  • Another tip: a hamster's personality can change later on in life. I had a hamster that lived to 4, and when he was a baby, he was the sweetest, cuddliest little thing. But when he got older, he grew grumpy and irritable. He still enjoyed cuddles, but only during the brief window of time that he was awake (around 2-3 hours close to the time), and if you tried to even look at him when he was trying to sleep, he would scream at you. RIP Freckle, you crazy little bastard 💕

Then the last year of her life she started trying to bite and actually biting me a few times and I was shocked. I was so used to just feeling her lil hands when she was mad and then she suddenly chomped on my finger lol. She also just seemed a little more grumpy and tired, kinda like an old lady.

  • Saying that every hamster is different is an understatement. The first hamster I ever had as a pet was literally the smartest non-human I've ever seen (in fact, smarter than some humans). It learned to open its cage, navigate the house, and climb into my bed. It even "starred" in a couple of episodes of a TV show as the captain of a miniature (remote-controlled) boat. The second hamster I kept was thick as a brick, could barely find its way into its own igloo, and tried to "hibernate" twice. Indoors. During spring. I had to plonk it in front of a heater to revive it and wake it up, upon which it resumed being confused by the layout of its own home.

He's spoilt rotten, massive tank, lots of play and attention and plenty of hidey holes for a good sleep. I love watching your hamster videos with my hamster, I can't stand most hammy vids where they are clearly stressed out. So lovely just to see happy well cared for hamsters!

    @JigglyCox@JigglyCox2 жыл бұрын
  • Had lots of hamsters for several years. Never got bitten once. Even more simple is to start handling them when they started developing fur and their eyes are open. At that point in their lives, you are just a benign lamdscape that feeds them, so they won't fear you. I've only met two screaming hamsters and they were store bought. That seems to be pretty stressful for them. They can learn to trust you if you leave them in their cages for a few days and hand feed them through the bars. When they are no longer scared of you, you can introduce your hand gradually. In any case: respect the hamster. They are lovely and fragile creatures; you are asking them to trust a 20 meters high booming man tree that wants to pet them.

  • These hamsters are just the most adorable floofs! I have rats and while I understand they are way more social than hamsters, all of my boys were adopted. From lab rescues to accidental litters to feeder babies, they had all kind of backgrounds. From my experience, the key to getting their trust was spending time with them and interacting with them every single day, no exceptions. All of them eventually became loving and trusting.

I used to play with em, them then climb on me and I used to let them run around, daily, in their running balls. 1 thing I don’t miss, is the poo that I had to clean from my floor, daily. With that said, still glad I gave them freedom to run.

  • My hamster isn't as calm as the one in this video. He doesn't want to be held with his back on my palm (even with food as a distraction) but he is already tame. He let me hold him, he likes to stay in my bed and climb all over me. I already accepted that maybe it's just his personality. He doesn't like to be held that way and I respect that. • I had four male golden hamsters (one after one, not at the same time) as a kid in the 80's, of course none was pedigree as there wasn't such hamsters in Poland then. And all of them were very tame - handling was the key - I handled them A LOT every day since they were bought and in the evening they were let to run in one room. At first they were shy, but after about two weeks each of them was extremely tame and each of them often climbed all over us humans. My friend also bought a hamster, but hers was never let out to run free and she handled him little "because it stressed him" - so he remained shy all his life. So my experience says, even if you got a shy young hamster, handle him a lot and he/she will become tame very quickly. Cannot tell about the fully adult hamsters though. The first one had, what I could call a dominant (or perhaps assertive) personality, as if you tried to touch him during sleep, in a split second he would turn on you and bite. He simply didn't wish to be awaken. But when he was not sleeping, he was very open and friendly. He was also very intelligent, eg. he was the only one, which not only climbed on us, but also regularly came to my dad while he was watching TV and sitting on an armchair, to lie on his lap, with body flat and extended, but head and ears up. It was absolutely incredible, as I've never had or heard about another hamster doing such a thing. We were laughing that they were watching TV together. To sit on my lap this hamster came like this maybe just few times, on my dad's lap he lay on a regular basis... (My dad loved animals and he had a really special bond with them).

I love how fluffy and so happy and sleepy they are in your hands, they look like they are melting. I remember only a few hamsters I had actually bit me, but they were mostly startled or very new to their enviroment, but mostly I could practically do whatever with them and they were cool with it. • I had a hamster when i was a teen. Having it and having a need to take care of him taught me a lot and made me a more responsible person. But, after two years my hamster died and, actually, remembering that day, even more than 10 years later, that moment when i woke up in the morning and found him dead still hurts me. That was a traumatic experience I wish your hamsters happy and long life.

  • Ive gone through a few hammies..love them little things...they are freindly curious little fuzzies...I always keep their cage clean and dry and pet them and spoiled them everyday..cried hard when I had to put them down from old age...even the smallest things can bring you so much love

  • A friend had a pair of hamsters years ago. Their names were Fred and Flossie! They only moved around in these tunnels from their cages. They had maybe two litters together. She changed their water and fed them but never really interacted with them. I don't think her mother wanted them escaping into their house. They were fun to watch.

  • I just bought a baby hampter 3 months ago from a breeder I had not bought from before. The baby hampter is scared, doesn't like handling, hyperactive... I couldn't figure out why her temperament is so bad, so I checked the pedigree. She's 1st generation "homebred" hamster, her parents were both store hamsters. The breeder failed to tell me that they were from a store. It is a slow process, but she is finally starting to trust me. MUCH more work than with proper pedigree hamsters that have been selectively bred for generations.

  • The sweetest ham that my ex and I had was Lina. She was out of her cage and playing with us on day one! We would never have tried to force that. That same day, Lina was hanging out on one of ex's arms while he scritched her. When he stopped, she looked at him, looked around for a moment, and scritched his arm with her tiny claws. ❤🐹 I can't begin to describe how lovely she was. She loved strangers, bigger animals, and never bit, not even when the vet prodded her. She leaned toward the vet and let out a pleading _beep_ as if to say, "Stop!" She was amazing. They all are amazing.

I had one when I was younger who was docile like the hams in this video. He liked to go in the pocket of my hoodie and fall asleep there. 🥰

  • I learnt the importance of temperament with breeding through rats. On youtube, Someone had bred domestic rats together and then a wild and domestic together at the same time. The fully domestic babies were very tame and relax but the 1st generation wild mix babies were always super scared of him even though they were all born to him. Each new generation of wild mix babies got tamer than the last

  • there’s a bacteria or parasite, i can’t quite remember, that often appears in rats, mice and hansters. It causes them to loose their natural flight instinct and to not be scared of any bigger predator. This is because the bacteria/parasite feels more comfortable in a cats body so the mouse will just walk up to the cat without any fear. Other than that it shows no symptoms so it can appear as tho your hamster has a rly clingy personality and isn’t scared at all. Of course this is not the reason for every rodent loving their owner. I was just thinking about this.

  • I got my hammie from PetSmart (or Petco?) & I think I handled him wrong too early because I didn't know better. But at the same time, I didn't go through a very long period of difficulty with him and we were super close. He was super attached to me and would nap on me, cuddle, give kisses, play with me, etc. So idk if it was his natural temperament or just how I handled him and our special connection.

    • Here’s a tip: If they bite you and then suddenly stop and move on they are not scared! They are happy you are there. Now if they bite and don’t give up they are scared. Nothing that 1 week of taming won’t fix!
