My Jetta TDI used to get crazy-high intake air temperature. Stop-n-go driving in Florida in the summer will do that. I hooked up a scanguage, and could see the intercooler heat-soaking. Sometimes the intake air temperature would reach 80*C! And the engine would get unhappy. So I added an electric fan to the intercooler, with a temperature switch. I set the switch to activate at 50*C. That fixed the problem. The intercooler doesn't heat-soak anymore. And the engine is happy.
Where you been!?
Had to take a break from youtube. Working 2 jobs doesn't leave much free time.
I feel you... I work one teaching job, but my two young daughters make sure I feel doubly employed, haha. Glad you are alright and look forward to when/if you upload again! Not sure where you are in FL, but I hope the storm spared you! Cheers!@@michaelblacktree
Thanks for the kind words. Thankfully, we only got a glancing blow from Idalia. I have some video that's been sitting on the hard drive for a month now. But I haven't had time to do the editing.
The sense of pride you must have driving that car is well deserved. To build something so special with your own brain and hands is not something that many can achieve. Well done bro
I thought the exact same thing, I feel happy vicariously.
It must be a magnificent feeling being able to finally drive your car this way! Congratulations! 👏 Thank you for letting us being part of your journey, such a joy to watch! 🙏
Water to air may suit your application in a hot climate for the intercooler, unless you insist on staying air to air and roof mounting it.
Little ductwork, to aid the flow.

Fun fact: 15.3 is the same number whether you talking mpg or liters/100km. (Same as -40 degrees for C vs. F.)😊 If l/100km goes to half, mpg doubles... 5.1l/100km is 46 mpg, etc.

That is some amount of power in a car that’s the size of my shoe! You’ve done an incredible job with it so far.
Real talk your home is beautiful! Everytime you go through the tunnel and then come out with the mtns in the back ground is just beautiful!
🎉 Love seeing these updates! Living the dream man! I found your channel a couple years ago and have learned SO much from your videos, so cool to see how far this project has come! It's so clear in your speech how great this accomplishment feels for you, and as a viewer it's so cool to see that. You're an inspiration, congrats! 🎉
Thank you so much!
That is good news, sir! Glad to hear she’s holding together. She sounds great, too! I get about 15mpg in my MKII MR2 Turbo, as well.
Am addicted to this channel, love from kenya, east Africa, now I want to turbo my Toyota 4AFE
Yay for project Underdog. We'll done and thanks for the update.
Cars now are crazy cause now I build late model civic type R and I get 24-26 mpg out of a 600whp car. I saw your afr. 11.0 is a bit rich. You would actually be losing power when running that rich. An 11.5 would still be very safe and could make more power. Also adding more fuel doesn’t equal more ignition timing as that’s a myth. Only when your running excessively lean.
11.0 is way more than a bit rich. Its not a big cam or high compression engine, 1bar boost should still be around 12.8-13.5 even leaner would still be safe just off the power curve, no reason to be dumping fuel for cooling at that pressure unless all you can get is like 87oct sams club gas forcing timing out of it. Those 4a/7a engines are also happy to cruise at 15-16:1 if you put enough low load timing in, easy 40mpg if your following traffic laws. early 90's lean burn was like this till the epa came down on nox emissions, now everything since 96/97 runs way rich at cruise loads. I really don't gather that dude at all comprehends that if its rich timing has to come out, lean it will will need to be advanced, or the relation of timing to egt & turbo spool.
so glad to hear it going in right direction 💪🏻💪🏻 i’ve also after 4 years just finished a full race spec fully forged 944 turbo engine build with many mods stand alone and most important a lorry diesel holset hx35 twinscroll and turbo back full exhaust system ,.. all done myself in my single tight garage ,.. and i’m also like you feel beginning to love it …. i had major prob with my turbo drain also as it drains into the oil in the sump and not above oil level on these and on gear change i was getting oil puff of smoke where the vacume scavenging disappeared as i removed the old afm system ect ( long story) have fixed this now through hard work and many many trial and errors in regulating amount of oil going to the turbo feed and midyfying my AOS system to breath out the crank preasure look forward to the next one 👍🏻👍🏻 all the best Daniel
I don't care if the update is erratic-you're awesome.
😍😍😍😍👍
next thing on the list: some fiberglas bodypannels to deal with the missing airflow into the enginebay
Great to see you enjoy the car! Bit of finesse work to go from the sounds of things, but keep at it! Air to water intercooler gets my vote for a solution, as I've gone this route on my AW11 project. Pretty sure you've seen that on my instagram or youtube 'channel'. A fan on the intercooler in the interim would help. Getting the air temp sensor mounted up stream in the airflow will also help. Another oddball solution that'd help is a phenolic spacer on the intake manifold. That would help keep excess heat from the head from migrating up into the intake manifold.
Time to upgrade to water 2 air intercooling. Youve got power still left on the table. For the intercooler coolant heat xchanger, you can try mounting it in a box at 45 degrees and running a duct in and out. Kinda like an oem air filter, but put your radiator in the box instead of an air filter. Try to get ram air to feed the box through ducting. Use a duct fan like a 3 inch 12v bilge blower in the exhaust side to pull air through the radiator in absense of ram air. Great project and a unique car compared to the meta.
Amazing video! I can't wait to see how well u complete the build and fine tune it!
Awesome work. It's so good to see your enthusiasm and see you enjoy the car so much. Looking forward to the next installment. Oh yeah! And that was some very impressive driving round those sweeping bends!

I’d recommend doing a video about Car Clutches vs. Torque Converters. It should clear some things up for some of us
What a nice sound it makes :) Sometimes listening to you makes me think I am pushing my K20 too far. 24 PSI of boost and IAT runs about 45-50 C and I felt "that is too hot". Hearing 60-70C I am feeling great now.
And what about the mpg?
Great stuff again. Having similar problems with IAT's with 13psi. Should have them resolved soon. 'Cool' is my new mantra! Keep up the brilliant vids 👍

I'm glad I got to test drive one. I was interested in the twin-turbo variant in the showroom, but the salesman went with me for a ride in this generation. I preferred the handling of my MGB and the price was paid for.
Well done!
Project Underdog is awesome. You should look into a drip tank for the turbo, it helped me with low mounted turbos.
almost got a perfect 15.3mpg = 15.3l/100km 😂
TIL 15.3 is the -40° of fuel economy
having a 3s fe on some of my engines, watching the progress in your project makes me wanna turbo it, use the engine while was in the car and it was awful slow and consume much more than a celica turbo so glad to see you this happy with your build, only thing related to it, was when you drive, notice that you put your elbow on the door while pull, it is not the best of the ideas since part of your back losses feel while you support the door, on the same limit that you were talking about pushing the car and its limits take care and hope see more updates
It (still) runs! 🎉🎉🎉
hey man i love ur videos amazing stuff keep it up was wondering if you could do a video explaining rear mounted tubro how it works pros and cons, and different variations like intercooler or no intercooler and how it would affect lag. thank you
Whoa man!!! Easy, do not hurt yourself, please! We all need you.
Thanks D4A
Really nice, what you have achieved! As I am form Düsseldorf/Germany and new to this channel, in which citiy are you located? These roads look like real fun to drive!
Glad to see (and hear) it running so well! I think that a water/methanol injection system would help it run a little cooler and maybe help the efficiency.
Good work... You now have a relly cool car.
Hey, could you do a series like Iconic Engines but for diesel engines - Like VW's 1.9tdi, Mercedes's OM606, Volvos D5? It would be great to hear your perspective on them and their tuning potential because there aren't a lot of videos explaining diesel tuning but more of what it's like to do it. That is if you want to, of course. Your videos are great and have helped me a lot in learning about engines and cars in general!
What a cool build! That is impressive fuel economy for 1 bar of boost and power! I know you know this, but the most important factor of handling is the tires.
Simple ducting from in front of the drivers side rear wheel, and making sure positive pressure from the engine bay can exit freely, the standard mr2 rear spoiler is too small to create any real negative pressure behind it.
Your IAT sensor appears to be in the intake plenum. Big nono as temperature is affected by density and when you have the throttle shut it can register different temperatures due to pressure drop. Put it inline just before the throttle body for better results.
Hey man I love your content and have been following your build since I've gotten my aw11. Just curious what your cars weigh is around with the turbo setup? Thanks!
It's about time I say I have enjoyed many of your videos while trying to ensure I have a good understanding of my own projects, pretty sure I may have learned something along the way too. I also think the little 4AGE is great and really appreciate your project. (4AGE head/inlet development seemed to be in total parallel with CA18DET with various butterflies/pipework from 1985-1989, 12 inlet runners, then 8, then finally 4) What are your current spec and plans, the project underdog videos span a long time and I don't want to have to watch them all in order to figure it out :) Are you still testing the cheap GT28 for results before swapping to Garrett (GTX gen2?) turbo to compare? The JK Fab video you referenced in your Maxpeeding GT28 video is, I think, one of our UK 200SX owners who (re)builds turbos. I'm considering changing my old-tech GT2871R (0.64, "52-trim") on my Nissan CA18DET engine for a GTX2860 gen2 or G25-550 and maybe going back to the standard exhaust manifold (OK for this power), all for better spool and more torque lower down as I'm limited by standard rods (350bhp and 300+ft-lbs at 4400-6100rpm) but I can probably push the rods and turbo to 380bhp. I'm rebuilding two spare cylinder heads with larger exhaust valves and gasflowing these myself, the inlet manifold, plenum and TB, so maybe it would be opportune to upgrade the rods. The engine was fully rebuilt with forged pistons and metal head gasket 15 years ago but has not been used much for 10 years. A full head build, new gaskets, new turbo and remap would be quite an investment! Would like to know your thoughts. I'm not sure I really need to change the head or turbo, I enjoy the projects... but not the expense. And, to be honest, it is pretty savage as it is in a 1150kg car with aftermarket long/close gear ratios, I think it would be better to have a smoother, earlier and less violent surge of torque! (150->300ft-lbs from 3500->4400rpm) although I must admit this surge is very addictive and could be faster but less enjoyable with better torque earlier? I have considered longer inlet runners and different cams. Maybe I should save the better engine build project for a kit car in the future, a Fisher Fury with up to 360bhp at different boost settings :D One last Question. What compression ratio are you using now the 4AGE is built, just curious as to how high you dared to go? I'm no expert, but I wonder whether your dump valve is leaking as I'm hearing a lot of "whoosh" as the boost builds even before you close the throttle, might be worth investigating. Bailey DV30 recirculating is great with 22psi and aluminium pipes :D
Careful finding out handling limits cliffside. Midengine cars loose their grip all at once
Good!
Install AEM water methanol injection kit, I’m sure it will definitely help your intake temp. Also get some smoke leak boost tester, it would make your life so much easier to find leaks everywhere (radiator system, vacuum lines, boost pipes)
Ah!! I must come to Sarajevo and open up a dyno shop!!

Has been great watching the progress videos. I haven’t noticed you mention what oil feed size hike your running ? Is 3mm suitable for the turbo ! Also is 1bar boost the stock spring that comes with it ? I’ve got 1 also for my turbo build but the one with the billet turbine wheels. Keep up the good work 👍
I have an SW20 Turbo with some of the same issues, haha. Intake temps are a bummer for sure. About your power level and turbo size though; Maybe consider going to something like a TD04HL-19T#7. That thing would spool up and give your full torque much, much earlier (=wider powerband, as you know of course) ~300bhp.
The city reminds me of Greece. Can't say if it looks more like Athena or Thessaloniki, but Athena is more compact. Hm. In the later part of the video or reminds me of Italy or Montenegro. Anyway lovely landscape!
When hot you just need to add some fuel with the iat correction, at least that's what I saw in my case. Low load like 3-5% more, high load, in boost 3-5% less fuel at hot temperature
maybe a scoop to funnel air into the bonnet, front engine is easier to blow air over the intercooler but harder on a mid engine
i had the same jerking problem when revving the car from idle when its hot. either VE table in that area is not tuned properly or acceleration enrichment is too brutal (i was using tunerstudio with an arduino ecu term might be different for yours)
Get a water methanol injection. I have 1 on my car and it is absolutely amazing! Even when it's stupid hot out, under boost, IAT is well below ambient!
My biggest issue with my engine is my oil drain and water lines, i can get a 4an fitting that clamps over coolant pipes with a hole drilled (not keen lol)
when will we see another iconic engine video?
Wow!!! Just discovered your MR2 series and couldn't have found it at a better time. Just scored an 87' MR2 AW11 N/A auto here in the U.S. that I've seen parked for years for a couple hundred buks. All the practical knowledge you're passing on is amazing! Instantly subscribed! Btw also happen to own an 94' Audi UrS4 that I want to upgrade to an Apikol intercooler. Will the OEM one be suitable for an MR2 turbo build? What OEM turbos do you recommend that could be potentially harvested from a JDM- i.e. FD13B or 4g63?
Is this an MR2? Maybe you could make a sort of hood scoop with an electric fan or two in order to get the intercooler temps down?
sretno :)
Highway mpg would you nbr aroumd 26mpg? Normally they get about 30-40mpg but 40 would be driving a place without hills/mountain to drive i'd assume. 30-33 would be my guess without turbo, so that makes me as if 26mpg would be highway and 20 city if you do push it everywhere. With rhe issues fix i would think you get another 1 or 2 while driving in Mexico.
I have an AWD car that’s a bit front heavy (60/40 weight split) and of course understeers. I’ve done a larger rear swaybar, some coilovers, and adjusted tire pressures a bit. This helps it feel very neutral. I’m thinking my next steps are to add a rear LSD, and a controller to lock the AWD system engaged. It’s 50/50 power split front and rear when locked, and I’m hoping adding the LSD will do similar as it has for you. Let me control the rear not just by lifting the throttle as I can now, but by pressing it too, and making very safe, controlled, predictable rear end step out. Good luck sorting out the rest of the build! Perhaps more focused ducting for your intercooler, and some exhaust and turbine heat shielding, can help your IAT’s some.

I'm really interested in the aero and how u will solve the issue with temp
MPG seems low my modded 93 Thunderbird SC gets 17mpg city. With a bigger V6 and a roots blower, and automatic trans, in a much heavier car and at least 50% more HP and more than twice the torque.
Nice car! If one bar boost equals double power, maybe you engine originally got 30.8 mpg.
PUT A ELTRICK FAN ON THE INTER COOLER.... go project under dog up and running whoo hooo!!!... on a hot day my iat doesn't exceed 120 degrees f with a huge front mount inter cooler
Break in on a new engine is apparently 1000 miles of easy driving. My last Camaro motor got to 400 miles then bent two push rods lol. Then I found out that engine needed self aligning rockers, not old school standard rockers.
Break in on any engine is done and over in the first 5 minutes, after that the fresh hone in the cylinders is wore away and the rings are as seated as they are ever going to get, 10-20min in and the bore is glazed. Nothing else in an engine should be making metal to metal contact. Things that do like lifters/rockers are hardened polished surfaces, they do not wear unless things have gone really really wrong. Weather seating the rings should be done at an easy load or a high load is totally dependent on the size and type of rings, no silver bullet there. The 500-1000mi myth is more of a shakedown period, finding out something is leaking and it over heats or has a loss of oil pressure at a low load/rpm would probably just be a matter of repairing whatever was leaking without causing serious internal damage, its got nothing to do with breaking anything in. 1000mi would be like 15-25 hours, many race engines are never intended to even run a 1/4 of that yet they are fully expected to perform at 100% for the time they are run and remain in a serviceable condition when tore down for refresh.
ah the turbo vs. heat load constant. That motor is not getting alot of airflow where it is at, will be interesting to see how you adapt it. As well as the current stuff that is not optimal. MR2 are pretty sweet for sure. 15MPG wow that's pretty low it seems to me but you must be flogging it all the time. Should be much better at lower RPM
Oh can U get a snorkel for the intercooler that may help engine temps and twin thermos my man even put a thermo fan on the cooler with water spray
How many kms per tank of fuel do you get ?
Why not run in open loop below a certain RPM and manifold pressure so you aren't having your o2 sensor play tricks on you due to low exhaust flow air leaks or tailpipe reversion
I have a Mk1 with a 20 valve 4AGE and I've never gotten less than 30 MPG. Lots less HP than yours though. Still more fun than the stock 16 valve.
That jerk you explain, i use to get that on my Punto GT turbo it turned out to be the butterfly getting stuck and suddenly opening as the tension grew on the cable, could this be same for you.
Very plausible! Thank you for the tip

A floating ball valve can be used to prevent the oil from flowing back when the engine is at a standstill. This is characterised by the fact that the inserted ball floats in the oil and thus works without spring pressure and thus without counterpressure.
