Mistakes Every SOLO Traveler Should Avoid
Every person should travel alone at least once in their lives! In this video, I share some of the lessons I've learned from traveling to every country.
There are a ton of little pieces of advice I can give you about solo travel. For example, carry a paper copy of your passport in case you lose it. Bring Tylenol, anti-diarrhea medication etc, with if you get sick because you have to take care of yourself. Don’t walk around with both headphones on at night (or in general) depending on where you are. You always want to stay aware of your surroundings. One of my biggest pet peeves about solo traveling is having to bring your bags with you whenever you go to the bathroom so nothing gets stolen but it’s all worth it in the end because solo travel is one of the best things you ever do for yourself and your personal growth. I wish you all safe travels!!

. 1. Don't wander alone at night 2. Use official taxi and use map 3. Don't get intoxicated during travel 4. Prior research of place you are visiting 5. Don't isolate yourself at new places. 6. Do Gut walk and talk to locals. 7. Don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself, dress like locals and don't carry extra baggage. 8. Don't be afraid of having advice or recommendations from experienced travellers. 9. Learn to cope with unwanted situations.
Very good observations
And suggestions
Thanks
Also, lock your room and search for hidden cameras.
@@emmathompson4535 very good suggestions
Difference between a tourist and a explorer is that one watches the new culture, the other one becomes one with the culture. The latter is the most satisfying and also mirrors your point of not calling attention. Great vid Lexie!
Totally agree with you! We should always be explorers an not just tourists
The "Gut Walk" is incredibly important. The very first time I traveled abroad (and was alone!!!), I felt terrified to leave my room. I'm naturally extroverted, so I was surprised I felt that way. It took me a good 2-3 hours before I had the confidence to go outside and start walking around. That day, I met all of my best and close friends! Forever thankful I had the courage to go out! Since then, I travel by myself all the time. There's nothing quite as nice as knowing you can depend on yourself and see the world on your own 🤗
Thats Awesome! Imagine if you went straight out the door. You might of never met your best and close friends. Everything happens for a reason (I think).. I so appreciate you building up the confidence to go! The "Gut Walk" are so much fun!
@@ryanstead3148 Aw, thank you! 😄 I'm really glad I had the courage, too. Hope you're able to experience it as well!! 😁👍
@@kaylee9280 Thank you! 😃
I finally found someone like me.... INTROVERTED EXTROVERT
Then we're three
Forreal!
am an introverted extrovert but a little bit antisocial maybe because I am not in the public area.
You may have been confusing introvert with shy.
@@antonboludo8886 were you referring to me?
I had a similar experience with a "taxi" driver in Amsterdam...and while it could have been safe, my intuition was screaming!!!! I made an excuse and left. I always have the route on my map as well!
Sometimes, it’s safe but they’re just taking advantage of you, making circles around the city to make sure you pay more 😅
That's the worst! Glad you were able to navigate through that situation safely🙏🏼
So, In the netherlands taxi driver's cars ALWAYS have a blue licence plate. In case you ever go back :D Sometimes you can order one online and pre-pay a set price for the travel that you make, so you also dont end up being scammed. Im dutch so if u have questions u can always ask
@@meganversteeg61 oh, thank you!! I couldn’t see the license plate color. I will definitely keep that in mind! I loved my time there and can’t wait to go back!
I HIGHLY recommend that everyone in high school after they graduate take a gap year. I did it, I left everyone I know here in the US in Philly at 18 to live in Spain where I don't know the language or anyone there. I went there to learn the language and I have no regrets. While living there I did many solo backpacking trips around Europe and the experience I had no university can teach you. The awesome friends I met the confidence I got the appreciation for life was all worth it. After traveling solo I now rather travel solo than with a group, or with friends. I think of it like this once you graduate from high school you really will never have the time in your life to tak a WHOLE year off and do whatever you want. Whether that's traveling. Think about it. If you go to college you're going to be busy studying and will only have the summer to enjoy your time off. Now once you graduate college you're an adult you have a degree and you now need an actual job. Now you're an adult and working and won't have time util your retire to take a full year off and travel or do whatever you want. Why wait till your mid-60s to do that? Why not do it when you're young at 18 19. Now yes, your parents will not like the idea, but you're 18 you can do whatever you want. Even if you take a year off you're not going to be on the streets and lose out on your degree. You still be able to get the degree you want even if you take a year off is not going to affect that at all. If anything it's going to help. I'm going to school for nursing. Yes, I'm behind 1 and a half now, but I can speak Spanish. Now being in the medical field in the US and being able to speak Spanish is so helpful. I think a hospital would take me a student that took longer to get his degree but can speak Spanish than someone that got their degree quicker. At the end of the day, it's your life you take control. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS.
I had a scholarship so I was unable to take a gap year after highschool but I did take one in between my under grad and grad degree to move abroad and never moved back to the states! I moved to Guatemala, been for you about two years and in January will move to a new country. I have absolutely zero ganas a regresar los estados la verdad!
Fuck college. Why just one gap year? Why not just travel forever.

You should not fill your mind with too much stuff. Millions of have traveled in the past, before social media reduced travel to living for the cameras.
Congratulations!! Good luck!

Downloading the offline maps is a great tip! I started doing as well even if I’m not solo traveling just to make sure I’ll always know where I’m at or to make sure the taxi driver is actually taking me to my accommodation 😅
one of my biggest tips is staying at hostels! you meet a ton of people who are also traveling solo and you learn about others cultures. Made so many amazing memories this way!
I completely understand what you mean about the extroverted introvert, that is exactly how I have always felt and would constantly find myself super conflicted when presented with social situations but with getting to know myself it has become easier to navigate. Thanks for this video.😊
I can definitely understand where you're coming from! Thank you for sharing❤️
As always these are some really great tips! Thanks Lexie!
Love these tips! Please keep doing more solo travel tips!

I have done 5 major solo trips so far. And countless smaller trips by myself as well . 😁 I love solo traveling as a woman . ❤️ Your advice is so true . But I am also thinking about practicing self-defense tricks and learning boxing before my next solo trip 🥊 in case any direct physical attack happens lol 😂
Thank you, Lexie!!! Legend!

I am the same way when it comes to planning trips! I almost always have some set itinerary for what I plan to do in a destination even if it is a place I have been to several times such as Boston. It gives me more control of what I would like to do and an easier way to budget the trip. I did hear from another traveler to also include some room for spontaneity too as things may not always go to plan or something really fun can pop out of nowhere that would be really intriguing. In addition, I also like the tip about telling family or close friends where you are going just in case something happens. I always let my parents know where I plan to go just to be safe!
I cant wait to read your book! 😊
Wow, leaving for my first real solo trip this weekend, so perfect timing! Thanks!
That’s exciting, Lucca! Where are you going?
@@VASIGTravelingLifeinLondon I'm from Amsterdam, and am enjoying a gap year currently. This year I've lived in Milan, Stockholm and Madrid, but in each place I either stayed with a host family or a friend, so it didn't feel like a solo trip. But tomorrow I'm flying to Gran Canaria, where I don't know anyone, so it will be my first REAL solo travel experience!

I get overwhelmed easily. Love to travel but make a point to spend time in nature. I couchsurf or AIRBNB it because I need downtime or I will get stomach pains.
Constantly searching for views that take our breath away. And just we found it!!!!!
Great advice !!!
I love doing stuff alone, I started my travel with many alone trips. It’s still small but little growth every day is good.

Hi Lexie, Your videos are just awesome and very helpful. Can you just make a video on the items that you carry while traveling like your bag, other essentials and how to pack lightly while backpacking.
Oh you made video on my Birthday, so nice of you :)

I truly appreciate all of this advice!! I’m 19, I’ve started taking trips with friends places. I just went across country out West in the US with my sister and now I’m dying to go somewhere international!! I feel so empowered knowing that there are other women who travel and that it can be done safely. Thank you ❤️
Start with thailand/australia/canada/ peru/ costa rica or any countries in those line where safety is very high (choose according to preference and budget)…. Or you can start solo in africa like I did, but wouldnt reccommend, it needs more « travel awarness » and patience that other countries will develop first 😅
Enjoying Lexie Love❤ you dear huge hug
Your such an inspiration,,, I really wanna travel to big places like Costa Rica alone but worry. Xx
I'm currently in Colorado by myself! My first solo trip! Well, I have my dog with me
Drinking on any trip is always a bummer... Maybe a beer/cocktail with dinner or a wine tasting but anything more than that will more than surely ruin your trip... Hangovers, de-hydration, roofies, diarrhea, possible blackouts and more than anything LOST TIME... You can have a drink in a bar anywhere, getting out and experiencing your surroundings is what you are there for!! Great video Lexi!! See you in Myrtle Beach!
thank you so much for this !!!! It'd help me a lots!!!!
08:41 Damn it, Tunisia became a crazy country 😅 As Tunisian, I want to apologize to you for your awful experience when you just landed at the airoport. Sad how these sick people does not respect others. I am enjoying your videos Lexie. Keep it up !
I honestly think in major citys at the airports there will always be scetchy people. For all that I (very limitedly) know, that story could also happen in Berlin or L.A. or whereever. Thats why I think its very good advice to be cautious with your first ride from the airport to accomodations. :)
I traveled alone once to another country/continent before the pandemic started and it was a great experience. I can't wait for things to go back to normal so I can do more traveling! I'll definitely need to try the gut walk. And I always tell friends how I love meeting people (other travelers from other countries and locals) during my travels. My friends don't seem to understand :/
Where did you go?
Love you Lexi , from Bangladesh ♥️
Can you please do a video on how to take care of your health while traveling. Traveling can take a toll on your body and skin.. How do you sustain a healthy routine?
From last 3 years after completing my 12th, I was following what my heart say, I was searching for the real purpose of my life and what I am truly passionate about and wants to do for rest of my life. Now, finally I decided to take an year break, start from zero and explore the world as solo backpacker. And, along with that, working on travel photography & filmmaking self-assignment. Thanks for this video. This will be helpful for me.
My inspiration for my first solo trip was a friend of mine going to Japan on his own. Since I was planning to go to WDW in Florida that was my impetus to go alone. I've since made another solo trip to London and when Covid finally gets lost I'm going to London again
Sorry to hear what happened to you in Tunisia, besides that hope you enjoyed your trip here!

Very impt video!!!! Ty Lexie! I don't have the guts to do this, lol. I think.... Starting small is key.... Start with the rest of Canada, US, London, keep moving bigger 🤣
Please upload more videos every time, every week, please make more videos MI Senòrita❤️😊
Some pretty good advice actually. For sure coming from experience. I visited 30 countries so far, India, South Africa, Morocco as a solo traveller. I guess as a female you have to be even more cautious.
I wish I had been free when I was at 20 years old .you know, in my country It’s arduous to get permission from your family and travel alone whether you are mature or immature .in other word it’s taboo.
Thanks 😊 Alexis 😎
Arriving late in Seville,we found all hotels closed and no one would open up for us. We found a spot in the park to get some sleep before morning. Getting in late to NOLA we decided to spend the night on the gambling boats,we actually made a few bucks too. Then after breakfast we found a spot to stay.
Thank you so much for creating these amazing and useful videos! How do you plan long trips of multiple weeks or months?
Can you make a video on how you cope/deal with anxiety and stress while traveling? You said you do meditation, can you share more in detail please. Loving your videos btw :)

I can't wait for your book!! When will it be coming out?
I think she said the summer...I can’t wait either!!
I did 2plus years once and it was Incredible. Team Nly.
I do gut walks most of the time when im travelling!!
Can you share tips for taking care of yourself like avoiding disease or what to do when you get sick when solo travel?
I think bringing pills with you for the most common things like headache, stomachache, flu or something else that you experience often is always a good idea
It may sound obvious for some but not for others - Some tricks Make sure you get all vaccines/shots if the area you're going to has specific hazards. Some popular ''travel vaccines'' include those to protect against: - Hepatitis A - Hepatitis B - Typhoid and paratyphoid fever - Meningococcal disease - Yellow Fever - Rabies Japanese Encephalitis Make a traveler's medkit that includes: - Analgesics (go with 3 types - Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, Acetylsalicylic Acid - also known as Advil, Tylenol and Aspirin) - Antihistamine, both cream and pills for mild allergic reactions - Immodium, for diarrhea _(also covers Traveler's diarrhea )_ - Hydrocortisone _(anti itch cream, good for insect bites, skin reactions, etc)_ - Insect repellent with DEET if in a mosquito/fly heavy zone - Sunscreen - Antacid _(to relieve heartburn/upset stomach)_ Then there are more specific addons such as - Antifungal lotion - Antibacterial ointment - Antibiotic for severe traveler's diarrhea - Antimalarial drugs, if prescribed by your doctor Read up on health and safety for your destinations. Some destinations recommend - Only drinking from sealed water bottles - Never eat pre-cut fruits and fresh produce _(buy the fruit or vegetable whole and clean it thoroughly)_ Always wash your hands before eating or touching your face, eyes, etc *_Always make sure you get enough sleep especially the first nights when changing timezones_* - it can be very taxing on your body, deplete your energy levels and also weaken your immune system. Drink often - but that's a life trick, not limited to travel! Don't wait to be thirsty to drink, always drink a little throughout the day
Thank you 🙏
Make sure you're bringing enough medication with you for headaches, upset stomach, potential flu. Get vaccinations for areas with viruses that are high risk like malaria, yellow fever etc. Carry a 1st aid kit with you. This is essential!
@@WanderlustWithT thank you 🙌

Oh my gosh I'm an introverted extrovert as well!!
you are a brave woman
Lexie is generally charismatic and likeable. I know, she wasn't like this at her high school years. I guess, travelling a lot makes you this.
I have traveled all over the world as well, a couple of times solo. But I can only imagine how much more on guard you have to be if you're a female solo traveler. I have found that many women who fear solo travel but want to see the world join Contiki Tours, where they are joined together as a group and make lifelong friendships through traveling together. But you do lose the freedom of moving where you want at any time, and are on an itinerary. I did it solo and still had a fantastic time. Pros and Cons.
