Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez successfully defended his world titles by dropping Jermell Charlo on his way to a dominant unanimous decision (119-109, 118-109 twice) in the SHOWTIME PPV main event Saturday night from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Canelo Promotions presented the Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view.
“I’m a strong fighter all the time, against all the fighters,” said Canelo. “I’m a strong man. Nobody can beat this Canelo.”
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) was dominant from start to finish, using the masterful ring IQ and sublime power that’s made him a future Hall of Famer to flummox the junior middleweight king Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs). Moving up two weight classes in an attempt to reign in two divisions, Charlo was able to occasionally land flush but was met with a wall of resistance from Canelo.
“I just felt like I wasn’t me in there,” said Charlo. “I don’t make excuses for myself, so it is what it is. I take my punches and roll with it. It’s boxing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”
Charlo’s defense first showed cracks in the early rounds when Canelo’s signature power hooks to the body had a clear effect on him and forced him to focus largely on defense in the first half of the fight. In round seven, Canelo broke through with a looping overhand right that stunned Charlo and forced him to take a knee.
“Truthfully, I could feel the difference in the weight,” said Charlo. “I picked up 14 pounds. I am undisputed in my weight division. You fall short sometimes, but you just have to keep on pushing. My roll don’t stop right here. I’m proud of myself. He hit me with some hard shots. I thought I got mine off. I’m the little Charlo and I represent that.”
The rest of the seventh round saw Charlo fight intelligently, and even land some of his cleanest shots to make it to the bell. Charlo initially showed more urgency but was unable to deter the surgical precision of Canelo’s offense and defense. Canelo dominated the CompuBox stats as well as the scorecards, owning a 134 to 71 advantage in total punches landed, including an impressive 42 body shots.
“We worked on attacking the body,” said Canelo. “We know he’s a great fighter. He knows how to move in the ring. We worked on attacking the body for three months. For three months in the mountains without my family, without everything.”
The championship rounds saw more of the same as Canelo cruised to the final bell while being serenaded with chants from his thousands of loyal fans in attendance. After thanking his legions of supporters, Canelo declared himself open to facing anyone next .
“I still love boxing,” said Canelo. “I love boxing so much. Boxing is my life. Boxing made me the person I am today. That’s why I love boxing so much. And I love boxing so much because of my fans, too…Cinco de Mayo I’ll face whoever. I don’t care.”

If he wins they always bash off saying he nitpicked bad fighters, anything negative you can possibly name they will say it. (I am mexican myself but don't carry that mediocre mentality) The problem is summed up by the word Malinchism. It's highly prevalent in Mexico.

That guy went up two divisions to fight a beast like Canelo. It was immediately evident that Canelo was just too strong! I recall Rigondeaux versus Lomachenko. He was forced to quit very early in that fight because of the size and inactivity. Charlo did the best he could! He took some body shots and a few headshots. If he had a few fights at that weight, Charlo beats Canelo.

    • @@Hucho400 what was horrible about Canelo’s performance? He won essentially every round. He hurt and made his opponent take a knee. His opponent ran like it was the Boston marathon, how is that Canelo’s fault? Was the fight boring? Yes. But that’s what happens when your opponent runs and hugs all night. People say Canelo is passed his prime, so then Charlo jumped up two weight classes to fight a passed-his prime champion. Why couldn’t he knock Canelo out? If you say that would be crazy, then how come Canelo did just that when he beat Kovalev. Yet haters will criticize Canelo for that win. It makes no sense.

      @mgonzalezjr1986@mgonzalezjr19867 ай бұрын
    • @@mgonzalezjr1986 Charlo has been out of the ring for a year and a half after dealing with a hand injury. His first fight after a long layoff was with Canelo Alvarez, someone who is easily at the top of a lot of people's pound-for-pound list. Not only did Charlo choose to go after the undisputed champion on his first fight after a long layoff, but he moved up two weight classes to do it. These aren’t excuses; these are facts: he held his own for 12 rounds against someone who is considered to be the king of boxing with all odds against him. Jermell was supposed to go to sleep in that ring, but he managed to do good enough to make the fight go the distance. Jermell's biggest problem was that he wasn't focused, and it didn’t seem as if he really cared to win the fight. Canelo was gassed out in the later rounds, and he started slowing down. That was an opportunity for Charlo to let loose and really get the best of Canelo, but instead of Charlo being aggressive in those later rounds, he just set there and continued to let a gassed-out Canelo controlled the pace of the fight, and that cost him a lot. Canelo isn’t impossible to beat; Charlo just needs better training, and he needs to be more focused instead of being mesmerized by the moment and showing too much respect to his opponent. The only reason Jermell took a knee was because he was hit with an unexpected shot, and he was still able to get up and fight for another 5 rounds afterwards. Jermell didn’t have any bruises; not a single eye was swallowing, nor did he have a minor cut from the fight, yet Canelo's face was bruised up, and the bottom of his right eye was partially swollen. Canelo won this fight, but that was a horrible performance on both fighters behalf. Canelo is not ready for more elite fights, and Jermell needs to get focused.

    • @@Chrxs210 He was trying his best and got a few clean punches and a couple combinations in. he was trying to counter and was not doing too bad considering he was way outmatched. he handled himself like a true professional. Respect.
