The Canon R3 (sdp.io/r3) is the new full-frame sports camera, shooting 30 frames per second with eye-tracking autofocus and 6k video! It's AMAZING, but Tony Northrup dug into the capabilities and found one SERIOUS weakness that means it doesn't compare as well as we thought against the Canon R5, the Sony a9 II, or the Sony a1.
Tony discusses the FPS, autofocus/AF capabilities, flip screen, video capabilities, sensor stabilization, and more!

  • First, I am not a canon ambassador. Second, I had a "pre-production" camera in my hands. At no point did Canon tell me I can or can't say something about the camera, positive or negative. In fact, Canon was not even here when I was making my final video based off of using 2 cameras in the real world. Canon does not get to preview my video before it goes live and had zero say in any of the content. If I find a flaw, I'm going to share it. All Canon did was bring us the cameras and answer any questions we had.

    • I believe you Jared. You are my favorite reviewer. I remember you saying "I call bullshit" on the review of the R3. I have an R5 and I honestly don't see the point of buying an R3. The R5 does everything better, except for the 30fps which apparently are not really 30 fps. I also call Canon bullshit. This cannot compit with either the R5 or the Sony A1

  • Tony, as one of the reviewers who had access to the camera I wanted to comment. At no point did Canon tell me what I could and couldn't say about the R3. The only caveat they wanted me to mention was that it was a pre-production model, that's it. If you watch my R3 videos, you'll know I published a great deal of results including overheating tests, burst timings, rolling shutter and closeups of resolution charts and high ISO samples. And YES it DOES have GPS, I tested it and showed it in my videos. If you haven't got the body yourself, please do watch them as I cover a lot in there that wasn't included in other videos so far, both positive and negative.

  • A little late to the party but I watched both Jared and Gordon's videos who are not Canon ambassadors and from what I have watched, all that I could tell was they were given pre-production cameras and the deal was not to release their videos until the embargo has been lifted. Much like what Sony has done for the A7s III, A7c, and A1. Both reviewers voiced out what they could with the limited time they had and emphasized on the "pre-production" part and are willing to take another look at the camera once they are able to secure full production units. Jared noted how the rolling shutter performance wasn't as good as the A1 and the buffer cleared much slower than the 1DX mkIII. It seems like Canon isn't just relying on their ambassadors with pre production cameras and is now also allowing independent content creators to make their own videos about the camera which I actually think is a good thing on their part after the PR nightmare of the R5/R6 release. I think it's also worth noting that these pre-production cameras could have been part of the same batch of cameras that were being used at the Tokyo Olympics, so not everyone can have/has access to these pre-production samples.

  • Years ago I had the Canon EOS 5 film camera - that had an eye-controlled focus feature. The viewfinder was divided into 5 approximately equal vertical strips and you looked at an element in each one to get the camera to focus on that segment. It worked ok, but I didn't find it that useful in reality. I usually enjoy your reviews, but this one had an air of sour grapes about it. Frankly, I'd rather hear about a camera's good points from a potentially biased ambassador who actually has one in their hands. I expect that most people considering spending several thousands on a camera will be savvy enough to take all reviews with a pinch of salt. As an R5 owner, I know for example that to achieve the headline maximum frame rates, several conditions need to be met, including factors such as the level of battery charge remaining and the Wi FI not being connected, so to highlight that the R3 does not always achieve the max frame rate without discussing whether the listed conditions were being met is rather disingenuous on your part.

I've seen no reference in the official Canon R3 specs and press releases regarding GPS, except to support showing location info at playback. Fingers crossed the R3 has integrated GPS, but I suspect will need to settle add-on GPS module similar to the R5/6. Hope to be wrong. In general, I'd like to see camera manufacturers get back to integrated GPS. It's naive for manufacturers to think smartphone tethering is a viable alternative to integrated GPS function, even if they managed make it work reliably -- which they haven't, even after all these years trying.

  • I agreed with your technical review and comparison with the R5 and competitors' cameras with one major exception. I shoot mainly wildlife and have shot with both the R5 and 1Dx cameras. The ability to shoot action in low light is an essential aspect of wildlife photography, having shot at ISO's in excess of 20,000 on many occasions that warrant this - Kenya, early/late afternoon light.... The lower resolution of the 1DX is perfect for this since the larger pixels in the sensor keep noise under control much better than the higher MP R5 sensor. In good light the R5 will outperform the R3 in many aspects - however in poor light the R5 will simply be unable to shoot wildlife since high ISO performance is nowhere close to the R3.

  • BTW Tony, perhaps you forget to mention that 30 fps will be restricted when AF is set to One-shot priority is set to Focus inside the AF Menu. Set for Release, and the FPS doesn't care if the image is in focus. When set to Focus Priority, then much depends on lighting, subject, lens type, f/stop, and just wear and tear. With mirrored DSLRs, there is a momentary blank in focus registering when the mirror flips open for the shutter opening, though the camera will retain the last focus registration until the focus sensor can update the target of the image for the next cycle.

On the R3 the electronic shutter is going to be good in pretty much any light and for all subjects. The R5/6 are quite prone to banding and rolling shutter in silent mode. Granted, it's a not an easy business decision to drop nearly 3x the money for just that.

  • I would say that - generally - adding fancy tracking possibilities require more and more computations and thus a faster CPU. They can easily put more power into their processors but that makes the camera hotter and hotter. This could limit camera makers to only make the processors faster when they can get a generational processor improvement on thermals - this often requires the manufacturers to make they chips a smaller and smaller nanometer or inventions in the materials used. Potentially this could mean that the real world frames per second you get could slow down the fancier AF tracking the camera uses as another bottleneck along with the lenses. Might be worth testing? How long does it take to overheat a camera like this with the best AF possible compared to turning it off and going manual or just regular oldschool AF. Just a few thoughts.

    @EmoEmu@EmoEmu2 жыл бұрын
    • The subject identification, tracking and actual AF are very unlikely to overheat the camera CPUs, you might be surprised with the low amount of actual data that is processed to identify and track a subject. Target aquisition and tracking is a very old military technology which already ran on 60 year old computers stuffed into missiles. The software and hardware has vastly improved since then. What is likely to cause overheat is recording high resolution video at a high frame rate and processing the video at the same time, ie processing vast amount of data in a short period of time. The best way to handle this are more efficient processors, meaning specialized processors for instance for video recording and encoding. Regarding the actual AF speed, the bottleneck is the mechanical lens in front of the camera. Regardless of how fast the camera can determine the distance to the subject and tries to focus, it always has to wait for the lens which is slower by several orders of magnitude. This also means that cameras will be limited by the lenses in regards to frame rate, if the lenses focussing system cannot keep up with the cameras commands to refocus several times within a second then you either have to live with mostly out of focus shots or you have to drop frame rate to the focussing speed of the lense to get in focus shots and reduce the risk of damaging the lens.

  • One thing about the disappointment about apps that can do live stuff like insta, Facebook, etc. Even if your camera can do livestreaming, are modern wifi / mobile connections able to do 4k streaming? Are the abilities of your lenses able to translate well into a lower resolution stream? The only thing I can see a use for this is if you want to Livestream something with like a telephoto lens like following animals or your neighbors or something, otherwise I don't see how it would be a priority until 6g or some wifi improvement happens where the cameras are able to show off their capabilities in 4k or higher

  • Little issue but big consequences. The 1Dx III can shoot 20 mechanical FPS in live view or with the e shutter. So that is a pretty big deal for the 1Dx III. Plus it does depend a lot if you are using a very fast focusing lens like the 70-200mm f/2.8 III and it's not racking the focus a lot. It can pretty much hit the max frame rate. Image bird diving into the water and it is not moving towards you much. So the AF is not really slowing you down much if at all. But I do really like your review a LOT overall and just reinforces why I want to compare side by side these two bodies.

Unless that changes, GPS is not an option for me, as I would have to manually change the location anyway. I think firmware could to that in theory. If the camera know its location, the direction it is pointed to and the focus distance, it should be able to calculate the location of the subject.
