    • Sadly most people have a very anglocentric view of the Viking Age. Viking Age Russia is usually either ignored entirely or just superficially mentioned at best. It's really sad if you think about all the great achievements of the Vikings in the East. We have tons of evidence for a significant Norse presence in the Kievan Rus during the Viking Age. Viking Age Kievan Rus is very rich in archaeological findigs of scandinavian origin. As a matter of fact genetic analysis of human remains from the Viking Age found in the area of Staraya Ladoga/Aldeigjuborg clearly show a strong genetic affinity towards Scandinavia. During the Viking Age Ladoga was just as much part of the Norse World as Hedeby or Jorvik. The Vikings lived in Russia and ruled large parts of european Russia for hundreds of years. It just baffles me how so many people just ignore the Viking Age in the East.

  • The title got my full attention instantly - it would have been interesting to hear about the Iberian Peninsula though. The Reconquista process was a very long period in the Iberian Peninsula's History, that ultimately forged what is modern day Portugal and Spain. Being from Northern Portugal I'm very curious about the early stages of the Reconquista, since my region was part of the former Roman Province of Gallaecia, which did have its own unique chapter in this long story. Tariq's invasion of the Visigothic Kingdom happened in 711, and the Reconquista started at the 722 Battle of Covadonga. But the 740 Berber Revolt against their Arab companions left Gallaecia practically untouched by the Muslims, and much debate still exists about the theses of the _Ermamento_ , that tries to uncover how was this territory managed during the power vaccum that prolongued until precisely around the years depicted here. Theories are that either the territory was utterly emptied of people (I don't buy that), or it remained with scarse populated communities that responded to neither Christian rule from Astúrias or Muslim rule - although maintaining some cohesion through the Church/Clergy, that didn't left the territory. In either case, the _Presúria_ (an ancient term for the reconquering of a town for that period) of the city of Porto, in which Count Vímara Peres took the city for the Christians, happened precisely in 868! This episode marked the birth of the First _Condado_ _Portucalense_ (County of Portucale), being thus the first seed to the birth of Portugal. By the end of the IX Century, all of former Gallaecia was back again in Christian hands, and I only recall of a punitive campaign from Almansor around the turning of the millenium, that was able to push the frontier back to the Douro river in some places, and sacked Santiago de Compostela. PS: Viking raids, the fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire, and the Muslim invasion were the cause for the creation of the medieval castle.

    • At least in CK2 christian Iberia gets steamrolled 100% of the time by the muslims. I hope they fix that, in my opinion the game should run as historically faithful as possible UNLESS the player steps in. In the current state the christian iberians get destroyed every time, unless the player is playing as them and is skillful.

  • Hello, I love history and I’m new to this channel. Your videos are great and I’m glad you cover this game since it’s one of my favorites. Also thanks for mentioning my country Algeria in the video, indeed the rostamids were descendants of the Persian sassanian General Rostam who fought in Al Qadisiya, the rostamids were not really in good relationships with Baghdad and their aghlabid vassals, however they maintained good relationships with the Umayyads in spain. Yet the Fatimids imams who came in early 10th century completely changed the Maghreb. New berber dynasties rose to power. And religious conflict erupted between pro Fatimid shias and prob Umayyads sunnis. Over time when islamic spain went into trouble, it became hugely dependent of the situation in maghreb. It would be good if you cover the history of he region from time to time ! Best Regards

Between those, the counties of Barcelona and Aragon gained the upper hand due to conquest and dinastic unions. Then later on, the county of Aragon became a kingdom thanks to their family relationship with the royalty of Pamplona... until they married their princess with the count of Barcelona and formed the Crown of Aragon, wich later on became a major power at the Mediterranean.

Even if both were already "unified" by then, it was just a dinastic union. They were still split entities with their own rights and dominions. So the kingdom who did the conquest and colonization was Castille. It wasn't until 1715, after the Succession War, that the spanish kingdoms were oficially unified.

While it's certain that they did a lot of joint operations together, those were mostly on the european side, to defend the Crown's interests on the Mediterranean and the surroundings. Not even the kingdom of Aragon was an unified entity by then, since it was composed of the kingdoms of Aragon, Valencia, Mallorca, Sicily, Naples and the principality of Catalonia(old county of Barcelona), and those were most of the time acting independently. They'd even had sepparate kings at some points of their history. And respecting America, they had no rights of conquest, colonization or commerce until 1715, when the Borbon king erased all the divisions.
