Puppy Developmental Stages: Episode 6 | The Socialization Sweet Spot 12-16 Weeks
These puppies are growing up fast! Join Uncle Stonnie as he takes two 13 week old puppies through a fun and informative puppy training session. In this video we discuss puppy type, puppy socialization, and age appropriate training and socialization activities.
Puppies undergo rapid physical and mental changes between 12 and 16 weeks, so much so that we refer to this stage as the puppy training and socialization sweet spot! Owners should strive to use this time to optimize training and socialization opportunities. Remember what Uncle Stonnie always says, "Life is about realized potential!" Be sure to help your puppy realize it's full potential!
We hope you guys enjoy!

Do Malinois do well sleeping outside? Indoor kennel?
Stonnie, great content!!
@@SergioEsquivelK9 Thank you!
Love watching you channel. You are absolutely correct. I have a Malinois pup and GSD/ Malinois and they do my obstacle course completely different. The Full Malinois is a lot more agile and just flies through it. And my GSD/ Shepherd is a lot more mentally challenging. She is indeed a super smart booklet. :)
Just got my first pup, first time training. Black lab/ pit mix and he's the sweetest boah. He's about 16 weeks old, was abandoned, and just getting potty training and the basics down. You've helped me to be patient with him and reward him properly as well as getting ahead of bad behavior. Any tips to keep him from tearing things up when I'm away? Appreciate your work and willingness to share your knowledge Stonnie!
I love this guy. He is like the Bob ross of dog training
Stonnie's mantra: “Be persistent. Be consistent. Get outside. Get moving. Be interesting.” ...learn it, know it, live it!
That mantra works for people too!
Thanks for that. I will.
Stonnie's dog training mantra: "Be persistent, be consistent, get outside, get moving, and be interesting." Gee, that applies to humans verbatim!
Don't let perfection stand in the way of good enough. Quote of the year!! Thanks Uncle Stonnie!
Hey, Stonnie, I was so impressed by your talk about black labs mellowing out an ornery malinois that I thought this might also work on my ornery wife. Well, it didn't, and now I'm the one in the doghouse. lol
You are so proud of George 😍 you can here it in your voice👍
Yes I am!
Hard to believe your pups are already 12 wks old. My GSD puppies are due today! I am looking forward to giving them the absolute best start to life. Also praying momma has an easy time whelping them into the world 😆
Great training course, super presentation - Bill Grimmer
Stonnie, once again thank you so much for making dog training real and simple, avoiding drama and maximizing fun
I so enjoy seeing these puppies grow and learn. Big difference in their ears from last week!! Thanks for posting 🐕🐶
Thank you for watching!
The accelerated training you had to do...was way better for everyone mainly due to the lack of time most ppl have. This shows the way to do something faster so more ppl feel it is something they can do with their dog and are more likely to try
Man this channel is the best really reaffirming what I’m doing with my little Doberman puppy. A tired dog is a good dog
I have enjoyed watching a lot of your videos. You make this easy to understand and entertaining. I wish Cheyenne, WY was closer to KY as I would certainly like to take in person courses! We are anticipating the arrival of a malinois/german sheperd/dutch sheperd in July (it will be 8 weeks). I want to have a calm, polite, attentive dog. Now.... well mannered lab, I may find that among my friends. Thank you thank you thank you!
great video loved the targeting stick example of training both the dog and the trainer
Thank you!
Even though my dog is two years old, I have been taking her everywhere lately, she still somewhat anxious, but I see a change in her well she’s more comfortable. I can use both my hands if I’m not a counter in a store. It is so true I tire dog makes a good dog. Well yeah and I’m having lots of fun with her. Thank you.
Your videos are great.. our 13 week old Griff is extra hyper so your guidance has been helpful
How do you teach a puppy not to bark at other dogs? I bought a 15 week old German Shepherd. He was anxious and barked at every dog he saw. He disrupted the training class by barking. When I took him to stores, he was good until he saw another dog. How do you make sure a puppy doesn’t do that? Thank you. This puppy series was great. I appreciate it❣️
Thank you for another great upload Stony !
Stonnie damn those black labs whattt are they from earth!! I would love one for a mentor for the dogs I train. Love from Mexico 🇲🇽 Im big fan
You guys are so cool.... seriously what an amazing skill
Great video, Stonnie! I appreciate it.
Thank you for watching!
I love how dirpy they are as puppies😊
What I still cannot figure out os how does stonnie manage to have such super beautiful and morfologically perfect dogs of any breed he shows up with...really not easy to see such beautiful dogs...watch the faces the body, heads, hands...how does he make it?
A lot of it boils down to proper exercise. Everyone looks better when they are in shape!
Great video Stonnie! Always nice to know that everything doesn’t go perfectly with you either! He’s coming along....what a fine puppy!
Another great video!. So far I've been having good success implementing your training into my boxer pups routines. He is responding well. Thanks for everything Stonnie! Your videos are a game changer for us. Proving people wrong about boxers is awesome :) We couldn't do it without your advice!!
This is the first I’ve seen a video like this. I was giving myself so much pressure to expose but youre the first to give a real life idea of showing what you may do if some plans dont happen as you like. Do you believe that the reason a lot of dog trainers don’t talk about timeline and going old school is because people oftentimes don’t tire out their dog enough and this creating anxiety for the dog?
Another fantastic and informative video from the nest himself!! My 14 week lab is learning lots!!!
Pups are looking great Stonnie thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for another great video and tips the different personalities really show
Great video Stonnie. Thank you for sharing!
“oh no! broke my boat!” 😂
hey Stonnie. I'm always amazed by how your dogs can walk the course without being distracted by the other dogs around. any tips for how to get there? my black lab :) is 6 months tomorrow and just want to say hi to every single dog. hes pretty good about walking on a leash otherwise. any ideas?
Thank you Stonnie :)
Than you for watching!
Great video. Oh no I broke my boat. lol
I LOL'd but only because my boat would've done the same thing!!
Stonnie, what you are saying and showing in this 'sweet spot' video is so important to me and my 14-wk-old Lab-Shep pup. I am working on getting her "calm, attentive, and polite." But she does get unruly. She bites at the targeting stick, fights with my shoelaces, wrestles with the cuffs of my pants when I'm trying to walk, etc. I run her up the mountain twice a day. But she has no fatigue level.
Keep your head up and keep plugging away. Some take more patience than others.
@@StonnieDennis Thank you, kindly, Stonnie. I shall keep that in mind.
Don't U wear shorts this time of year? Great vid!
Thank you for the another great video.!!
Good looking pups, nice tips.
Very nice puppy:)
Yay! Love seeing Charlie (and the other dogs) get in the boat!!
Great video! And I noticed a huge difference in Georgie using the targeting stick! He did fantastic in preparing his pup for the next move. It made them both look like the pros they are! Is that Golden pup that was running around today with the other dogs the same one that was up on the inspection table with the lab pups in your video of several weeks ago? That pup sure a looker no matter who he is!
No, that is a different Golden. This one's name is Cole, the other one was Whiskey.
Do you ever walk the small obstacles course going the other way?
Stonnie, I have just got my puppy and had his for 5 days now he has had his first vaccines but has to wait for his second lot in 2 wks time and then 1 to 2 wks after that b4 I can get him out with dogs and out to places more. Im not best pleased bec I want him doing as much as possible.... My question is have u ever had any Labs have joint issues in later life due to exercise... as my breeder is a no can do person and I dont wanna damage my pup or make him under socialised when it comes to the world around him.
Question: would you say that the targeting stick helps bring a deeper understanding of the obedience and manners for the dog? It just seems that this would be the natural result. I have a 5 month old Great Dane and he and I work a lot together. He’s a good “little” pup and we have a lot of fun in our training. I’d love to bring a deeper dimension into his skill level bc he’s very smart and willing and the potential for advancement seems really strong. I’d kind of like to see how far he can go and would love some news ways to help him excel.
I think pretty much anything that gets people and dogs working together cooperatively ends up having good results!
What dog treats do you use? Also where do you get the type of leashes that you use from?
Why ‘Dog-Crack’ of course!
What brand leash is that?
How do you do the 12-16 work when the breeder and vet say not to take them in public until after the third shot at 16 weeks?
I don’t listen to them..
Cant find a video that talks about food so decided to post here. My dogs food just got discontinued and I was wondering if you could recommend me the best food for a Belgium malinois please.
my guy is a GSD Mal mix I feed him Iams large breed puppy food supplemented with a whole egg shell and all three days a week. Two days he gets a raw frozen chicken drumstick and the other two days he gets a heaping tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt. basically Egg Monday morning drumstick Tuesday night yogurt Wednesday morning. then the cycle continues I also occasionally put some fresh wheat grass in there and maybe once a week he gets some fish oil but its probably not necessary
Stonnie what breed was that first puppy??? He was beautiful
Belgian Malinois pretty cool dogs if you are dedicated to training
Which two dogs did you keep. Is the female the bruiser or black sister?
Roller Derby Queen, LOL...
What breed is that Black and Tan puppy?
what kind of targeting stick do you use?
Doesn’t matter one bit.
@@StonnieDennis the one you use looks cool. ;) I like that it doesn't have the hug ball on the end, like most i've seen. Looking for something for my cats, and I think they would like it.
Stick work,just like training horses
Stonnie, do you have instructional videos on training puppies to be neutral? Focused, unfazed, not overly “social” with other people and dogs, but tolerant of those you are tolerant of? Non reactive yet not overly interested in others in other words?
I’m have about 300 videos demonstrating that exact type of behavior.
The fascinated mechanic analogically press because dragon undoubtedly compare except a juvenile ticket. incandescent, oval bicycle
As much as I appreciate the need for rescuing animals from a shelter... (OMG) here in Seattle, you read the profiles of these dogs in the shelters, and it's nothing but behavior issues which will need to be worked through. These are mostly 1-8 year old dogs. Nope, I need to find a good breeder with a puppy who will be a good house dog, who gets to go hunting once in a while with a 60+ year old man, who gets to go camping a few times a year, who gets to go fishing once in a while. I don't need a dog who's had a year to identify as a vegan with allergies and anxiety issues and a few phobias that growls at a red ball cap... and doesn't know whether to lift its leg or squat. LOL What a good lookin' troop of pups there.
