The Differences Between Pep Guardiola and Erik Ten Hag’s Tactics
Sunday’s Manchester Derby marks the first meeting between Pep Guardiola and Erik Ten Hag in opposite dugouts. Both are tactically very good managers and it’s clear that the Manchester United boss has been influenced by the former Bayern Munich & Barcelona tactician. The duo actually worked in Bavaria at the same time and you could see the inspiration and similarities in Ten Hag’s Ajax to Guardiola’s Man City from last season.
Ten Hag is only just starting out at Old Trafford but you can already see his influence on his side. Meanwhile, Manchester City are undergoing a transition under Guardiola thanks to the arrival of Erling Haaland. In this video I’m going to take a look at the similarities and the differences between the two managers and compare their Manchester team’s tactics.

One big difference stylistically. Pep is happy for the ball to be moved from side to side while Ten Hag is looking for line breaking progressive passes that can transition from back to front very quickly
that is manchester united playing style since sir alex ferguson
@@abdulmaleekagodirin168 since Sir Matt Busby more like!
Direct football
That's because this team is not playing according to his philosophy. And he tried playing according to his playing style early on in the season and we got punished by Brentford and Brighton. Once his team is in place we'll start dominating possession.
Wasn't it side to side passing that won him 4 titles wins of "the best league in the world"?
This game feels like another one of these where United should have no chance but a gut feelings tells that they gonna win
Definitely do a vid on the 9 position!
As a number 9 enthusiast, I'd absolutely love to see you do a video on their resurgence!
Has anyone also noticed how Pep has revolutionised the physicality of this current team. Previously City players were small and quick. Now only Bernado & Foden are small. The rest are big and tall. All his signings in the summer are big and tall. Haaland, Akanji, Kalvin-Phillips. In the CL match, he had Cancelo, Dias, Akanji, Walker, Rodri. Back 5 of very big strong men. Secondly, hes now comfortable to let defenders defend. That back 5 (Rodri included), are now made to sit back and defend and allow the two front 8 to push on. Where as before sometimes Cancelo or Walker would bomb on to support the attack. They can also now play more on the counter attack, especially in the CL. KDB & Haarland axis allows them to do that. These are probably two things that Pep identified as the major reasons why he couldnt win the CL in the last 3 or 4 seasons. I remember his team being bullied by Atletico Madrid physically last season & Lyon maybe 3 years ago. PSG gave them a hard game on the counter with Mbappes pace in behind. Pep is not just going for the PL, hes gunning for the CL this season. On the other hand, Liverpool players are getting leaner and shorter and quicker & more technical. Its a very interesting dynamic to see.
Great observation !
And they did win the champions league. You know your football
I remember Martinez playing against Haaland in the Champions League and considering the difference in size Martinez played brilliantly against him. 🔥🔥🔥
I think aside the similarities in tactics, EtH is adding fast and direct style of play with some dangerous and piercing passes in attacking transitions. Which makes him dynamic and fearful, unlike Pep who mostly likes to hold the ball.
This is the biggest difference, as much as ETH wants his teams to control possession, he isn’t happy for his teams to slowly move the ball side to side like Peps, he wants line breaking passes when the opportunities arriss
@@samn90834 With Eriksen, We Now Have Somebody Who's Capable Of Doing That.
Only positive vibes here 😂 hope we get result tomorrow even a draw
@@pariatmawkhiew This is scary cause United is also one injury away for the midfield to collapse, we dont have a valid replacement for Eriksen
I mean I'm a city fan but you are actually right and i agree with you on this. City really like holding the ball
I think the biggest difference is how EtH uses his wingers less wide than Pep's city which looks to stretch the defence and open up the half space for KDB or Silva/Cancelo to exploit. United on the other hand look for short combination play between Antony, Dalot and Bruno or on the other side Sancho, Malacia and Eriksen when playing high off the pitch (goal against Sherriff). WE DEMAND THE RETURN OF THE NUMBER 9 VIDEO🤣PLEASE🥺
As much as I’m loving the resurgence under ETH, we cannot ignore how ruthless and dominant this City side is currently looking. Villa managed to get a draw so there is some hope, I’ll be happy with a draw, a win just doesn’t seem feasible atm.
They've been vulnerable this season, we can definitely get at them. We've got a decent record at Eastlands too, so I'm optimistic.
Man u have more wins h2hbat etihad in the last 10 games.. So
united will win
@@nnaemekastephen lol, they are bad.
Pep's style is based upon strict positional play during different phases of the game. His system involves utilizing the entire width of the pitch to create half spaces for City's attacking midfielders to exploit. Also Pep's system is known for his use of Inverted fullbacks. Both Cancelo and Walker act as makeshift midfielders alongside Rodri while the other 2 attacking midfielders push up in the half spaces. When City have the ball, their formation is more of a 2-3-5 or a 3-2-5 (during build up play).
I think Eriksen and Bruno exploiting Rashford's pace on the counter will be key to us getting something out of this game. If we win this, can we start drinking the ten Hag cool aid?
Rashy might not play tho, and thats what has me really concerned
Not yet, winning through counter attacking is not sustainable as we saw it under Ole, I'd rather lose 5 games in a row while trying to play the right way, just like what Arsenal did last season, look at them now
@@prestozer We all know ten Hag wants more possession and control, till then, he'll have to adjust his tactics like he did against Arsenal and Liverpool. City has always been vulnerable to the counter attack. Might as well exploit it in the meantime.
@@prestozer That liberty may be available to the manager of Arsenal FC but not to the manager of Manchester United FC. That's the way it is.
I've been waiting for this video for a very long time. Thanks.
Waiting for this video for so long😁
@Statman Dave the king of stats and tactics I love your content cause of your deep understanding of football and analysis My best football channel is always reliable and accurate with everything
It’s city’s game to lose. I’d be extremely happy to come away with a draw. I’d be happy if we lose by 1 but give them a good game. Ten hag is 2 months into his rebuild, peps had a decade to perfect his team. Hopefully it’ll be a good game
Honestly get a grip of your bollocks
As a man utd fan...I expect nothing less than a win in every match we go into.
@@AmbaCode fair dos mate. I expect a good game from them. No reason why we can’t get a win there but I think it’s realistic to say a draws a good result
Yessir, would love to see a vid about the resurgence of number 9s
Could you do one for Arsenal & Tottenham Love your content by the way, keep at it bro
Good video. Can you do something simiar for Pep vs Arteta. And Arteta vs ETH.
This is just slick statman
Finally, some1 with United content that I actually want. Keep it bro
Good content mate.
Would really love to see a video on the resurgence of no 9s
YEAH! we need a video on that video. The transition from false 9 to real 9 again.
Yes please bring analysis on how number 9 striker was made. I read it somewhere about the psychology behind number 9 striker that they were grown in the community that was very hard when they were young and when they became a striker they become a really good striker. It's like they're growing in the street or harsh community or having a tough life but then all it was translated into a fighting Spirit number 9 striker. Hope it makes sense
can you send me the link to the study plz
Took you long enough to get back to making this type of videos 👍
Great content, I just had to like and subscribe
Yes, Dave, do a video on the return of the number 9s
Might just come down to player quality and consistency. Man Utd need another year or two to seriously challenge the current Man City for anything that isn't a loss or draw. Will be interesting to see how Ten Hag changes his tactics to play against City.
am impressed thanks Stats
Return of the number nine vid sounds sick pls do it
I’d be interested to see an analysis of the past 3 prem matches and how the stats from them compare to Pep’s Man City averages. We’ve started pressing a whole lot more.
This man is soo intelligent😮❤
Please do a video on the return of strikers...
Statman Dave please do a video on the return of the number 9/striker
Return of the no9 position. Let's go Dave 💪
Yes Dave I’d watch that no9 vid 👍🏻
Return of the nr 9 video 😤
Patrick Shick aswell. Could be top tier in the coming seasons. Definitely do a no.9 upload
No. 9 vid please Dave . . . . you know you want too. . .
Video on the Return of the number 9 sounds good.
Hope you enjoyed Dublin dave
This is a game to watch 🙂👍
would love to see the video
please do a video on the number 9 resurgence
I'd love a video on the return of the #9
It breaks my brain and horrifies me to think how many hours Ten Hag has put into strategy for this game. GGMU
I said do this video and he did it🤯🤯🤯
You're definitely on point
good stuff
Can't wait for Martinez to absolutely boss Haaland on Sunday
We'll be back here on Sunday after the Derby
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭 Martinez is 4 feet tall he couldn't boss a kindergarten class
@@RralRonaldo watch ajax vs dortmund last year. Then you can see how Martinez bossed Haaland
@@RralRonaldo Same old replys but strangely enough he won more header than van dijk this season, weird right ?
@@RralRonaldo 🤣😅😂 Martinez is better than Dias, Stone and Laporte. No point arguing with a cat. Enjoy the rats 🐀
Ay, you did my suggestion!
Can't wait for the tactical battle, City are flying with Erling! United had a long break, and rhythm ia not there. Number 9 video would be great! Can't wait
Dave, where did you get that t-shirt pal?!!?
good video
Please post Mc vs United match analysis
Make a video about Roberto De Zerbi
This game will be nice to watch .
IT WASSS!!!!!!!
Interested in number 9 video
This video needs a good 10 to 6 more minutes
Make a video about Sarri´s Napoli
4:43 "Mbappe, Lewandowski, Benzema, Kane, Vlahovic, Immobile, Mitrovic, and Haaland to name a few" Man slipped Mitrovic in there and hoped we wouldn't notice, Mitrovic is good but nowhere near the same level as the others mentioned 😂
And “To name a few” but named 8 😂
but tbf this season he scores goals
Time for Mitro to earn his flowers then
manchaster united now is stil not finish.. depends also on the current owner.. eth probably also want the total package. so youth should be in time incorporate quicker. its not only about transfers :)
This competition comes too early but it is good for their learning.
I see nothin but a win for United this Sunday.
United fan?
ETH loves backline forwarding
WE DEMAND THE RETURN OF THE NUMBER 9 VIDEO🤣PLEASE🥺
The real comparison, who has the shiniest bald head?
Return of the number 9, I wanna see that one
return of the #9 plz
That your last line there I don't agree with...Ten Hag will be building United to a Ten Hag team... whilst there are similarities between ETH and Pep teams...there are also very contrasting differences.
the only difference is man city is naive in defence .
Master and apprentice
They have the same hairstyle as well
Think we’re just gonna see United counter attack. Wouldn’t be surprised if they got the win. Ole era lives on for now.
Casemiro may start since he might provide solidity in midfield
I don't think dropping McTomminay when he's been on form of his life is wise move , Casemiro on the other hand still looks shaky in midfield . But I'll respect whatever Gaffer think is the best move , i mean we need something different to stop Haaland & City
Odds are against Us ! But I'll stay Quiet MUFC forever
Ten Hag has a thicker beard
Madness 🤣
How does that help matters? 😂😂😂😂😂😂.. Nice one
Boom
Battle of Blads
Hmmm. This is not how ETH wants to play. He wants to play possession football. Not Counter atk football. Correct me if i am wrong.
If I was ETH, I would press from the medium block and counter attack.
well at least their hair are similar
I always thought ten hag would be the guardiola replacement, can't happen now can it
Johans total football Holland style
It all comes down to quality of players which City has the upper hand💙
We need to stop them from playing their game... And frustrate them if possible
@@alusojr019yes lol if you are a city fan..
Pep has the advantage with Haarland on the pitch
Compare strikers of the world
If Manchester United want to win the game eth should just find one player to take care of de bruyne throughout the game
Casimero will do that
Ten hag doesn't have a lot to work with especially the midfield right now its not that good on the ball too much reliance on eriksen In the forward line there's too many guys who like playing on the last line and it looks disjointed at times when trying to build attacks
Tenhag has already made Manchester United a threatening team to many clubs in the world.
Not yet tho. don't get to conclusions too soon because they are still in a long term process
and what is the difference of them with Arteta?
Pep is sky. 10 Hag is earth.
Not exactly sure it's been a 'resurgence of number 9s'. After all, Lewandowski and Benzema are in their 30s and have been at it for years.
Benzema wasn't really at the forefront of the RM attack until relatively recently though tbf
Benzema is deffo false 9 before Cristiano left Madrid & Lewandowski prolly only one world class striker that been on top level game for quite awhile
Casimero just have to play
Man united got no striker who can put fear in defenders that's why teams try to go hard against united. United need to buy Joao Felix and maximin who makes defenders scared
All of my little lads think united will win 3-2, this is 100% a game Manchester United can win
Haland won't shine against United watch and see
United won't be built into Gadiola team that's an insult to us uinted fans. We will build and play into Eric ten Hag way
He was taught by Pep in Bayern
