Portillo’s is a fast-casual restaurant chain considered a one-stop-shop for iconic Chicago foods. Founded in 1963 in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago, Portillo’s is known across the country for its hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, cheese fries, and chopped salads. But its best-kept secret is the restaurant’s cake shake. Insider's Medha Imam visited Portillo’s Summit, IL location to learn what goes into making the iconic cake shake. Rumor has it they put an entire slice of chocolate cake into their milkshake, making it a must-try dessert.

    • @@charlottefinnegan8136 Not so much about large people, is it? Many people find it very difficult to lose weight because of genes or hormonal imbalances, etc... even if they do eat right. It's just that America is continually and pro-actively searching for ways to make their people more gluttonous and unhealthy for a quick buck. Has anyone ever had leftovers from a cake and thought 'Lemme put this in a blender and guzzle it down because that'll make it taste better.' People would think you're a disgusting hog. It's in slight bad taste. Then again, most people aren't scheming up ways to make millions of dollars from friggin' leftovers. Hey, it's a free market and everyone is responsible for their own diet. I don't care. It's just pretty culturally... erm... typical.

  • I tried their cake in Orlando, Florida and I can confirm the cake is super chocolatey and super soft and moist! I was tempted to try their chocolate cake shake like comedian Gabriel Iglesias had mentioned but I was not confident enough to finish it all on my own 😅

  • I love how the girl explained that whole bit about how Portillo's would put leftover cake in a shake so as not to waste it, like this was some special idea that Portillo's thought of themselves. Cake shakes existed a very long time before anyone at Portillo's thought of them lol I remember seeing cake shakes on a class trip to Washington, D.C. when I was in the eighth grade.

    • Adults and kids alike do it here. It’s pretty common to see at least one person do this. Even if you’re in a school uniform, and people may judge, a lot of people like it. That’s kinda why Burger King came up with the idea to put ice cream and fries as a menu item here for some time. They forgot to account for the temp difference, resulting in a mess…but it was a noble attempt.

I have never been to Chicago, I'd never even heard of Portillo's before watching this, I couldn't even have the cake shake if I went there because I have food allergies and I know this would make me sick.   • when I went to order the cake shake, there were only two sizes. Small and Large, I said I wanted medium and the woman replied ' we dont have a medium, you can get a small, out small is as big as a medium' then I remembered which country Im in right now. Tastes amazing. The cake is very fluffy, moist and melts in your mouth. It would be better if they put a bit less of that icing or atleast put less sugar in the icing

    • Sure people from illinois eat there, they also eat at McDonald's. Portillos has sucked since it was sold out. It's a hyped up tourist attraction. There are a million better places to eat in the Chicago area if you're unfortunate enough to be there.
