It’s time for an electric car range test you didn’t realise you needed… Until today!
We’ve got the all new Audi RS e-tron GT going up against the Tesla Model S Long Range as they go head-to-head in a race from Inverness in Scotland to central London - a journey of almost 600 miles!
Now of course, neither car has enough range to complete the journey in one trip, so there will be stop offs involved - and it's going to be oh-so hard to guess how this one may play out!
The Model S Long Range has (in case the name didn't give it away...) superior range, with the ability to last 388 miles on a single charge, while the Audi only has a claimed range of 283 miles. However the Audi has the upper hand when it comes to charging, with the ability to charge at up to 270kWh… If the driver can find a fast enough charger!
So who’s your money on, the all-new e-tron GT, or the Model S? There’s only one way to find out which will be victorious… LET’S RACE!

Even with all the drag races they do, the most intense race ever was an electric car economy/range run. Awesome content!!
It's actually like that owning one too. There is a different kind of fun to driving EV's (other than blistering 0-60's which get boring in electric vehicles - Vs Manual ICE's). Especially when the top efficiency scores are almost unattainable - whether on short or long journeys. My wife thinks I've had a lobotomy when I drive the EV as every other second that I breathe, I'm a die hard petrol head! The EV is hers, the V6 supercharge, flat 6 NA and 1000cc sports bike are mine.
Damn, Richard really made this video even more pleasant to watch. Good staff!!
With 7 miles of range left, imagine if it had been Richard that had made a wrong turn, or there'd been a bit of motorway closed, with an enforced diversion (which happens quite frequently to me, in my experience).

Yeah definitely
the intensity gave me top gear vibes with clarkson, hammond, and may… they would always race and it always came down to the wire…
I know what you mean. But there’s nothing that compares to the old days of top gear specials. Life was just a lot better than.
While old Top Gear was fun, it was partially scripted and the dramatic editing adds a lot to the suspense. This is much more raw and unscripted which i guess makes it more genuine? Love them either way though.
Yeah top gear was scripted but do that 3 men had a personality 🤗damn. It was never about the cars when they were on
Those were such simple times lol
Throwback to Clarkson taking that V8 Audi to Scotland on one tank.
one of the big take aways here for me, is that trip took about the same as it does in an ICE car. Showing that charge times at that kinda of journey dont really impact the overall journey time.
FALSE!! ICE is a significantly shorter journey. Don't fall for the EV lies
One of the best tests I've watched, regardless of what type of 'fuel' is being used. Apart from using £100k cars, the rest was very representative of real world. Do this same test with a Peugeot e208, id3, Ioniq, etc (more attainable cars) and there could be no better test. Superb. Well done.

Drive like you normally would.... "I'm going to skip this scheduled stop and go to the next one" 2% battery is how we would all drive it!
Well, thats pretty "normal" behavior for people I know, who own EVs. Its a lifestyle, I pressume.
That's how I drive it
Yeah well thats how I drive my electric car also. No need to stay between 20->90% chargerate. Ive owned my Tesla since 2014. Works perfect. First couple of times you go down Below 0% indicated range/charge you get a bit scared. But I have never gone totally out of charge, even though I have done that sort of drives at least 20 times sofar. Just waste of time to stop and charge if you know you will get to a destination with charging capability. I drive it down to 1-5% and then instantly connect the charge cable when I get home. Not always, but when needed. Still has over 95% of battery capacity left. 100.000km driven sofar.
Pretty normal see it all the time. No need to stop so soon when you know you can make it to the next one

When range beats bladder capacity - then the EV's no longer really the limitation.
I've had an EV for a year now and this is EXACTLY correct.
Assuming good charging infrastructure, obviously.
they need the greater range for towing
It still is, if it charges slow.. Like in the Tesla, they still needed to wait for it to finish charging, even after their wee.

@@enigmaPL so rather than take tho opportunity to explain, you take the opportunity to be smug. That says a lot.
You are kind of right. When I got my first EV in 2014 a 220 mile trip involved an hour of pre-planning and three stops of ~40 minutes each. I’ve just ordered an ID.3 Tour (77kWh) and I know that I need to stop more often than the car does (because I have the bladder of a man in his fifties) so the plan for long journeys now is just to plug it in every time I need to stop. However, the charging infrastructure has always been there since 2014; it’s less reliable than it was seven years ago, and upgrades aren’t rolling out as fast as they could, but as long as you keep a contingency (20% on the ID.3 would be >50 miles) and use ZapMap or Plugshare, you will always find a working charger when you need one.
Such an amazing program, thank you! You deserve 10 likes!
Respect to mat for traveling from Scotland to London for a video. Well it paid off because this video was amazing
"Drive like you'd normally do" range decreased by 50%

Mat, what radios are you using with Richard? Excellent reviews, thank you.
god that audi charges fast...
Charges quick because the capacity is tiny. Its gonna get more % than the tesla because the tesla has more than double the range.. however 80% in the audi is more like 40% in a tesla.
@@iCozzh i am not taking about range, i am talking about the charging speed. it was charging at 250 kwh, while the tesla was doing around 100-150 kwh and also if i remember correctly the audi like taycan has 800v architecture which would mean it can charge at insane speeds even close to full. The newer Tesla might do that speed too but still it is impressive...
@@superchargedpetrolhead the newer teslas cant go that high and for good reason, it rinses the life span of the battery (aka engine because its by far the majority of the £ for these cars) If you charge your iphone with a 99v charger you get that comes with the brand new macbook pros instead of the 5-12v its meant to charge at watch what happens. These “250kwh” chargers also wont last long as more and more people get evs and start having multiple cars at the station the output drops dramatically as seen at teslas superchargers which are often always full
@@iCozzh well if you charge at these chargers regularly then of course it is going to be a problem. But these would certainly make the road trip that you might take once or twice a year a bit more convenient.
Charges fast, degrades batteries fast. The question is - if you do have 85k to spare for such a car, do you even care if it becomes useless scrap in 5 years? But... still pretty NOT green in my view.
This is how electric endurance races should be like, charging pit stops.
This would be cool, cause racers would be able to powernap :)

dont bother just buy a diesel and you wouldnt need to stop. In a real life race my 1.6 diesel would leave both of those cars hours behind. Oooh my tesla does 0-60 in 3 seconds...yeah then you have to charge it.....backwards things are going
@@getthecansin Still, journeys requiring a range of a diesel is rare (which can be rented on those rare times). So, BEV ownership still makes sense.
