    • I have to admit, I don't like this mod. I know this opinion is heretical, but I just can't get along with the campaign map. I really dislike the way the buildings work. I much preferred how it was in vanilla Attila. I would have preferred if they had just made the campaign gameplay the same as vanilla, but with a Medieval setting, factions and units. Anyway, great to see a review of a mod for Attila, my favourite TW game :-)

  • I really enjoyed this review, especially the faction overview section! You have the knowledge and temperament of a true historian! I love having historical videos / documentaries on in the background while I play TW games, it’s something I’ve always done oddly enough. Especially longer videos(such as this one)! I just booted up 1212ad, going to have another go a Kingdom of Castile campaign! My last campaign I ended up attempting to complete the reconquista way too hastily, and ended up getting obliterated by an almohad+marinid+Portuguese triumvirate within 40 turns lol. This time I will take a more diplomatic and safe approach. Oh and not declare war on Portugal lol. Thank you for this review! Keep up the great work!

  • Great review! Really like the historical context for the faction overview. How accurate do you recon the stated populations are for each faction? A quick Google search says the population of Europe was about 56 million around the year 1000. It seems like the sum of the populations for the factions in this game would fall quite a bit short of that.

  • Thank you Gudea for this great post. I’m very saddened however as Atilla TW has quit working for me for some time. There is currently a thread on Steam speaking about this issue at great length as countless users are unable to get this game to work or it’s mods like 1212AD. Many of us have tried the proposed solutions posted in the thread or online but nothing is working. At least on my end. Rumours are that the developers have quit their support for this game and this would be the reason for the fact that so many can no longer enjoy this title or it’s mods. Some people debate that it’s the mods themselves that make the game no longer playable. Which I find odd as I have deleted and reinstalled the game several times to no success… Would love to know your take on this if you have the time to look into it? I don’t want to throw CA into the fire pit just yet as I am not sure if they are responsible for this mess. Thank you for the feedback! Mash potatoes always taste great

  • I'm happy you had that disagreement with the historian because when you finally did review this mod out of guilt perhaps you did such an extensive review of the mod. also, they did update the game again, seems much more fleshed out would appreciate a play through/ update video or anything else related to this mod. You can extend building slots up to 10 slots. But it's more useful after the early game essentially when your already the strongest faction. I generally build food, port, sanitation and a guard house, I tend to stop playing before doing much more building slots, however my Abbasid campaign lasted ages and I used the heck out of them. But this issue is also apparent for technology, like I would like to build libraries to speed up research but I need my building slots for other things. Tech tree is way to long at the moment

  • I love playing as Zagwe and Merkuria as it takes real skill to go up through Muslim power to the north and get back into the mix of things. I wish I had better cavalry and more money of course. However if you are patient you can conquer north as the Muslim kingdoms become preoccupied with the Kingdom of Jerusalem. By the time they realize what is happening you can have Alexandria under your domination. Once that happens you become more secure in your position and your economy vastly improves. I also like the 1100 AD campaign for Rome II with the different mechanics.

    • @@GudeaTW So I just got the chance to talk to a 1212 dev about it and they said the one biggest problem is the fact that you can't recruit military order units or construct military order buildings as Eastern Christians. Apparently, the Hospitalers and Teutonic order had a fairly significant presence in Cilicia; and being Catholic (as they technically claimed to convert to so to get support from Europe), they can build military order buildings to recruit crusading units. Hopefully, someone can make a submod that starts the faction out as Eastern Christian.

  • I wouldnt consider it medieval 3, but its for sure a good QoL update for people that love medieval 2 but hate the UI, AI, old style graphics. its a great alternative for those that really love the style of the era, but dislike the jank of old. Though playing this just makes you drool over the thought of a medieval 3 on the newer engine, as three kingdoms is absolutely stunning minus all its flaws. I think of it more of a medieval 2.5 rather than a 3, expecting modders to make a full game within a game is just unfair to them tbh, especially one of this scale and not just adding some new units/buildings/stat changes. Great review though, your voice was easy to listen to, and you obviously know a lot about the era. Which is another thing, i think since you know SO much about the era, when you see something off it irks you, I know very little about the era, but i love the style, the art, the types of weapons, so when something is off, tbh i dont notice it, because i dont know the subject, i just like to play games.

  • 33:16 Actually Georgia acquiring Armenian territories was some sort of reconquista. Prior to Seljuk invasion Armenian lands were ruled by Bagratunis and Georgian dynasty of Bagrationi was closely related to them. In short, idea of taking major Armenian cities was liberation and then legitimacy to rule came from dynastical ties with Armenian lands plus Christianity after several decades of Muslim rule. Also to give a little bit of insight, "Golden Age" played negative factor in the battle against Khwarezmians because by that time there were several distinct factions in Georgian kingdom fighting for influence. Already well established Armeno-Kurdish Zakarids were contested by emerging Georgian house of Akhaltsikhe. Zakarids were commanders in chief of Georgian army for decades already while Akhaltsikhe guys led vanguard in later times. When the vanguard clashed with Khwarezmians in the battle Zakarid commander didn't send any reinforcement from main army and left the battlefield without a fight. After the defeat (in Armenian territory) everyone went to their castles with sizable armies to hide and left the country defenseless so Khwarezmian army freely besieged Georgian capital and sacked it. Key factor in this situation was also weak female ruler who could not really control nobles anymore and couldn't gather forces. Giorgi died of wounds after several clashes with initial Mongol expeditionary forces led by Jebe and Subutai and being without a legitimate heir throne went to his sister.

  • This mod is stunning on first glance. The "wow" factor of playing 1212 guarantees a positive first impression. Then there's that general desperation among many historical fans 16 years later for that Medieval 3 they've been denied. I think those two factors have a blinding effect on many who play this mod's campaign. I'd like to add some food for thought, because I think it's odd that you call the mod a masterpiece when there's so many objectively broken things in it. Agents that can't perform actions. Islamic factions that can't stabilize income, public order, and santitation due to poorly balanced buildings. The all-walled cities change simply doesn't work, it makes the campaign way too easy because the AI is terrible at attacking walls and will hardly ever attack you. And there's the poor campaign pacing. Attila is 4 turns per year yet 1212 is 2 turns per year, but isn't balanced for 2 so governors die too fast and provinces become unmanagable without mass-converting enemy priests, which because of 2 turns per year now die of old age as fast as you can replace them with new converts. This makes empire management in 1212 very tedious and repetitive. Or you can stabilize your cities with new buildings unlocked after dozens of turns of research. Except each tech takes 10 or 20 turns to research, which is simply the mod wasting your time with padding because of how few techs there are, so research often feels like a waste of time because it takes so long to get to anything worthwhile. I could forgive some of these issues since it's a mod but they've all been around since the mod first released in 2019 and there are no signs that any of it will ever be fixed. Another reason I have a hard time forgiving these problems is that many of the broken things aren't new features added by 1212, they are default features of Attila that work fine in the vanilla campaign but 1212 broke, and still hasn't fixed over 2 years later. And sometimes it *is* the 1212 features that break. No mention in the video that the HRE elector script randomly breaks around turn 150 much of the time, which is one of the most commonly reported issues with the campaign on the Discord. There's so much wrong with this mod and I find it unfortunate that review like this one can spend 90 minutes glossing over all those glaring campaign problems just because they are enthralled by the mediecal aesthetic they've been waiting 16 years for in a TW game. I know this is not the best use of my time but if I can save someone a few hours of their life and 30 dollars from their wallet because they saw this video and decided to buy Attila for 1212, then I think my time was not wasted. Maybe one day the mod will be the masterpiece you say it is, the potential is there, but it is absolutely not there yet.

    • I agree with a lot of your points! It is fun, but it definitely isn't there yet, and due to engine limitations it may never get there. And as I say in the video, I have seen certain members of the team be very non-receptive to constructive, polite criticism

  • All I know is that a slight remaster of M2TW consisting only of some campaign innacuracy fixes, a faction limit removal + a crash to desktop on mods and vanilla fix plus may be also some bug fixes) will be by far the best Total War game ever. They shouldn't even touch the graphics, they're perfect. Modders will take care of the rest.

  • It's one of the best mods for Total War: Attila in my opinion. In terms of factions though I was kind of disappointed that they added so many but refused to include some cultures like the Irish and Welsh, but instead gave us several almost identical Byzantine factions to play as. I would have a preferred an Irish faction with unique Gaelic units instead of three Eastern Roman ones with identical units. With that said, I agree it's a masterpiece as you said - one of the most impressive Total War mods ever created.
