  • the problem about Maxi's assist stats for ppl who don't watch newcastle play all the time, is that they won't know it's due to the likes of Willock and Longstaff missing a ton of absolute sitters. Maxi was also injured a lot last season when we also have Isak and Joelinton to play on the left wing, so he didn't get a lot of minutes, but last season had a pretty decent return per 90.

    • It's an unfair comparison to start with tbh. Any dribbler is likely to have much poorer overall stats than a 1-2 passer. Dribbling from a deep position is taking the game by the scruff of its neck. You have to ride more challenges and your final pass is likely to be under immense pressure. The benefit is often less direct - it pulls opponents out of position and opens up gaps for others to exploit. Hoping Barnes can be great for us anyway of course but I'm not having any negging of ASM.

  • The only thing I’d say about Harvey Barnes as a Leicester fan, is that when he doesn’t score or assist he doesn’t really offer the team much, and only really contributes in a 1/3 of games, he’s a good player for a upper mid table side but he’s not elite imo, we will see what Ed can do tho Cus he’s transformed a lot of average players last season!

    @alexanderthornton8622@alexanderthornton86229 ай бұрын
    • I've heard this a few times, I guess time will tell, especially the way Howe develops players - I feel the way Newcastle attack will suit Barnes perfectly and his numbers might end up being even better while Howe pushes him to massively improve his weaknesses, then of course there's the outcome what you're talking about where he goes missing and doesn't do a lot until he scores/assists which will totally be worth it if he can help us turn a few draws into wins

  • The people who expect Saint-Maximin to be a Mo Salah type player, and criticise him for not being that, are a bit silly. It's perfectly fine for Howe to not want what Saint-Maximin is, but it doesn't take away from him genuinely being a great player.

  • I'm still taking Saint Maximan. He's output might not be the same but he offers you a runner up the field who can hold the ball and occupy defenders well. Barnes does not give you those things at all. At Leicester he consistently loses the ball, he's movement is good and he's an okay finisher but overall he ain't the better player

  • It's weird. From what I've heard about Saint-Maximin, I expected him to dribble everywhere and do tricks, but I didn't know he was so generally creative. Sure he can't shoot at all, but he's overperforming compared to his xAG, plays a lot of progressive passes (springs from deep positions?), he's 95th percentile for long pass completion, 96th for assists, 88th for key passes, 97th for passes into the penalty area, 77th for through balls, 96th for shot-creating actions via live passing and 94th for goal-creating actions via live passing. Whereas Barnes on the other hand cannot pass at all, but is in the 90s for a bunch of shooting related stats, and ranks highly for goals created via fouls won and defensive actions. I really expected Barnes to be more of a neat and tidy wide playmaker type with little direct carrying.
