  • A fun little story based theory for minecraft I have is that every unique world exists as a single slice of a completed universe. If you teleport to the world border you see that the world still extends to the end of your render distance. The edges of each world are lined up beside each other, an infinite number of people all separated by some sort of innate natural force. It's a fun little theory for the story of the minecraft world and it adds a lot to the lonely feeling you describe

  • i believe that the loneliness really comes from all the creative power we have, yet nobody to show it to. you could build a massive city where you hand build every individual house, but who is going to live there? it's like panting a masterpiece and not being able to show it to anyone, or playing your best piano piece with nobody else in the room.

You build because you want to build for the sake of it, to improve your craft and see your creative capabilities. It is an experience for yourself. Although yeah, I understand your comment. You wish to seek a response, like an input from the things you have a built. To feel that you actually interacted with something.

The huge empty halls that lead to places that seem to hold a purpose yet they are useless, the poor ilumination arround the hallways an the ceiling, leaving patches of dark everywhere, the hollow walls and ceilings you weren't supposed to find revealing themselves once you break a wall in the right place. Truly unnerving.

  • this reminds me of a shorty story i wrote for my english class about a girl named nethina in her world who was the only one aware of her existence and the only kind of her species. In her world there was “town workers” (villagers), “night creatures” (mobs), and animals only. So everyday nethina would explore her world searching for someone else that was just like her. And one day another person, Mira, suddenly came across Nethina’s home. At first it scary for nethina to encounter someone like her, she had lots of questions but after a whole long night of talking and Mira answering all of Nethina’s questions, it was just everything nethina wanted, a friend. So Mira invited nethina to go back with her to her home but nethina was hesitant so Mira told her to make her decision and then meet her in the forest at a certain time. Mira left and time passed to nethina went to the spot but Mira never showed up. Nethina waited for hours and days until she became extremely desperate. She started making lots of potions, burying them in the ground in hopes to spawn her own creature friend, someone like Mira. She continued this for years and years until she died of bad health. That’s when her potions started to work but instead created bad creatures causing her world to turn into this red skies, scorching hot waterfalls world (the nether). But in the end Mira came across nethina because Mira accidentally created a nether portal so when Mira returned to her home, she was unable to go back cause she didn’t know how to recreate the portal. She didn’t ditch nethina at all. But it was just a tragic story for nethina cause she lost the thing she searched her whole life for. Which is why her tragic experience created the nether decades later. LOL but I got an A on that assignment. And also the name nethina does come from nether lol

You recognize the shape of another player innately- some mobs, like villagers or zombies, come close, but still not close enough that you'd ever mistake them for a player. The idea of thinking you're alone and then seeing that distinctive shape out of the corner of your eye is wonderfully frightening. Plus the idea that something malevolent also has the same power that you do over the world.

  • As someone who has played less lonely games of the same genre, such as Terraria, Starbound and Dragon Quest Builders, I think the main cause of lonliness in Minecraft is the fact that there are no _characters_ in the game. None with their own unique personalities that you can talk to. In Terraria, the NPCs have their own personalities and tastes and have unique things to say when you interact with them. In Starbound, there are characters everywhere, who react to your every decision and spill lore. In Dragon Quest Builders, you have characters and NPCs that you can ask to follow you around, all without the fear of them dying (if their HP reaches 0, they faint for a bit until they recover). In Minecraft, there is no one you can properly interact and socialise with. And the friends you do make you lock up and stay far away from because if they die, they don't respawn. And you're too afraid of that happening to them.

As a result, I tend to prefer flat creative worlds, as I can treat it more as a blank canvas to test systems, mechanics, and building in. • This scenario just happened to me: You are really eager to make a nice house for yourself in Minecraft, everything from the location to the final block has been thought out thoroughly. After an amount of days, you have successfully created the perfect house for yourself, perfect size, perfect layout and a perfect location. After you admire your now completed house, you go on your balcony, stare endlessly into the seemingly infinite world and think "it really is just me here...". You start to think if anything was there before your house, will anything be there in the future? Will anyone ever be able to admire my creation? Is the location I chose to build a significant one? Is there anything out there that I can't reach? I can't exactly describe the feeling that it gives you but I'm sure some of you understand. It is not the fear of being alone that scares us, it's the fear of not being alone.

    • Me too. I remember when I dug out a mining area for myself in a small old world on mobile (Btw there was no caves back then.. this was when Minecraft for mobile was just that. A lesser version for a phone. We only had 4 spawn eggs back then and a very limited creative inventory) For some reason.. and idk why.. I dug it out like an actual cave on accident. It was very easy to get lost in it and when I did, I got very very nervous. I kept thinking I’d turn the corner and see something there or.. something peaking out at me from a dark area. Sometimes the anticipation and expectation of something looming is more frightening than there actually being something there.

This means that if the ancient builders really did spawn the wither, then whatever they did had deadly consequences. Those consequences would include their souls being trapped in a brown sand, and most importantly… a curse that causes the player, you, me, everyone.. to be eternally lonely, bearing a curse that the ones that came before us brought.

  • I never really thought about the experience as one of being "lonely" in Minecraft singleplayer, but that might be because I've always enjoyed dead and silent spaces devoid of life where nobody and nothing will disrupt me. Playing on any mode except Peaceful or Creative was constantly scary to me, because I knew that mobs could sneak up on me and even blow my stuff up. I was never afraid of being alone, I was rather afraid that I might *not* be. Exploring the caves especially felt like a proper horror game to me. • I was obsessed with Minecraft in the year preceding the jungle update. Back then, I played on Xbox, and my parents were divorced, so I could only play half the time. When I was at my mom's house (without the Xbox), I watched hours of videos about the coming update. After a short time, the KZhead algorithm pooled in other Minecraft content, and I started watching Hunger Games and other types of Minecraft videos. I fell in love with these videos, so much so that I started watching them even at my dad's house, when I could've been playing myself. There were so many great moments with java players having fun with the jungle update and laughing together. I kept telling myself that I'd play a ton when the update came out on xbox. I was so excited. When the update finally dropped, I dropped everything to play it. I hopped in creative mode and checked out the new features with my brothers. Everything was so thrilling: I could finally play with all these features I'd been waiting months for! And months are a long time when you've only been living just over a decade. Anyways, we exhausted the new features in the creative world, saw everything in our hands. Then my brother left me to play on my own. That's when the feeling hit me. I'd spent months watching all these friends come together and enjoy the update, and I'd felt that I was there with them. Only in my own world did I realize that I was alone, that nobody else was there to share the journey with me. I told myself that I'd just grown jaded with the jungle update by waiting so long for it, but in reality, I was scared to be in the world where nobody heard my voice. Even now, I struggle with playing Minecraft or any games like it alone. Ark: Survival Evolved gives me a similar feeling when nobody sits with me as I play it. My phase of playing that game ended when my roommates stopped joining me in the living room to talk over a tame. Minecraft doesn't talk to you. When you're done getting perfect gear and beating the bosses, the game doesn't give you much more in the way of objectives. Eventually, you're left roaming a sandbox so big it's a desert. In that silent roaming, when things are quiet and you're faced with the enormity of your freedom, you start to wonder about what you're doing and why you're doing it. You can ask those existential questions to the silent, quasi-infinite world of Minecraft, but I'll ask you: which do you fear more: an answer or an echo?

That's how MC got me to appreciate game design - how there are different ideas of fun and all sorts of different video game genres! The importance of focus and specialization. Whenever I get lonely in MC, that's how I know I should boot up a different game, or do something else than gaming entirely.

  • I must be super introverted, because the loneliness is what I absolutely love about this game. Been playing for six years, mostly survival. Sometimes my husband joins in (he likes building crazy things) but there are some games saved that I jokingly tell him are for "only me," this game is like my zen garden STAY OUT lol.

  • This game has taught me so much: the limitations of resources, the need to be patient, the need to be brave, the need to learn from others, and also the loneliness and responsibility that comes from being truly the only master of my life; only I can make the decisions within myself, when I'm alone in the quiet of my own conscience. What a fantastic source of contemplation from such a simple game.

    • That's so well said! The mention of limited resources in Minecraft reminded me of a one time when I ate the last potato and realised that it in fact was the last. I had forgot to plant some of them when I had picked them up and had foolishly baked them all. I was completely out of food and had to go search the world to find a village with potatoes and eat other food sources in the meantime. (I always use baked potatoes as my main source of food in minecraft, because they're one of my favorite foods in real life)

  • playing minecraft alone, to me, gives off the same feeling as looking at those liminal space videos. also the feeling of wandering around in a vast world where you're the only living being, with the exception of mobs and villagers of course and it almost feels post-apocalyptic.

When the piglins first came out I became really interested, because while they didn't have great trades like villagers, houses or were friendly, they had a much more complex behavior and those dances, you know, they felt more human

I built a house on the edge of an island overlooking a vast sea, where my house is lit by those glowberry vines. My cat Merlo sleeps on my avatar every night, and it's really cozy and alone. It's beautiful.

  • Yes this is it, it explains it so well i remember when i started playing Minecraft back when i was 12 or so can't quite remember i always played in multiplayer, I've never touched singleplayer, because it felt so lonely and borderline creepy and scary, but as i grew up it tempted me to the point that i play exclusively in singleplayer and here's my theory to that: the younger we are the more we want to connect to other, experience the world, we want to be adult's and we achieve that in multiplayer rp servers in a way, but the more we grow the more the world hurts us, the more we want to be left alone, no pressure, no rules, no limits, just us, alone with ourselves...and this is currently,in the last few years very true for myself, there is something therapeutic about being able to have full freedom and being able to escape the real world even if it is for only an hour a day. Yes the game can feel creepy at times still but, i would pick singleplayer over multiplayer at this point any time of the week. Sorry for the long ass comment tho :)
