They did nothing, the book did xD. It's the same ending as in the book. Season 1 was book 1 so we will get 3 seasons, if we're lucky. I can reassure you, the (book) series ends with a completed, happy ending. Book 2 also ends with a cliffhanger. So that you know in advance.
