sporting, Benfica or Porto player). Ryan Gauld is a great "what-if" story because ultimately it was a mixture of poor man-management, unfortunate timing and bad luck that caused him to not reach the potential that he had

Many players, and coaches also dubbed him as the next big thing while in Ryan's age up to until when he was 22 - 23. The dude had the potential to be next Zvonimir Boban, and in the Modric's potential range, and now he is playing in the fifth Croatian league. More than a few pundits voiced their displeasure when he wasn't a finalist for league MVP this year. Not sure how serious this is, but there's been some chatter about Gauld getting Canadian citizenship so he can join the Canadian national team. While the video highlights his abilities with the ball at his feet, his greatest attribute could be his work rate. He's tireless in the press with his strike partner, Brian White, and he willingly tracks back to help the midfield and back line.

Reminds me a bit of Wes Hoolahan for Ireland. It tooks ages for us to cap him even tho lots of Irish football fans knew he was a classy footballer. However due to his strange career path, height and style a lot of international managers wouldnt risk playin him in games, or even call him up to squads.. I dont get that mentality. • Putting that tag of The Scottish Messi wasnt the best way to start his career. He was unbelievable but that pressure can kill a guys career before its had time to begin. He was s decent player but overhyped like That kid From.Ranhers who was dubbed the Scottish Rooney Sheffield utd he ended up playing for Cant remember his name but you see where this is going. Neil McCann the poor mans Ryan Giggs 😂

  • Coming from a Sporting fan really wanted to have seen him blossom there... really liked him, and had really high hopes for him... but he never proved to have much resilience or a true will to play... although I somewhat always thought he should have had more of a chance... he kinda always gave off a vibe of being too soft... glad to see he found his level in Canada... all the best to him

  • Once he said Zidane the greatest of all time, i'm out. There will only ever be one Pele, he did everything on the ball Messi does 40-50yrs previous and not on lush carpeted pitches, lighter balls, better slippered boots and the list is endless. Zidane?. PFFTttttttttt.

  • Interesting thing is that in Football Manager 2005 ( at least no-patched version); Freddy Adu and Bojan Krkic were the best talents in the game. And Messi was awful. He he was still not considered a wonderkid. Even he was older than both Adu and Krkic, 2 and 3 years respectively
