I don't know why this car is forgotten these days. It seems to me the most spectacular-looking Mercedes of this century.
I'd go as far as saying it's the single greatest Benz since the W126 and the original 1955 300SL Glowing, and my personal favorite Mercedes only to the SLR and the Gullwing.

My girlfriends Dad owns one. He collects Mercades cars. He just got one and all it does is sit in his 9 car garage, collecting dust. It literally only had 2,300 miles on it when I drove it a few weeks ago. I eventually persuaded my girlfriends Dad to let me drive it. It was a crazy experience but the hood was so damn long, seemed longer in person lol. It was such a smooth car but I didn't take it over 90 because I didn't want to be in debt 190,000 dollars lol. I go over to the house every now and then just to sit in it, and bask in its glory. Amazing car. Same coloration as the one in this video. I giggled like a school girl driving it, and had like 12 videos of the car on my snapchat story lol

For those who didn't know - the SLS is designed with bolts that will fire the door off its hinges if the car is upside down.

The SLS has been my dream car since I was 8. I was so upset when it got replaced with the AMG GT. I love the SLS. I have a bit of a distaste for the AMG GT. I just think the SLS is better.
The AMG GT is nice, but inferior to the SLS in every way possible other than pure performance.
@@kenlykkeslett7501 in an interview some boss at Mercedes precise the amg gt is not really a successor to the sls as its a spiritual gullwing to the classic one. The amg gt is touring normal door gt. But another sls mk2 could take some times as they say we have more than half a century to wait for this so some years of waiting and thinking for a new gullwing is ok.
@@davidgouyaie8027 I can understand that, but they are very similar to me. They have the same proportions, the same type of drivetrain, and they never overlapped production. Not to mention the SLS being used as a safety car in F1, and the moment the AMG GT arrived it replaced the SLS. I hope you are right though. A true SLS mk2 would be wonderful!

@@kenlykkeslett7501 I think maybe Mercedes only replaced the sls because the amg gt was replacing it purpose wise but it wasn’t the next car in the bloodline. Even with the release of the 2022 SL someone from Mercedes said other cars they offer will be modified structure wise so the Mercedes sl has its own lane in their lineup
Doug you were right about the SLR, but they are starting to shoot up in value. The SLR is my favorite Mercedes exotic, because it was so ahead of its time. Also, the SLR design is cooler and that engine from the SLR is a beast. Lastly, the number of SLR's built is quite limited even compared to the SLS, which will mean that they will ultimately shoot up in value as well.

I'd buy a new 2017 GT3 with zero miles for the same money, before I ever considered an SLS. I wouldn't even consider the SLS for half the money they're asking. The only thing special about this car is the doors and they're a pain in the ass based on what we see in the video. The cheap plastic interior, poorly designed trunk, and even the ugly unbalanced look of the body don't make it any better. This car will sell for at least $50K less than the asking price.
RedondoBeach2 the GT3 isn't a head turner like the SLS.
There are people who will want the car but the only reason it might sell is because of the doors. There's nothing about the rest of the car that makes a car this old, designed as poorly as it is, worth that much.
The high opening hood is on all Mercedes, even early ones from the 70's and 80's.

Mike_TheLegend it is nice when working on the car. The hood basically never needs to come off, even if the engine needs to be pulled. Several people on Mercedes forms have said that it was so they could install the engine in the factory with the hood already on, but that never made any sense to me.
The main reason is that you're not hitting your head on the classic Mercedes grill. By older Mercedes models is the grill attached to the hood, so when you put the hood to the almost 90 degree service angle, you won't scratch your head at the grill while your working at the engine.

That's not enough, you'd also need to get rid of any buttons and replace them with a touch screen to really reduce that weight.
Those holes has nothing to do with weight reduction lol; They're there so u can see traffic lights without bending yourself down..
Actually, it's just for safety so you can see through them. If you put your eyes up very close it's a surprisingly clear view.

Hood opens like that (vertical) in most Mercedes if you press a catch on the hinge/hydraulic ram, makes for easy access to rear of engine during service.

I think the best review I've seen from him in the last few years was when he reviewed the Tesla plaid. You can see him sweating and his his shock and awe is actually palpable. He's speechless and it's so genuine. But this is what I love about Doug's channel..... He's a real guy and hes really doing something he loves and it's very clear that hes not being paid to say anything. Probably my 2nd favorite review from him is when he s*it on the Mercedes G wagon a few months ago. It was like a 20 minute rant about how it was absolutely not worth the money... And how he would never want to be seen driving a pretentious car that was built so poorly. You could almost feel the disdain he had for the car

This is a VERY LOW optioned SLS. In fact, other than the "free option" split spoke wheels, it has no options. The nicely optioned ones have carbon fiber trimmed interiors(in response to his cheap interior comment). For 2011, if you added all the options, it brings the sticker up by an additional $50k+. Ceramic brakes($13k), Bang & Olufsen stereo($6500), full carbon fiber interior($9k), carbon fiber engine compartment($6k), alubeam silver paint ($12k), etc. And later model years had even more option choices. Too bad he couldn't get a hold of a better optioned one versus this bare bones example.
I fell in love with the SLS the moment I saw it in the dealership when it came out. Still my dream car.

This is the 2nd time I watch this video... I have a Vantage S and I watched some of your videos before purchasing it, but honestly if I had the money, I would exchange it for a SLS all day long. In South Florida there was an elder lady around 2016 who was letting only me park and drive her 2014 silver SLS gull-wing. It’s a beast. You come in your pants when you turn it on. It kicks your heart into another different rhythm. It has very few competitors on the road.

I work at a Mercedes dealer and had the pleasure to service one of these yesterday. Absolutely crazy car, spins the rearwheels if you so much as look at the throttle but the best thing is the sound, holy jebus the sound. Its the manliest engine sound Ive ever heard by far.
The thing I like about this car is that I was a kid when it came out and my grandpa was a kid when the 300 SL came out (that’s the car this one is based off of) we like both of them and Mercedes always has a special place in our harts 👍 I still need one, I’ve wanted one since I first saw it on top gear

Liam Quiroga SLS and GTS aren't really comparable. The SLS was in the Ferrari 458 range. The GTS is a 911 rival, mean to be sold in more volume. Two different leagues of car. Yes, they're almost identical in performance, but the SLS is a 6 year old car of the entry level supercar league, while the GTS is a new car of the higher end sports car league. The GTS may have replaced the SLS, but it's not a true successor. It all comes down to what someone is looking for in a car.

Although the GT S is cheaper and similar performance, the SLS will hold its value and likely appreciate. And guaranteed it turns more heads than the GT S. You take the SLS if you have the money. Now the tougher question is SLS or GT R? I think the GT R will be a game changer.
***** nah, amg gt r has better looks, better interior, better performance, great sound yet isn't a gas guzzler like the sls, not to mention it's no where near as expensive as a sls bs. So it's better in almost every way despite NOT being designed as a replacement to the sls bs. That said you can't go wrong with either. ;)

this still look new... Aged really well. And another feature that i havent seen in that many cars, the rear parking sensor display is actually in the rear so it doesnt sit in some annoying spot on the dashboard taking space like in other cars from that era. U can see it turn on at 6:32
It actually makes me very uneasy how u drive such awesome and expensive cars and still time to time look in the camera and talk about the experience, that shit is so damn tough in india where u cant even be sure whats gonna come in front of u even when ur driving at 40-60 kmph so u have to be pretty much alert all the time. I always thought this car is considered exotic. For me, it's cheaper version of SLR, but it's still a car that is Mercedes Benz: comfort-wise, performance-wise and as good looking and elegant as every car (of this brand) should be.
Doug’s reaction to revving engines is the same as mine. I get all giddy and just have to laugh.
The windscreen visors have the cheese grate sections so that when the car is at a stoplight with the visors down, you can move your head slightly to see it the lights have changed through the visor ;)
