Timing Belts are essential to keep a car running when it malfunctions there are dire consequences with consequential damage to the engine, namely bent valves, so it is important to know the state of the Timing Belt and to replace when necessary.

  • This is amazing. a drunk driver crashed into my car head on, and i am repairing it on my own. I just learned that the engine mounting attaches to the cam belt cover and not the head... I was soo stressed out because that cast iron part of the cam cover is broken, and I thought it was the cylinder head. This video helped me loads even though I am not doing a cambelt change.

    • Hi Rikus, thanks for supporting my channel by tuning in, I have done these belts on numerous occasions, but never filmed it, I will do so when the next one comes in, I can tell you there are no adjustments for these belts as they are special stretch belts and not easy to fit, there are a few special tools for it on the market, but very few actually work, so I use patience and ingenuity to fit these belts.

  • Excellent video, Gary. I've done the exact same job using your instructions on my mother's car but perhaps I didn't get the timing spot on. We have an erratic idle. Car idles smoothly for a bit and then starts shaking for a bit. It's also hard to start sometimes. I've replaced the MAP sensor, cam angle speed sensor, coil (tried both the flat and taller one) and plugs. Also checked the PCV valve (rattles nicely) and hose and cleaned the throttle body. The generic diagnostic software I have says there is a random misfire (P0300) and I can see the timing advance jump around when the idle is wonky. Car pulls very well above 1000rpm. Would I be able to bring it to you next week to diagnose and redo the timing if necessary, please?

  • With the rocam engines very very important to not do any late oil changes, it gets very expensive having to change out the 2 cams, and all those roller followers, because one decided to seize and grind the cam shaft from oval to round. Oil and filter is a cheap insurance policy.

Is the procedure the same for the 1.6 version of this Duratec engine? (Looks identical). Also, out of interest, what was the mileage of this car to have the belt in that condition? Thanks!

  • SAMCOR designed that engine to be easy to assemble at the plant, and to make it easy to install on that Rosslyn line, saving time there. they figured out that most would not need the belt changed till out of warranty, so the load of work to get to the parts. For those in warranty they used the time it takes to get the belt changed based on the time it takes to put it in in the first place. At least you do not have to take the front of the vehicle off, or remove inlet and exhaust manifolds..... As usual some of those studs decided to not agree with you on coming undone, so you need to put the stud in first, then get the bolt back in place. At least that 8mm spanner is going to get use again. At least the front seal was not weeping, though probably at 100k the water pump change would be a good idea as well, seeing as you have to just about do the entire job again to get to the bolts for it as well.

    @erwyyn@erwyyn2 жыл бұрын
    • you just need to use a screwdriver and wedge it between 2 of the bolts holding the pulley so it stops the pulley turning as you loosen one of the other bolts and then just loosen all bolts in turn. he sounds like he is from either Zimbabwe or South Africa

      @hotmechanic222@hotmechanic222 Жыл бұрын
  • Very helpful video thank you. However you used the locking pin, which is only meant for doing up the bolt, to time the engine. The timing pin is the thinnest one, 5mm diameter; that is what you set the timing to if you want to be spot on. Also the pulley bolt should be torqued and then angle-tightened through a further 90 degrees as it is a torque to yield bolt. Just buzzing it with a gun is imprecise though probably works but if it doesn't and the pulley slips you wreck the engine.
