Enzo Built a One-Off Ferrari with an F1 Engine: Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale - BTS with DTS - Ep. 13
For a few magical years, the eras of Ferrari and coachbuilding overlapped, resulting in some of the most spectacular automotive confections of all time. Before Pinin Farina became the default designer of Ferrari road cars, there was Vignale, who designed and built the bodies of about 150 Ferraris between 1950 and 1954. These were made individually by hand and so a Vignale design was almost never built in quantities greater than ten. Only two examples of this particular body design were built, and this car, serial number 0313EU, is the only 250 Europa to receive this design.
The mechanical bits of this 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa are equally special: the 22 Europas built are the only Ferrari 250s powered by the iconic “long block” Aurelio Lampredi-designed V12 which Ferrari designed in order to have a large and powerful enough naturally-aspirated engine to run competitively in Formula 1. And it sounds nothing like other Ferrari V12s.
In this video, Derek Tam-Scott explores the sensational combination of race-derived mechanicals and Vignale’s automotive jewelry that make up this car, offering a glimpse into an era where Ferrari was an obscure sports car company turning out fewer than 50 cars a year in order to fund a racing habit.

15 minutes ago, I wasn't even aware this car existed, and now I'm confident this is the coolest Ferrari ever made. Simply gorgeous in every single way!
Stunningly beautiful
The sound… my god the sound.
@@lookoutforchris Imagine how it feels under your arse.
@@lookoutforchris incredible!
Rosselini 21 ROMA was the coolest Ferrari!
Nailed the pronunciation of every Italian name; accurate representation of Enzo’s career and motivations; proper credit to the engineers and designers; and as always, well thought out delivery without a bunch of gushing nonsense. All other youtubers, take note, this is proper automotive journalism. Well done, DTS, as always. Super high quality piece.
But commentary audio isn’t EQ correctly.
I think he speaks Italian
@@eskamobob8662 Haha no, it’s the equalization of the commentary audio, the program audio is done correctly but the commentary has Hot spots and I’m sure other people with nice audio systems can hear the difference also. I’m a sound engineer, this is what I do for a living. But if you don’t have a nice audio system you wouldn’t know the difference anyways But their are plenty who do and can hear it.
@@dpf2012 I was talking about pronouncing the Italian names correctly
@@eskamobob8662 agreed he did a great job on that and everything else. Video quality was fantastic, information was extremely informative and researched, dialog was wonderful. I enjoyed it all, just wanted to mention the audio quality so maybe they can address next time. It was like he was to close to the Mic when recording the commentary audio. Normally a sound engineer would ask to get back away from the mic a little bit more so those hot spots do come out at certain points. Which makes distortion in the audio capture. But overall another great video.
Ferrari's from the 50's to the 70's to me are the crown jewels and have seen over a hundred Ferrari's over the last 40 years. The front nose design is unusual. Thank you for showing this hidden marvel.
That Lampredi V12 is positively one of the best sounding engines I've ever heard. Even through a video and not in person, it was still worth a giggle of joy.
Legitimately tear jerking, it’s just so pure! It doesn’t scream “LOOK AT ME” like modern supercars it just screams *Class* *Elegance* truly a spectacular car and a spectacular engine.
I’ll admit it looks good
And someone friggin LS swapped it
@@PulledPurk what does that mean
@@hosoiarchives4858 someone took that beautiful engine out and they put in a Corvette engine
For some time now I have drifted away from my lifetime passion for cars, primarily blaming all the new car spotters and influencers who like cars for all the wrong reasons. I’m glad KZhead channels like these exist that make me remember why I have had the passion for so long and ignite the flame once again.
Like that clown that asked Horacio Pagani who he was and what his job was as he pulled up in a Pagani at a Pagani event?
So true all those new car spotter/influencer dont understand the history of the cars nor company just want utube hits I bought a million dollars car and smashed it BS. Sad thing is people watch them
@@FrowningIke I seen a vid like that some guy doing a video of Bonneville salt flats racing and not knowing who Gene Winfield was even though he a legend of the sport .
Adrian, I could not agree more! All these “influencers” with all the titles of the videos starting with cold start, or straight piped and such. Totally turns me off. But this is a wonderful channel, and this car is simply sublime.
Your description of shifting through the gearbox and "feathering the carbs" was utterly perfect, thank you for the smiles!
Agreed, I normally don’t really like these drive along videos. Just to see some old guy yelling “this is glorious “ never works for me. The way he described it, I really could picture/feel it
I had no idea this vehicle even existed. Beautiful coverage, from its historical context, to the inputs and dynamic characteristics, and the SOUND. You have outdone yourself, Mr. Tam-Scott
“This car doesn’t have character, it defines what character is…” brilliant story and ride along.
Incredibly well put
It still has character though, otherwise it wouldn't make sense.
i would beat the shit out of this car 😁
This is not a video produced for likes nor priority treatment by the algorithm, this a an example of passion and skillful execution resulting in sustained engaged viewership. I thought I’d watch for a minute, but then realized the film was almost over. All attributes: cinematography, writing, music, editing, and sound recording of that incredible exhaust tone are top notch- bravissimo
Does anyone else watch this over and over? I have watched this at least 10 times.
"An expression of a culture and values that are so different from today's... suddenly you find yourself living in a world of good taste that no longer actually exists. This car doesn't have character, it defines what character is." Wonderful writing, such elegance of expression for such a (brutally) elegant piece of automotive art.
the carefully chosen words of the narrator stood out immediately. then i asked an AI add-on: write something about GT cars. answer: These cars were often low-slung, dramatic, and richly embellished with chrome trim and engravings. AI clearly ‘ borrowed’ from the issimi website 😂
that brought emotion to me when i heard it and saw it.
I'm a Maserati guy (1967 Quattroporte) but I tip the hat to everyone involved in designing, building, restoring the car and making this fine video. Highly informative and beautifully produced.
That sound is biblical. I feel the need to write an opera about the shear wonder of that noise.
LOL the Sky Fairy.
Every part of this video felt like a love letter to this car. How could you not love this car? Bravo!
Easily my favorite car content on yt. So so so much to learn about these cars that don't get talked about anymore. Opening up a whole new group of enthusiasts to what makes these cars special
What a sound. Real motor sound. No modern sports car can come even remotely close. God, how i will miss things like this in the new electric age.
That must be the reason that every time I hoover the carpet I imagine that I'm doing 200mph in a Tesla...
Your vocabulary describing the gear shifts is dead on. I’m one of the few that know what it’s like to jam those early Ferrari gearboxes. Your diction is spot on my man
Top notch automotive writing. "This is a car for touring that is properly grand" "this car doesn't have character, it defines what character is"...both of these lines are probably in my top 10 automotive journalists lines, ever. Well done, please continue doing these videos, they are works of art themselves.
These videos feel longer than they are and yet also feel like they contain no excess fat. Thank you for showcasing a truly unique car I had never seen before... and also letting us hear it!
Driving this car once a month, Will put a smile on you forever. A true pure driving, Not in Traffic of course.............
The exhaust note is haunting and those pops from the exhaust on the overrun...
A few. Very few cars are able to make me catch my breath the first time seeing them. This rolling art piece has done just that. Bellissimo! I watched this again 6 months later. This Jewel on wheels moved me again! Put me in a daze just like the first time I saw the love of my life! 😅
The coach so elegant. The engine so vengeful. The driver trying to control the dynamic and loving every minute of it.
I love the sound of the Vintage Ferraris they sound so godly.
I had to stop. My dreams will be haunted by the exquisite description and the remembered by the once in a lifetime sound of this masterpiece.
Props to the owner for un-LS-swapping the car
🤣🤣🤣
Sacrilege!
Makes me wonder at the level of inbreeding involved with the people who put the LS in it and painted it purple.
@@wright1048 makes me wonder at the level on inbreeding involved with people who think LS engines existed in the 1960s.
One of the best places for an LS engine is in a Tesla
"the perfect car doesn't exist"....this is perfection
"...and no labour union in sight" proves that Derek has a subtle sense of humor of a 93 year old English gentleman.
... but is simply not true. Italy had labour unions since 1912 and especially after WW II many millions were members of these.
I thought that comment was interesting as well. An excellent video but industrialized northern Italy was heavily labor union oriented. Not saying that's a good thing but Ferrari did have a good relationship with his workers.
And not a puffed up suit wearing imbecile of the managerial class in sight. Y’know, like the ones that decided to build the Morris Marina on outdated production lines. Or was that the unions’ fault too?
@@nkelly.9 Well, the outdated production lines were the right match for the car itself - which had its technical base from a 1948 model. 🤨 BTW: No unions involved in this decision processes AFAIK.
But also proves that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
That sound I’ve driven or passengered in many Colombo V12’s from 3.0 to 4.4 litres with 2 or 4 cams and none sound like that. Great film about a car from a part of Ferrari’s history that doesn’t get enough attention.
First car video that nearly made me cry. Congratulations you win my Oscar for best car video ever.
A brand new car to me engineering meets art
I believe this ranks as the most beautifully eloquent presentation on any subject that I have seen on KZhead. Humble thank you's for a delightful film about this Ferrari.
the sound of that car when it passes at the start, it`s just an incredible sound, as for the looks, FAAAaaaaaantastic
Honestly tho this is definitely the most underrated channel on KZhead.
Wonderful documentary on this fabulous unique Ferrari from a bygone era.. when exotic cars were truly beautiful. The Italian craftsmanship of that period in time was remarkable. Loved the old b&w pictures. And that engine growl..sensational.
2:35 I love the transition from rough to smooth. Generally your car sounds here are some of the best I've heard and you've let a pursuit of "slick" production values diminish your work. 0 out of 100 clicked play to hear faceless arpeggiated chords on the piano. 100 out of 100 want to hear more of this car.
I was scrolling down all the models ever produced on the Ferrari official website and i stumbled on this car. This documentary compliments the car. Chapau
Wow, simply magic and a must watch.
Unbelievably gorgeous and worth untold millions, I'm sure.
Please give DTS's voice (recording and mix) the great sound quality that he and this content richly deserves.
What a machine... I... wow! The lines, the sounds... I can't even... Wow!
I never knew the Lampredi engine existed, let alone that it sounds like that. Just incredible.
Wildly underrated channel. Needs more followers!
Man... the writer of these videos... is GREAT
Excellent! The monotone voice over is gone and there is excitement and inflection in his voice........so good I watched it twice - thank you sir!
Simply put ... The epitome of beauty and elegance. As the narrator said, this is an automotive artefact.
Had to re-watch some parts of this video because I started daydreaming about the car, what an incredible machine.
Your description of the gear change is fantastic. BTS and Revelations are two of the best car shows on the internet. With two of the best most well informed, well spoken car guys ever.
I've never heard of this model, but seeing the front was all it took for me to fall in love with it, what a beautiful automobile!
Never miss a BTS with DT-S. This is one special car. Derek is just the right guy to geek out over an obscure Ferrari effectively nobody even knows ever existed. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a slight bit jealous he got to drive it.
We are almost driving it ourselves through your narration. Brilliant Derek, thanks!
Omigosh, what an honor to have been able to drive this car…..lucky guy.
The aural experience through video is incredible; it has to be magical in person!
I think this is ultimately the best Ferrari film I’ve ever seen on KZhead.
I love the painstaking level of detail that goes into these videos. Nothing else like them. Looking forward to the next BTS.
What a classic masterpiece! So glad it was restored to its original glory.
My god! That sounds that come from that car... It's glorious. Great video, once again.
The sound that makes is astonishing!
The narrative was poetry and proof that time travel is possible. I learned something today. Thank you.
How fortunate that it was restored to its original spec for the world to enjoy once more. It could have been lost forever. This has to be one of the most valuable road going Ferraris.
Beautiful is just an understatement to describe this piece of art...🧐
I’m waiting for the grandson of the man from Massachusetts to say “That was my grandpa.” Also-your prose and eloquence is befitting of 0313EU-timeless. Thank you.
It's amazing how some of these vehicles end up (random engine swaps and paint jobs). It must feel amazing!
Those carb Ferrari's sound so damn good.
Tail of the Dragon is where this car would rule!!! Or any one of the mountain roads in North Carolina!!! That exhaust tone echoing through the environment is sounds of love!!!!!
All hail DTS. Never stop
All of these videos are absolutely perfect. The sound and film quality, the cars, the commentary; there is no better car enthusiast on KZhead. Awesome work
What a car! What a video! Thank you for this. Add me as another that had no idea this car existed a few moments ago but also now hold it in high regard just because of what you mentioned. The way you described the shifts is just pure poetry. Those of us that like driving for the sake of driving appreciate this and gosh I'd love to drive a car like this, or just any older car similar to this. It's not about going around the fastest to shave off a tenth here and carry enough speed through the corner leading onto the straight, it's about the senses.
Ear and Eye Candy! I love the sound of those boat starters on these vintage Ferraris!
Can't applaud you enough for these videos. Without exposure to these cars, we (future generations of car collectors / enthusiasts) wouldn't value them. This is a perfect example of a car that should be treasured and valued for the future.
You are a true gift to car culture. Thank you.
Swapping an engine like that for anything else should be considered a crime I loved every moment of this video. Bravo
What a glorious sounding V12 👌🏻
What a sound . Beautiful.
Can't believe you came up with this. Thank you!
First I see such a non sporty but elegant looking car and then I hear this incredible brutal sound. Amazing. Till now I always thought that I am well informed about cars and their techniques. It seems that I have to be more modest. Thank you very much for this excellent and very detailed explanation. First class.
10/10 for the poetry of the describing of it! The writing for your voiceover has a quality that matches the car. Bravo!
How, once hearing those notes of rumble so perfect, could ever stop driving.
I couldn't help but smile throughout. Well done video.
Thank you for putting this video together. These are the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. Works of art. Vignale. Now I know :)
Beauty on the wheels! The exhaust notes, the carbs - fantastic. I would love to drive this machine. And yes, very good job with pronouncing the Italian names and words correct. Very well done 👍🏻
shiveringly astonishing writing and soundtrack thank you for this transcendent experience to end my good weekend with, looking forward to watch it again tomorrow with sound system blasting lampredi song.
Watching you drive the 250 Europa in your well produced video made me feel transported back to the '50's. I just imagine what driving the actual car would make me feel like. You did a great job DTS, keep it up :)
Wow. You find the most amazing cars and your historical research is so unique.
Beautiful, thank you Derek
That sound is magical
Well done video! Usually I pass after a few seconds, but this was done right. The fade ins towards the end really work. I used to build racing engines, and racing cars. This just feels good.
That exhaust note!!! Pure heaven! Beautifully presented video!!
Your voice is so calming and soothing🌄👌🏻Great videos
Wow, what a glorious machine!
Wonderful video as always. These are my favourite of everything automotive on YT. What an incredible noise.
Perfect. And superbe narration! Thank you so much for posting
The description of the gearshift alone was a thesis by DTS. XD
Beyond beautiful. Both the car and the episode overall. Thank you for this.
Absolutly brilliant video. Perfect combination between history and the car
Lovely video. Glad you got to drive it. Glad we got to see and enjoy your experience too. Ciao!
How does one become sufficiently blessed by the gods to be able to experience this? Just watching is truly magical. I can only wonder in awe🙌
Amazing sound. Thank you for creating this video. Informative, cinematic and beatifully recorded. Thank you!
It felt like your voice wavered a bit through your narration, which gives the impression that the experience of driving this machine left a very profound long lasting impression on you. I've heard people talk about the legendary Lampredi motor but haven't heard one in person or video at least till now, and it sounds almost beautifully brutal. Cars like these are the type of motoring experience that you can still feel the long lasting impressions years later, especially cars with truly special sounding motors that reach into your chest and stop your heart when you first hear and feel the rumble of the cylinders firing. The colombo v12 has always been that for me after being in my grandfather's 330, and now I need to hear a Lampredi in person, haha. Great video.
This is the greatest Ferrari I have seen so far.
IMO this is by far one of the best YT car Chanels. The research, history and visual style nail it and make it required viewing for petrol heads. I’m off work for he afternoon and binge watching your excellent Chanel. Liked, subbed and notified👍
