It's surreal to think of all these people we are seeing as young and healthy who have since lived their lives and passed. Much the same as we will.

Yes, everyone was young once, nowadays when I look at old people I consider them in their entirety... child, youth, young adult, doing all the same things we've done and will do. We are all travellers on that same journey and that big wheel keeps on spinning. But I think I'd prefer it if it started bad and got progressively better rather than the other way round.

in fairness, not all saw death, cruelty, misery and "error". some probably saw those, others saw bombing destruction, the soldiers saw deaths. today, we see the death, destruction, misery and cruelty all uploaded, compressed and summarized to us all at once in TV, videos, the internet and history books -- so today, we "see it all" and "know it all". but they, those in the camera, didn't "see or know it all" at the time. they were just beginning to find out. so, of course, they were all smiling. but i agree life and the human spirit is an unstoppable force.
Never did they know that people would be watching them through that film decades later sitting in their home on a laptop or any screen.

The film was for posterity and not widely circulated; for example, shown to the public in movie theaters, and so has retained its quality over the years. Restoration was likely done to adjust the color, which changes on photographic film over long periods, even when stored carefully.
The old Kodachrome film was excellent. Very stable too.
Recorded on magnetic film. You can produce 4k resolution from this film If you like. Because resolution quality is nearly eternal with magnetic films. It depends on what conditions do you have to produce the desired quality.

One thing that amazes me in my life time of observation of films, photos and things like this is the incredible amount of concrete the Germans used in everything everywhere. From the autobon to bunkers, pillboxes and the zigfried line.So many bomb shelters just for Hitler alone. Reinforced concrete in everything.

It's interesting to note the physical differences in the Soviet soldiers. There is quite a number of ethnicities represented. For so long I imaged the Soviets to all be physically similar, never taking the time to think how vast the USSR was and all the ethnicities encompassed within it.
The USSR contained over 200 etnic groups it was the largest country in excistence

@@Steelhorsecowboy I am Ex-soviet. I am Asian. There was no racism in the USSR like in the USA for example . We had newspapers, TV channel, schools, cinema studio on our native language. We had equal rights. At institutes and universities we had 2 departements of the same faculty for example. One was for Russian speaking and the second was for native speaking students. The programme was the same. Of course for making a good carreer you should learn Russian. It was rather easy as there were a lot of Russians around you. By the way my grandpa, Kazakh by nationality, was at ww2. And Granny of my husband was there too. She was is Soviet Korean. She was badly wounded there , no one eye.

This footage is amazingly poetic and surprisingly relaxing. The calm after the battle: at last peace, beach and golf served with a beautiful music by Antoine Marsaud.
Always refreshing to see actual footage! Notice how Soviet soldier group is different to other allies? Tells you a lot about demographic impact of war on Soviet Union. There is lot of women, men of all ages and different ethnics. For Soviets it was all out war, and it decimated young population. Other allied soldiers are mostly represented by young men of drafting age.

I went into the Marine Corps in 1977 and we were taught how to fight Soviets. 21 years later I was attending training at the FBI Academy in Virginia. One of my classmates was from Russia, and he joined a local FBI band in singing "Back in the USSR." Truly surreal. I remember thinking we were both trained to kill each other, and now we were going to class together.

Read the documents with discussions between Stalin and Hitler - scholars have now found Stalin to have negotiated very intelligently and responsibly with enormous efforts to stop an invasion without the use of force on either side but Germany just went in and started slaughtering most of the towns and villages they passed.

The quality of this is mind boggling , by far the best footage ive ever seen from WW2 . really shows the human element to the point that you almost feel as if you are there in person watching it. really amazes me how at ease everyone is considering they were killing each other ony a few weeks / months before . Also incredible how modern Germany was at the time, road and rail almost looks like the 80s Thank you so much for this .

Every time I see this type of videos, I start wondering what their life was before,during and after the war
Peace
Remember before the war was the great depression, from 1929 onwards. So for most people, despite the peace, it would've been difficult. During the war, naturally life was extremely dangerous and even harder. Consequently after the war the country was in complete ruin by the sheer weight of death and destruction, so life would've been very hard! I guess you could count yourself lucky if you survived it one piece. Picking up the pieces in the aftermath would've been a long, arduous and mentally painful process. Given the level of death and destruction it would've required years/decades to recover for most people. However, there would've also been many people that never really recovered, losing their sanity and health in that whole ugly period before and during the war!
Wow amazing! I teared up realizing that all those people are just like us, did the things we did. Just at a different time. Everyone on the film is smiling and happy - the war is finally over. And that was so great to see!
Great to see for the USA, Britain and USSR people! ONLY! Not great for Germany or my country, Bulgaria, which became a fuc*in bolshevik country after we lost the war with Germany!

He fought alongside Audie Murphy in the US 3rd Infantry Division, and was there when they blew the giant swastika on top of Nuremberg stadium as well as the raid on Eagle's Nest 💪🏼😎

Start of the film says everything, the autobahn to Berlin that was built before the war (pre 1339) and then bombed by the British and American air forces for 3 years solid is in a better condition than my local roads in England in 2021, fucking great.

Amazing footage. Surreal, unbelievable. Watching this, seeing the lucky Berliners who got tosurvive both the regime, the onslaught from the allies, and then the final, chaotic, destcrutive days. And seeing the Soviet allies marching, knowing that soon there will be animosity and that Berlin will become 2. And the autobahn looks immaculate!
When you were in Berlin during that time, you were not lucky. You were lucky if you were somewhere in west Germany, far from the Soviet frontlines.
Ntcrwlr - I’m guessing that the grass around the autobahn was mowed after the war was over. I’d hate to be cutting the grass around the autobahn in early 1945! I’m surprised the allies didn’t destroy the autobahn around Berlin. I’m guessing both sides wanted to use it.

A lot of them headed to the western corridor away from the Soviet’s. In 1961 the East Germans and Soviet’s had enough and built the wall. When the German commanders are telling their own people to run towards the Americans and British, you can imagine just how bad being in Soviet occupation was going to be. If Eisenhower had not held the reigns on Patton, Czechia, would have never fallen to the Russians and hell he may have been in Berlin a month before the Russians. Of all the field commanders the Germans feared him the most.

It’s amazing how ethnically diverse the Red Army was. I know the German army and SS were also super diverse but a lot of the nationalities were segregated and organised into separate units. However in the Red Army you constantly see Caucasian males and females walking along side Asians. Very intriguing
How are you surprised by this? The Soviet Union had a wide variety of ethnicities within its borders so naturally that reflected back in the army. And the Soviet Union suffered massive casualties during the war so they were very reliant on their Siberian minorities to refill their ranks and there weren't enough Russians and Slavic peoples to do that. Germany and other European countries on the other hand were almost entirely of caucasian stock. Also the Germany army wasn't super diverse at all it was the national army of Germany so you would have seen only Germans. But yes the SS did have foreign units but most of them came from other European countries.
@@hazzmati because when people think of the Soviet Union they just think “oh that was just Russia when it was communist” but it was much bigger than Russia and had like 13 republics and satellite states etc. the SS was probably more diverse though. German, Belgian, Flemish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Baltic, Slavic, Yugoslavic, Spanish, French, Indian, American and even a few hundred British fought in the SS.
Thinking about how diverse the SS was cracks me up, wasn’t their whole thing supposed to be about aryan Germanic people 😂

Actually not. That was a good quality 16mm film camera. You should see movies made with 35mm cameras. The picture quality is HD P.S. The film material is also vital, this Kodachrome film here is top notch even today.

If you had then you would know most autobahns have speed limits and those very few that do are mostly in Bavaria with only stretches that have no speed limits. Those stretches are no longer than 50 km at longest or more than 20-22 miles long.
