NEVER Do These Things While Turkey Hunting!

Turkey season is coming up fast so it's time to shake the rust off our turkey calls, our turkey vest, and spend too much money on plastic and foam decoys. But all that calling, expensive decoys, fancy red dot on your designer turkey shotgun don't mean anything if you keep making these extremely common beginner turkey hunting mistakes.

  • For me the ratio of toms coming in silently versus those sounding off is about 1 in 3. When I was still a novice I actually had two separate occasions where I had a tom strutting and drumming just out of sight or behind me and I had no idea what it even was until I saw a tom do it in front of me.

  • The long beard my wife shot this year snuck in silent with his buddy and 3 snuck in on me. My group did gobble 600 yards away then got quiet, gobbled about 100 yards away then snuck in. Now Tom's we saw come down off the roost we're gobbling like crazy if a calm morning but if windy might gobble a couple of times then quiet and they would come in silent with the hens. Every day is different so just adjust and always be ready!! Good luck to all .

  • For sure, most of my birds have come in quietly or clucking loudly but not gobbling. Distanceto the roosted bird is variable. Certainly terrain is a big part but other factors are even more so in my opinion. Woods have greened up (lots of cover to conceal movement), rained and the forest floor is quiet or is extremely windy. All 3 of those will allow closing the distance on a roosted bird. If you are going for the in tight and personal, do it well before they begin gobbling.

  • I was once turkey hunting and heard the leaves rustle from my back left (strong side), but I couldn't see what was making the noise. I was certain it was a deer, so I didn't lift my gun. However, I was stupid enough to give a quick call. When I realized it was, in fact, a turkey, the bird was about 8 yards from me and looking directly at me while my gun sat on my lap. Why did I assume it was a deer? Why did I bother to call, but not get my shotgun in the ready position? The turkey didn't outsmart me, I outdumbed the turkey.

  • I made the mistake of making some yelps while not even being ready for a Tom to come in. It was very late that morning and I was packed up and walking back towards my vehicle. I stopped and made those yelps and got immediately cut off by a Gobble. And, it was extremely close! I tried to quickly find a spot to sit where I had some minimal cover but it was too late. That Tom was on me in a blink. Next thing I heard were Putts and he was out of there. Lesson learned. Be ready because you never know how close a bird might be and you may not have time to even sit and get your gun ready.

  • Youth & shotguns - My local NWTF Chapter learned early on (a couple decades ago) to be careful how shotguns are introduced to youth. True story/their first year - They had 10-12 youth (don't remember the exact number) practice shooting turkey targets at several shooting stations the night before their morning hunt. This was a "Learn to Hunt" event that was held the weekend before the youth hunt weekend. Most of those youth had a Tom called into range that weekend. No one pulled a trigger on a single Tom that weekend! Why? They had practiced with turkey loads, & they intimidated every single kid. They became afraid of the gun! This was a huge wake up call. They never did that again. Students are paired up to a gun that suits them better, and only light trap loads are used for practice. A turkey load isn't loaded until the actual hunt. They changed their approach ,& their success changed the following years since that time (many, many years ago!) Adults need to be careful. My much younger cousin had his young son shoot 3 Toms (3-years worth of youth hunts) with a .410 before he took his first Tom with a 20 gauge a couple weeks ago! With today's TSS loads, there's no reason to give a youth more than she or he may want to handle. Let them work their way up to a 20 gauge. Even then a 20 gauge gas-operated semi- auto may be the best for reducing recoil Not all kids are the same, & some handle this better than others. Don't get so wrapped up in the hunt & overlook the most important thing. It needs to be fun for them! How did your daughter's youth hunt go?

  • I don’t understand the obsession with using decoys and hunting field birds. Stay in the woods and call them in close and you won’t have to worry about 60 yard shots

  • A 410 with the proper load will slay a turkey easy. She'll feel comfortable shooting it too. Target low neck.
