We’re back again for more cross country skiing, and this time we’re joined by Norway’s national hero, Olympic gold medalist Øystein Pettersen.
And where better to go XC skiing than Norway’s best cross country skiing location: Sjusjøen.
And many thanks to our Sponsor " Visit Sjusjøen " who helps us on the road to the Birkenbeiner cross country skiing race.
Still being very much cross country skiing beginners, especially when it comes to the skating style of skiing, we had a lot to learn from a professional and former world champion.
Øystein Pettersen has taken part many times in the famous Birkebeinerrennet race, which we’ll be competing in again next year, so we made sure to get his best tips and advice in preparation for that.
Also known as Nordic skiing, sometimes ski touring, or simply XC skiing, this sport is growing increasingly popular thanks to the combination of exercise and technique.
As we learnt in our previous XC ski episode, cross country skiing, or langrennsski as it’s known in Norwegian, actually has two quite distinct styles, classic and skating (klassisk and skøyte in Norwegian respectively). The equipment, and more importantly technique, are vary significantly in each.
Nordic skiing can be a serious workout and many consider skiers to have some of the highest VO2 max levels of any support. However, it’s also a popular activity with recreational skiers who simply enjoy heading out for a leisurely trip.
Cross country ski skating is a tough one to master but as Øystein Pettersen says, its also incredible fun. We are true beginners in cross country skiing and learn tips and tricks with xc Skiing from the olympic gold cross country skiier himself.
Cross country skiing how to? is maybe the questions you want to find answer to as beginner in cross country skiing, and how to cross country skiing is exactly what øystein pettersen will show us.
Which one do you think is the most fun of xc skiing is it classic cross country or is it Skating cross country skiing?
Who would you like to see us ski with next? Perhaps Johannes Klæbo? Or maybe Therese Northaug?
Andy as always, for any collaborations please do contact us on Thomas@becomenorwegian.com

  • Skate skiing is much harder than it looks. I can completely relate to having your weight in the middle instead of over a flat ski. With classic skiing, the biggest transition is from shuffling, in which you always have both skis on the snow, to skiing, in which you glide on only one ski. It takes practice and balance.

    • It really is not that easy, but it’s fun to focus on a the small technical parts!

    • I find classic skiing harder. proper technique is more important in classic.

  • I can speed skate. It helps a little (with not having ones weight in the middle), but still found it hard to balance on one ski and slide, which surprised me because a skate is SO MUCH narrower. I loved, loved, this 'lesson". Funny guy and awesome athlete.

  • I really haven't skied since the late 1990's. But put a pair of skis on my feet, as happened recently, and it was just like riding a bike. The first meters might have been a bit awkard, then it was just smooth sailing, felt libearating. Guess us Norwegians are born with skis after all :)

    • Good on you getting back out there! We’ve definitely seen that Norwegian saying to be true out on the ski tracks ⛷️🇳🇴 fingers crossed we get there one day!

  • Entertaining as ever. As two Brits who are visiting Sjusjøen for the first time in a few weeks what tracks would you suggest starting on? We're OK on skate skis but not great and this'll be the first time out since last winter bar rollerskiing so nothing too ambitious please!

    • Thanks for watching! That sounds like a dream trip, we can highly recommend to start at the «sjusjøen langrenns arena» and from there On it’s all clear Tracks and very manageable terrain. If you don’t already have the app “Skisporet” I recommend to get that, as this will act as your map and tell you a bit about the trails around you. I wish you a lovely weekend⛷️

      @Becomenorwegian@Becomenorwegian4 ай бұрын
    • @Becomenorwegian Thanks, I have downloaded the app. I think I was expecting numbered trails like in Austria but it looks more like lots of small linked sections like Strava. At least we won't get lost! We've been meaning to go for a few years as we usually go to the World Cup biathlon at Holmenkollen and planned to combine the two. Biathlon is the wrong time for us this year but we'll finally make it to Sjusjøen anyway. Really looking forward to it!
