Colin is one of the Pros from Blackjack Apprenticeship, as well as the subject of the documentary "Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians." • If the law says casinos can ban you when you start winning too much, there should be a law that they ban you when you start losing too much.

    • There isn't a law just for casinos. The "law" you're mentioning is a law for any business. Wheter it's a McDonalds or it's a museum, they all can deny you service if they want to. A casino can deny you entry if they know you are a card counter, but you can't be thrown into jail for it, as counting cards isn't illegal.

    • And that's why you don't go to casinos, it's your own fault for trying to scam the scammers. No one is forcing you to go in there. If you are going to try to win, then you better be better at hiding it that the pit boss is at finding it. Its a business and the goal is to always get more money in that the money you put out. That includes all of the expenses of hosting the establishment.

  • Went to a casino in Vegas and dropped 100 on a 25 minimum table. Hit 175 within 10 minutes and left - just off basic strategy. Within that time I noticed the pit boss taking a special interest and the dealer calling my safe plays the wrong plays even after she busted and I won the hand. Glad I left early then. But this is enlightening. Thanks for sharing.

They'd have called him over, led him to a back room or out into the alley/garage and stomped him out. "Pit Boss" is just a nickname that harkens back to the old days. These days, they're simply floor managers. They aren't thugs or bad guys, just professionals who look out for the casino's best interest and administer payouts. This pit boss was actually pretty polite and cool about the situation. He called him aside, confronted him about his (very obvious) counting and didn't even remove him from the floor. He just locked his bets, allowed him to cash out (if he wanted to) and let him be after that. He was free to continue playing blackjack (on locked bets) or play the other games if he wanted. All in all, (in the player's shoes), I wouldn't have even been annoyed. I'd have said, "fair enough" and then not be so obvious at another casino lol.

      @canobenitez@canobenitez2 жыл бұрын
    • @@canobenitez Personally, i think the counting +1 and -1 thing is flawed. The philosophy behind is that you win 50% more than the house at blackjacks, so it pays off to bet maximum bets at several hands when the shoe is rich. But i think it's a bit flawed. The true way to win at blackjack, and this is my personal theory, is much more difficult. You have to remember every single card that's gone. And then calculate the chance of what will happen when you draw the next card. If you can remember every card that's gone, you can predict with great accuracy what card comes next. This is the only way to realistically be a good blackjack player. You should sit at the end of the table, in order to more accurately predict which card the dealer gets. Because if you sit with 5 players to the left, it is much harder for you to predict what he or she will get, making it more difficult to make your own play. You basically have to be a logical genius at root, and then you have to practice for a very long time until reading, remembering and calculating becomes second nature, so it doesn't become suspicious. And you should smile and have fun too, as to act like you're stupid and a regular joe just having a good time and being lucky. And then quit before you win too much. Preferably spend a bit of money in the place too, if they have a restaurant or such, to make it look better. If one does this, i think it can be a way of living. The +1 -1 thing, i think is a very simplified strategy just taught widespread by the casinos in order to draw in more fools. Some may get lucky with it, but that just means that 1000 others lose their savings.

Deniro’s character is narrating, talking about how “casino life used to be glamorous,” layered over a shot of a large group of schlubs and senior citizens - some on walkers or in wheelchairs - rushing into the casino en masse as it opens. (To be clear, I am in no way saying that elderly people are schlubs, just that there are obvious schlubs in the group)

The most boring, useless and overrated place I have ever been to. Not to mention that I've also drank there the worst Cola of my life, like, seriously, that taste was a crime and Coca-Cola should want their money back for watering it out like this... The only two positive moments was a short talk with a security guard at the entrance, who was a talkative and friendly person, and meeting a guy looking like Tait Fletcher from John Wick movie, who probably also was on a lookout for card counters, as he was wearing a suit and some ID. I had short beard that time so he smiled to me in friendly way haha. Other than this? Even the girl with a cart with drinks looked like she was gambling for 5 years and now works in casino as a punishment... Casinos are disaster, unless you own them...

If they win they have no complaints. If they lose, they have countless complaints about how they've gotten robbed. Nobody is forcing anybody to play their tables or machines. If you choose to play at a casino, you're also choosing to accept whatever rules are in place, no matter how (unfair) they may be or seem. It is a conscious decision everytime. If you don't have the self control to stop risking your money then that's your problem. Life is unfair, life is full of risks. It is what it is.

He came to play marathon sessions of poker and then return to his teaching job in Ohio. We went into town, he gave me 20 dollars and instructions on basic strategy. I went into the old Gold Nugget and played for a few hours. The minimum was only 1 dollar then. When I was done, I cashed out with an 8 dollar win. I was hooked for the rest of my life on the game of blackjack and I won more money than I lost. But got barred from playing in a few places in town and moved over to poker in the late 70's. I have had pit bosses say "Justin, you are an excellent Blackjack player and we respect your skills. However, due to it not being a wise investment for us to let you play, with are going to respectfully ask that you do not play Blackjack here". I respect that response much more than this guy. He beats around the bush with why he will not allow Colin to play.
