Hockey Explained (Rosters, Positions, Officials, Stadiums, Ice & More!) [2020]
Are you new to hockey? If you want to start watching hockey, but you don’t exactly understand what’s happening on the ice, or what everything even is, then this video is for you! Hockey is an amazing sport, but without some context, it’s easy to get lost in the speed of the game. In this video we’ll talk about everything you need to know before you watch your first game.
In this video we’ll be talking about all the things that you see when you turn on the tv, or first sit down in the stands. First we’ll go over the arena, then we’ll talk about the personnel running the game, and finally we’ll go over the composition of a hockey team.

@ansioh Thanks so much for the kind words! I tried to create a female character, but I just couldn't get it quite right. I'll keep trying though. As for more diversity with the players, that is a fantastic idea! For this video, I just copied and pasted the same player model, but in the next ones, I'll take time to make sure that we have a more accurate representation. Thanks again for the feedback :)
It would be cool if you could do a series on Volleyball, both on the court and on the beach. There are many tactics that are hard to understand with the positions switching in and out and strategies.
@@endoraroberts awesome idea! Would definitely like to take a look at volleyball this year.
This was an amazing tutorial. Really. I've been watching hockey for a little less than a year and picked up on a lot of the in-game stuff, but I didn't really know what a defenseman was (I basically thought they were players more skilled at defense instead of offense, but they're an actual position), or what most of the zones meant. Most of the stuff I knew was from The Mighty Ducks, but other than line change, it didn't really explain the rules all that well. It doesn't seem like "fighting" is really enforced in the NHL, though.
@@encycl07pedia- that’s awesome! Hope you continue to enjoy hockey! I think I learned about line changes from The Mighty Ducks too.
As a new hockey fan this is the best video I have seen on the subject.
Welcome to the sport! Hit us up if you ever have any questions. It’s probably time to make another video.
You will love the sport quickly! I know it!
Same
As an old hockey fan [since 92, go bolts] this is a great video I was looking for one to show a friend explaining and this is perfect.
This is really helpful. My wife recently started playing hockey and I’m at the point where I have lots of questions about the game while spectating. Your videos explain everything so clearly and take away a lot of the confusion. It’s such a fun and exciting sport and it’s the first time in my life I’ve actually cared about the rules of a sport I wasn’t actively playing 😂
Really glad I was able to help! Thanks for watching!
I’m canadian…I’m 28 but I’ve been watching hockey for over 20 years and it, along with soccer, is one of the easiest sports to understand lol….the only thing that might be hard to sometimes understand are the penalties and offsides (which is when the player crosses the offensive blue line before the puck does) but other than that, it’s a really easy sport to understand lol
Also (if you didn’t mention it) the blue lines are used for ‘off sides’ or ‘on side’. To be off side that means that a player is in the offensive area before the puck. That means that the player is in the zone then he or she touches the puck. They will then use the other face off points in the neutral zone.
This and the referees job could've been summed up too.
I just watched all of your videos, they’re great! The graphics along with the clear explanation really helped me understand. Please do more. I’d like to see other sports explained: golf, american football, soccer, etc. I loved the hockey ones, and wouldn’t mind more that explain the draft process, fighting rules, penalty calls, history, anything, just more. Great job.
Hey thanks so much! I was thinking about doing one on salary caps - but I like your ideas as well!
THIS IS THE GREATEST INTRO TO HOCKEY VIDEO ON THE WEB
Thank you! I hope to fine tune that intro animation in episode 2
@@baconstrips6260 KZhead only shows you how many comments the person has specifically put on this channel, when I look at your profile ot says you've made 2.
Super helpful animations! Volunteered at the arena today and got to watch a bit of the game and I was so lost just seeing players hop on and off the ice constantly. I understand it a bit better now, thank you for the videos!! ^^
Omg this video helped me so much.😂 Thank you! Also, your icing and offsides video was great too!
Thank you so much for making this video! My son is getting into hockey and I be been watching games with him but this helped me understand the game better!
I've been watching hockey for at least 15 years now and I still watched this whole video for some reason
Omg this video helped me so much. Thank you! Also, your icing and offsides video was great too!
New to hockey and this is the best video I’ve ever seen explaining the sport thank you
The quality is insanely good for the reach KZhead has given it!! Great work please keep up the great content
Thanks man you are awesome this video definitely helps to start watching hockey games
Honestly this was so helpful! Thank you for creating this and sharing!
This video is fantastic. I’m just getting into playing/watching hockey and this explains a lot. Thank you very much.
Awesome video! Just started watching hockey cause of the PWHL, and this video format was really easy to understand
Going to my first game on the 26th so I really needed this. Thanks 🙏🏼.
Thank you! My nephews play and I want to be able to bond with them over their love for the game.
Watching this to get ready for the Utah NHL team! Thank you!
Thank you for this video! Much appreciated !!!
ive been wanting to get into hockey and this definitely helped
An offside is basically where your skating really fast, and you get into the other offensive or neutral zone before the puck is going and gets there. Also, it can also be when you move out of the zone the puck is in, and go back in in a short amount of time. That will cause the refs to call an offsides play and a new draw will be done.
This was so helpful! Thank you :)
Very informative! Great job with the video, keep em' coming! :)
Thank for watching! Will do :)
Great great video. Thankyou so much!!!
Thank you so much for this!!!
wow this was IMMENSELY helpful
As an avid hockey player, watcher, and enjoyer, I can say this video was very well done and couldn't describe it better myself
This is very helpful, thank you very much!
I've watched and loved hockey for years and there were still plenty of things I didn't know...so this made my heart happy lol
That’s awesome to hear! Thanks so much for watching.
very well explained! thank you
My son plays hockey he loved this video so much
That’s awesome to hear! Hope he has a good season!
im going to my first nhl game soon so this is for sure going to help
Thank you so much for this well explained beginner friendly video!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching
I’ve been watching hockey for years, clicked on this video to just see what it was like seeing it through the eyes of someone who had no idea, they hit a lot of good post especially really good lines getting nicknames
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Great video. Thanks bro
Great animation and explanation, here's my comment and a subscriber!
I am from utah and heard we might be getting a team so im so excited to learn about hockey!
moved to malmö 2 years ago and i've been to many Redhawks games. First few was like a blur, didn't even know what was going on :D this video is great because I still don't know the positions of players and who does what. I will look further into the game because it is damn fun to watch!
Thank you sir🙏
Such a great video and explanation. Thank you
Thanks so much!
Are you planning on doing anything to explain easy rules like icing and offsides? That's what my new fan friends really need, though this was great!
Thanks so much! I think the next few episodes will be on icing, offsides and penalties. I might also do one on the playoff format.
@@BenchWormSports can you do cricket after the hockey stuff
@@shaintheredpanda6834 that’s definitely a sport that I want to learn more about. That would be fun.
As a Brit, this was super useful. Cheers.
12yr old me would have loved this video, its awesome!
Great Video I just got back into hockey now that Seattle has a new Team "The Kraken",Bad Ass!!
So useful!
An interest in watching ice hockey can strike at any age. I saw my first ice hockey game in person less than two weeks ago. Now I am a fan; I would qualify for senior tickets if they are offered. Last year I moved to where the SPHL team Rail Yard Dawgs resides, but I didn't even know there was a hockey team until the Dawgs won their league's championship, the President's Cup. Our neighbors offered guest tickets and transportation to the last home game this year. My husband didn't have a bad time, but I had a great time! I attended my next game solo, and he has agreed to accompany me to the first game of Round 2 in this year's playoffs.
Really nice video
This video was brilliant. ❤
Thank you!
its cool! shows that youve put work into it
Thanks so much! I’m working on a few more right now. Hoping to release the next one in a week or so.
Going to my first hockey game tonight. Thank you so much!
Enjoy the game! Let us know if you have any questions after the game.
Great video 🙂👍 very helpful. I've tried watching games before but it's so fast paced and I didn't know any of the rules so I was mostly just confused wondering why they were doing certain things 😅
Awesome - really glad it helped! Thanks for watching
Super helpful ty
Thanks for watching!
Watched my hockey game yesterday and my home team won. It was fun. Time to learn how to skate
Hey congrats - enjoy learning to skate!
Great video!
Thanks so much!
Did you guys do all the graphics? They're wonderful, and so is the rest of the video!
Thanks so much! Yup we do all of the graphics - so glad you like them!
Excellent Job to the creators of this video!!!
Thanks so much!
Amazing video, thank you. Please make one for Baseball.
Thanks! Baseball is definitely on the to-do list.
I’m going to my first hockey game this Saturday, I hope this helps me lol
Enjoy your first game!
It’s all coming together now
Arizona Coyotes just moved to Utah. I guess it’s time to learn all about hockey!
Need you to revive this channel, these videos are 🔥🔥
Thanks! I'm currently working on one about goalies.
@@BenchWormSports YESSS!!
I moved to Seattle back in 2019 and in 2022 they enter the NHL. I already had a NFL and MLB team but never really was in to NHL but now that I have a team to cheer for I want to learn it.
You’re lucky! The Kraken are an awesome team to root for, and the arena is one of the best the league!
going to a game tomorrow night and this video was a godsend
Enjoy the game - really hope this helps!
You make amazing videos please post more
Thanks! Will definitely be posting more in the coming months.
Thank you so damn much
Thank you!
I miss the enforcer days. Probert dropping gloves was always entertaining. Hockey isn't big in Australia but I trained under a coach who played for Calgary. The league isnt as fast paced as the NHL and checking rarely happens.
I’m from a region that doesn’t offer hockey as a sport but I watched Gretzky and Messier play as a kid on ESPN at night. I want to watch it again and pick a team to pull for.
Love it
These videos rock
Thanks so much! Let us know if you have any sports questions.
Been watching hockey my whole life so idk why I'm watching this but I gotta say it's good
That’s awesome to hear! Thanks so much
Now when I think about it, its kinda unusual for hockey to have separate bench for players who are expelled for 2 minutes or more bcs in all other sports expelled players go to their teams bench
As someone who tries to get into a lot of the offseason moves, do you think you could do a video explaining salary caps, trades, etc?
Thanks for the suggestion! Currently working on a video about salary caps.
Awesome video! Are the lines set in stone, or does it ever happen that a player from another line plays with two members of a given line?
Also kudos for mentioning the zamboni drivers, ice cleaners and mascots! xD 🏒
Awesome question! The lines aren't set in stone, but if the team is having a good game, it's not likely that the coach will switch up the line combinations. If a team is struggling, you may see the coach make adjustments and move around players, forming new line combinations. Sometimes you'll hear a commentator refer to this as "putting lines through a blender". I also didn't touch on special teams in this video - teams have different lines when they're on the powerplay and penalty kill. I'll make sure to get to that in a future video.
I move to Canada this month and the pressure is onnnn 😭
Welcome to Canada! Hope you enjoy watching hockey!
I would have also pointed out how to tell the deference between the Referees and Linesmen. The Referees uniforns have an Orange Disk on the sleeve.
Boutta get a lot of Utah viewers xD
Welcome to all new viewers from Utah and congrats!
I mostly watch nfl and nba but I always wanted to get into nhl.
Great vid, thanks, I am 35 yo and going to attend tomorrow to my first hockey game, in Nuremberg, I hope I will like it!
Hope you enjoyed your first game!
@@BenchWormSports to be honest, it was more entertaining than I thought it will, I really loved it! I used to underestimate the fact that they do these things on ice skates, but it's harder than it looks on TV, and I think it takes years to master. The event was sold-out, with 7600 people attending, even though Nuremberg lost 4-2 in DEL play-offs!
"We all know the basic rules-" no sir that's why I'm here 😭
Jokes aside, thank you for the video! This channel is a godsend for visual learners
Need to make an advanced intro to hockey, that way you can mention the Zamboni driver being the alternate goalie! Then a pro into and try to explain offsides and cross checking.
I’d love to do a whole video on just explaining the emergency backup goalie. For offsides, I made this video: kzhead.info/sun/edytf72OgKmBbI0/bejne.html
Watched this because i want to get into hockey because of seattle kraken being a newer team
Cool
How often do offside occurs in a match before goal
POV you just started reading off campus and now you are trying to understand hockey 😅
Offsides should have been explained here as that is one of the most common questions new fans have. But otherwise great video.
After expansion in 1967, the announcer in Pittsburgh would come over the PA system, to tell the fans why the whistle blew, ie offside, icing.
That’s pretty awesome. People’s first games can be jarring when they realize there’s no commentary.
@@BenchWormSports My first live game Maple Leaf Gardens, vs Oakland. Goalies Bruce Gamble and Gary "suitcase" Smith, no masks. My second game vs Vancouver, same Goalies, hence the nickname suitcase.
I guess this is good
The only issue I have is your comment on madison Square garden, the most historic though it pains me is the fourm in montreal
Ah good point!
it felt so weird to hear this music outside of a macie jay video
Shame that you didn’t keep making videos, this channel would’ve blown up
Thanks for the comment! Hoping to get another one out in the coming weeks. Working on a video about salary caps.
1:04 up until before this, I genuinely thought whole my life that Madison Square Garden are public place, like place where people gathered NOT an actual stadium 😅😅😅😅
😂
Its hilarious to me that the score keeper has two assistants to assist him in keeping score. "Damn another goal to add to the score? I'm getting tired take over for me BIll"
😂
me having played hockey for 11 years watching this right now
As a figure skater the penalty boxes made me laugh so hard bcs usually that’s where we keep our stuff and hang out during sessions and use it to hide from our coaches haha, atleast in our rink
question: does D pair Line ups matter? I’m 2nd pair
i think i get it lol, hockey really seems interesting but i sort of still don’t understand it, i think i just gotta watch a couple of games to get it lol
