An Unnecessary Upgrade | 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70 mit Kugelblende auf VK9.03

The Sturmgeschütz III, or StuG III for short, was a German assault gun and the most produced full-tracked armored fighting vehicle of that nation during the Second World War. Despite being designed for infantry support, it received a long 75 mm gun in 1942, which significantly increased its firepower against tanks. As the tides turned and the Wehrmacht began fighting a defensive war on all fronts, StuGs fell into their element as potent tank destroyers, but despite their success, further enhancements in firepower were considered.
One such consideration was to rearm the StuG III with an even longer 7.5 cm (2.95 in) gun, derived from the Panther tank project. By incorporating the longer gun, the StuG III would have been capable of engaging enemy tanks from greater distances and with more penetrating power. Another project developed in parallel involved reusing the diminutive chassis of the VK9.03 light tank, which was to be armed with the same large 7.5 cm L/70 gun. However, neither of these projects progressed beyond the proposal stage, likely due to various factors such as resource limitations, shifting priorities, and the evolving nature of the war.

  • At this point of WW2, the Germans were desperate to find any vehicles that can mount big guns. It wont be surprising if the war dragged to 1946 and see a horse drawn Volkswagen Beetle with a 7.5 cm L/70 cannon!

    • One nickname that the Volkswagen had in Australia was Hitlers revenge, apparently the heater was two pipes with one been heated by the exhaust , when it rusted the fumes would enter the people compartment, if what you said was true , it would be even more so!

  • Oh no, WarGaming is going to put this vehicle into the game as a tier 6 premium.

    • WG doesn’t do premiums other than tier 8 since that’s the big money makers and it’s all they care about, probably would be a free gift tank or secondary lootbox reward

  • Perfectly fine Tank / Plane project with only a mildly complicated production: exist Hitler: And i took that personal (Orders compleatly oversized weaopon not suited for the project to be used, thus increasing cost and production time by 600%.)

  • Upgrade was not unnecessary. In fact it was becoming essential in second half of 1944. Pzgr.40 was unavailable due to lack of wolfram. Germans tried to make them with steel core PzGr. 40 (St), or even iron core PzGr.40 (W), without much success. Usual Pzgr.39 was unable to penetrate frontal armor of IS-2, but not only that, it was able to penetrate front armor of T-34/85 only from around 200-300m, and even that unreliably. At those distances Stug III was very vulnerable to being flanked. Even in the West, Shermans were being up-armored (E8) , there were Churcills, Cromwell had received plate in the front etc ... Thus, L/70 became necessary.

  • The 7.5 cm L/70 cannon was too heavy for the Panzer IV chassis so shoehorning it into a STUG III chassis wouldn't have been a great idea.
