I Put A Wind Mill On My Camper Van

 I came up with a crazy idea to install a wind turbine on the front of my camper van. We didn’t have much experience with windmills or wind turbines but we did our best and it ended up working great.
We live out of our camper, van full time and plan on continuing to make all types of building videos for you guys.
Thank you so much for watching and don’t forget to click the subscribe button.

  • When you are driving you have an alternator producing electricity. The wind turbine causes the van to use more energy than usual to power it

  • You already have a built in generator.. Get an isolator circuit going from your alternator to your lithium batteries. Have a switch to toggle when you’re on long hauls. The wind turbine you’ve made isn’t efficient enough (good attempt tho). It’s just going to add drag to your vehicle. Hope this helps. The van y’all have made is awesome! And glad yall stayed safe in that wreck. Could’ve been very bad it sounded like

  • Better, safer and less maintenance to upgrade your alternator to higher charging one. I got a shop that rewired my alternator to almost double the amperage. It does consume more gasoline and is the one drawback but will charge a battery bank easily.

  • I think it works. mileage with and without the generator will tell if it produces more energy than it uses. With a funnel and a airflow outlet behind the fan, it should work even better.

  • That's a cool concept and great implementation! Not to be a downer, but I bet a larger alternator would be more efficient, but probably wouldn't net nearly as many clicks and views. 😊 However, if you built it into the top, probably ducted for safety and since your "wind direction" while moving would be constant, then I like the idea that it could work while parked. Maybe a ducted fan/generator that you could swivel while stationary.

    • Exactly what I came here to say. A good alternator would have worked better…. But when you factor in the amount of drag you’re adding with this you may as well just add a second belt driven alternator rather than this goofy looking fan that only works when the vehicle is driven anyway. At least an alternator could do much more at idle. And can be done for only a few hundred bucks and some ingenuity.

Seriously. You probably think adding an alternator to an electric vehicle to recharge the batteries as you drive is a great idea too. 🤨

    @benashbaugh5982@benashbaugh5982 Жыл бұрын
  • This was an understandable idea, but a voltage range of 0 to 12v is actually useless. The engine of your van aready has a computer regulated high output alternator that will produce a steady 14v (or thereabout) at any RPM, as required to fully charge a '12v' car battery . A very usefull addition is dual batteries with an isolator so that you cannot discharge the battery that starts the engine. The isolator will automatically prevent damage from a complete discharge of your 'overnight' battery and will automatically charge that battery once you start the engine.

Does this concept produce any benefit over using the electrical system that comes on the van? Unfortunately not. Any electricity produced by the turbine is off set by the extra fuel you will consume. I encourage you to research the scientific method and apply it to some tests to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of your system. I'm sure you will find it interesting.

  • Hmmm, fun idea, but aren't you just increasing drag and now converting increased fuel consumption into electricity? How about adding a Victron DC-DC charger and a tap from your alternator?

    @duncanjames914@duncanjames914 Жыл бұрын
    • This is correct we do have a 250 amp alternator and a Victron Orion, DC to DC charger, but we decided to make this video just to see if we can produce some electricity from the wind off the interstate. But we don’t plan on keeping this wind turbine. It was really just a test but thanks for watching. ✌️

  • Could you harness the spinning wheels energy instead?

    @luvmylips@luvmylips Жыл бұрын
    • Great question! I believe we can by adding a pulley to the wheel and attaching it to an alternator I’m not sure why Tesla does not do it.

  • That is coming from burning fuel! No gain there, much more efficient to use the car alternator , still at cost of extra fuel.

    • Completely agree we felt a slight drag when we were on the interstate. We don’t plan on keeping this wind turbine. We just built it to learn more about different ways to produce electricity. Thanks for watching.✌️

    • @beerrunbus a channel who quit KZhead a few years ago, installed one on an RV. The noise and vibrations constantly shook the RV. Several others tried it and determined the efficiency loss was a negative

      @Scrambler85@Scrambler85 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Scrambler85 this one did not include any vibrations at all, and it also didn’t really make much noise. But I did feel a slight lag in the acceleration of the van. Our goal is to continue to build cool things to help inspire other people to do the same. If you have any recommendations on what we should do next, let me know. ✌️

  • I get it, this is for clicks far more than practical. Simple physics or common sense points to the flaw in the idea. My bugger concern is the people that will take this seriously and attempt this resulting in dangerous mishap, tickets/fines, or just best case scenario wasted money to see this does not net any positive electrical return.

  • So, you converted gasoline into electricity by creating more drag. LOL. I think there is something in the engine for that much more efficient.

    • does it really add more drag tho? its a big van, im sure it already had a buncha drag, and when the fan starts spinnin, wind freely moves through it.

      @user-it6bx9tt5h@user-it6bx9tt5hАй бұрын
    • Trust me, it does. And the winds certainly not moves through it. It changes the density and force irregularely. Also it is below a bit to actually catch a stream of wind, otherwise the compressed air in front would slow its rotation enormously. @@user-it6bx9tt5h
