When Aretha Franklin passed away I flew all the way from Italy to be there. I had to say goodbye to the queen in person. I remember seeing her granddaughter that week with the family on numerous occasions. Hey American Idol, here’s a thought: why not have a certified vocal coach [*cough cough* Cheryl Porter] on the judge’s panel? Someone who’s an expert in the field of voice as an instrument? Makes sense to me. Makes sense to a lot of us!
Because they aren’t looking for the most skillful, technical singers. They are looking for a success story that they can turn into a Hollywood star. They don’t need Cheryl for that.

@@TomiaMacQueen I can maybe possibly see her being asked to be an advisor for the battle rounds of The Voice. Although the likelihood of that is still very slim because of status. I don’t think she stands as qualified to be a full on The Voice Coach relating to the complete shows past and current roster of Coaches as a whole. The Voice Coaches are celebrity award winning artists who have constantly been at the top of music charts. Coaches write and produce globally praised music. They make hits. Cheryl is a well known, very trusted vocal coach. She has even trained social media stars like james charles. I think she should have a show that is not a singing competition but a documentation of her students growth. That way her personality and kindness will shine.

When I first saw this audition I thought, this girl needs Cheryl. Not only because you'd help bring that voice to it's full potential but because you're sunshine in human form and given the vultures in the entertainment industry she could use that sunshine and safe place. I almost wish she didn't say Aretha was her grandma, the expectations went so high. Aretha was a powerhouse and they're huge shoes to fill when you're only 15. Go get her Mama Cheryl and wrap those wings around her until she's ready to fly 💞

I took voice lessons in high school. I thought I was “ALL THAT” I never practiced. It was a huge wake up call when my voice teacher threatened to drop me! She had a waiting list and didn’t need to waste her talent on me. I buckled down after that and couldn’t believe how much better and stronger I became as a singer. This girl needed the same. She’s going to be amazing 🤩

Lionel was 100% right and so are you!!! She has so much potential, but she just needs someone like you to help her get there. Lionel was seeing things Katy couldn't see. I would hate to see her get in this competition when she's not emotionally ready either. Competitions are tough and she seems so shy and sweet. But she definitely has a really nice voice.
I so appreciate how honest you are with your students. It’s not mean-spirited at all! It’s a protection! The public is ruthless!! So many singers get told how good they are, but the truth is many of them need work. It takes a lot of work to be really good technically even if you have an amazing, talented voice. her voice itself just sounds super young, and I'm sure anyone that's been singing since 15 is super aware of how much change to the voice happens even within one or two years. i can only imagine how much this experience inspired her and will only inspire her to work extra hard and come back to absolutely knock their socks off next time, very excited to hear where grace goes with that voice!

You can see lionel is a true legend....why take the leap and if you fail you get scared for life when instead you can just be patient and when your time is right you bloom so well that yu become the best.....especially knowing that her grandma had high reputation....that will put huge expectations on her at such a young age well done lionel....cheryl you the best

They could’ve said yes due to the fact that she is granddaughter of a legend. I think Katy couldn’t say no because of Aretha’s legacy. That’s why I admire Lionel even more for being honest, without being rude or demotivating. She could have wasted a shot. I, too, inquired about her services a year or so ago, for my daughter, but no answer😔 my daughter is an amazing singer with a powerful voice, so I found her a vocal coach here in Austin whom also majored in Opera. My daughter is 14 now, but when she is an adult, she will be a force to reckoned with. Peace and blessings
I agree that Luke and Lionel made the right call, and Lionel did it in a way that was humane and honest. However, you can tell that 3 nos would have devastated her. I'm glad she had Katy to believe in her and boost her confidence, and the other two to protect her from getting crushed. And with some loving coaching (would be great if with Cheryl) I think she will come back ready to crush it.
At the end of the day she is young and is related to the most legendary female singer of all time. She’ll end up singing professionally, if she really wants to. Let’s be very real!

I said at the beginning of her audition that she has a lovely voice, but she is just not ready...YET...and that she needs more practice and work! I also agreed that I didn't know why Luke said that about her runs and riffs, because they were definitely not clean enough and missed some of the notes. This young lady is precious! I loved her! She just needs some work, some practice, and most importantly, some CONFIDENCE...which I KNOW you, Mama Cheryl, will help her find! ❤❤❤❤❤

listening closely..you can hear all the potential. Aretha's voice was many things, one being a beautiful reflection of the challenges of her time. Remember the wisdom in ..first you learn to use your voice as an instrument and then you have that journey when you no longer need to try to sound like anyone else to feel "am I good?" because you found your "own" voice and use it to express with passion, what you have experienced in life. I agree completely with Cheryl oh yes. If she listens to her as advice she would both be talented and wise. 🙏

I appreciate this so much. Too many people are starting to think that it's only either just brutal honesty or coddling encouragement when there is a great middle area right there of nurturing honesty. That actual constructive criticism that isn't filling you with delusion or false hope but keeps you motivated while keeping you well grounded. I know as a sensitive person, I have difficulty accepting comments and criticism - especially with an aggressive tone, I get really defensive. But if delivered with the compassion and kindness as Ms Cheryl Porter, I would really strive to not let her down. I have battled with a "be perfect/amazing at something or be nothing at all" mentality growing up and that has kept me from further pursuing anything I liked as a child and that included singing. I absolutely adore teachers like her who help their students avoid and heal from this mentality.

I really hope you were able to work with her. You can tell she's lacking confidence and I've personally never seen a vocal coach of any caliber who has a more inspirational soul than you. By that I mean you are so incredibly supportive without giving false compliments, etc in a way that inspires confidence and pride in the people you work with. I love how you can be so honest without ever making the person feel like they're being knocked down. You only seem to make them feel better and better about themselves even when giving constructive criticism. If only we could all have someone so wonderful touch our lives ❤

I completely agree with Lionel richee. He has so much compassion respect n love for the Godmother Aretha Franklin that he gave his honest and loving testimony on what she can handle right now. Made me love him even more. He did right by her. U can tell Aretha was there in the room.
