  • A gear pump, especially a small one like this requires very tight tolerance and smooth surfaces to reduce internal leaking if you want high pressure. But for a low pressure application, or just a fun project I think this was very nice and clever.

  • That is pretty cool. My one bit of advice if you want to make higher precision stuff is to know that threatds are not too accurate for locating the centre of holes. It is better to use dowel pins or some sort of expanding mandrill

  • This can be a awesome thing if only some companies mass produce hobby products like these. Fine surface qualities and tight tolerances can be achieved via hard sintered metal internal internals. It could build considerable amount of pressure. Rerspect to video, i was thinking some guy trying to build something fun with scrap but it turned out quite quality piece in the end. Check out the last seconds of the video, you can clearly see electric motor suffers and rpm decreases, this shows that internal leakage of the pump is quite low.

  • I would NEVER use silicone on any oil pump cover. controlling the amount of goop is critical to prevent it from going into the gear chamber. I have had zero success with it also in terms of longevity . May I suggest getting a piece of thick glass, meaning at least double the thickness of window glass (get some other kind due to waviness in window glass), and tape a sheet of a good quality 400 or 600 grit sandpaper to it, such as 3M or Norton, etc. Hold the part with the mating surface against the grit and hand mill the surface for an almost 100% flat surface that won't leak. I have done this to oil pumps when restoring engine for cars that were being restored where I used to work. We did cars that you just cannot find the parts and must become creative with making things work. You would be surprised of new parts that have imprecise fits that show up when using the sandpaper and glass surface. If you have a machinists surface plate, you could tape the sandpaper to it but it all depends on what surface plate is used for and how it is cared for. Just clean the surface completely when done. BTW, if done correctly, the 2 finished surfaces will not leak. Cool project and it gives me ideas. Thanks.

  • Instead of the third drill and tap why not use the bridgeport? (Just curious)

  • I guess it would have been cooler if you machined the gears too it would have been cooler but still pretty cool

  • There is something different abut the shape of pump gears when used on a gear pump. I have noticed that they will not separate from one another if pulled straight out.

  • Does anything prevent the cylinder from pushing back of not powered? How is that achieved on backhoes?

    • This work was only to provide an idea of the carving . I agree that it is not very principled 🙏❤️

    • It's valves that control the cylinders on machines, the pump runs all the time and the valves control the flow of the oil. It won't push back because the valve will have some non return system in it.
