  • I loved ED so much. I had thousands of hours in it. But this just doesn't interest me at all. What would interest me are ship interiors, new ground vehicles, more detailed settlements, alien fauna and planets with atmospheres.

    • Yes exactly, things that make the universe more vibrant and lively. To be clear, the following is a list of ideas of possible avenues to make the game feel less empty, not a list of things I think should ALL be added: They should be churning out new sets of textures for most assets so we can stop looking at the exact same models across the entire universe. Possible other ideas for added variety include sand planets with adobe mud cities, metropolises with skyscrapers, outposts made of log cabins instead of literally every planetary building being the same metal texture, procedurally generated plants/animals, being able to encounter migrating groups of NPCs that i can trade with or get missions from, maybe even underwater environments you can use certain ships to dive to on water planets kinda like subnautica. I dont care if they take some shortcuts to add varied content like random weapon/module stats like borderlands (within some limited range and rarity curve) and more complex randomly generated missions like multi stage missions and scripted cutscenes generated from the randomly generated mission to show instead of tell the mission to the player would be so much more engaging. Instead they release one additional ship while NMS adds a ship builder that enables like unlimited new ships. Imo they should have leaned more on procedural generation to fill out the universe. I wanted elite to feel like you're flying around in the star wars universe where theres something going on everywhere rich and full of different walks of life including civilians not just identical suited up NPCs in stations or at settlements, where a significant portion of the planets would have something going on. In all my years of playing i dont remember a planet with more than 5 settlements, each the size of like a school campus. Are there even more station types than in the original elite? It feels like it doesnt really matter where you are in the universe, everything is the same unless you're hunting for a specific item.

Along with that, there’s brand new complex and detailed station exterior models. And it’s all in-game right now. Fdev today: Decals. Coming this summer.

Players don't want grind - let's skip this topic. Players want more immersion, like inside ships, living planets - we're not going to do that because we design games, and we have not time for this. Players want a new game engine because the current Cobra is more than 15 years old - oh, f* off players.

  • Let's just remember that Elite Dangerous features a full-scale galaxy with millions of star systems, so why is it that there are no new features that make exploration more interesting and rewarding? I would like for there to be far more to discover than the handful of biological and geological features that currently exist.

    @therealjamespickering@therealjamespickeringАй бұрын
    • Because it's a creative lie. The galaxy is a full scale dice roll of the same 10 assets. That's why so little of the game is explored. Everything not seen is visually the same to everything seen. What's the point to exploration.

      @walawala-fo7ds@walawala-fo7dsАй бұрын
    • I think there's a great way of both adding more depth to the game, and making exploration rewardable. Add gulids, give them the ability to build bases (beyond The Bubble), and have a system grow far faster if it has a Continental or Oceanic world, as well as metals source in form of a ring, asteroid cluster, or a Metal Rich World. Players would race each other to find better spots to settle. Then add a threat to defend those bases from.

    • I think powerplay COULD work. People would definitely be simping hard for blue-haired Eisling Duval, and conquering systems in her name. BUT Frontier just had to make powerplay grind as well. You can't just buy 750 Merits in one go, you have to buy them in sets of 10. Literally the only reason nobody even bothers with powerplay beyond special modules. Oh, and another reason is that goods transport is way more efficient than combat.

  • With the whole changes to station interiors changing slightly when the super power has taken over control, I just can't help but compare it to the new update for No Man's sky. Which did exactly what this update did and more, overhauling the entire space station and creating a new gameplay loop to allow players to customise their space ship entirely which has been a highly requested feature... Yet Fdev were only able to change a system that nobody really cares about, revamping engineering would have taken less time than this.

    • Even further from that. No Man's Sky does not have dlc to buy. They have done countless updates to keep the game fun, engaging and relevant. But it also isn't the same as Elite Dangerous. The two games began with development focused at the opposite ends of gameplay. ED began and focused purely on ships with complex non Newtonian space flight. NMS began and focused on foot based content. With space travel and simplistic space controls. I think the developers for NMS look out at other games where as Frontier at least until recently afaik have refused to look at other games to see features that work well to implement their own version.

I see where it comes from but this game is a supposed to be a realistic representation of the universe, of course there’s going to be similar stuff. There’s still tons of undiscovered regions that have their own properties and tendencies that you can spend time trying to get to know an area and it’s intricacies. Maybe there’s an abundance of a certain element or a certain star or planet type, or maybe it’s a large star forming region or one with very little star formation and many other things that make and area distinct and interesting.

However, it can be a big quality of life improvement if you let go of the idea that you have to fully engineer things. Getting components to G3 gives 70-80% of the potential improvement on something like 20% of the material cost compared to G5. Even if all you do is engineer your FSDs to G3, it's a huge improvement and not hard or grindy at all. The grind comes in when people feel like they have to be completionist about it and prioritize getting everything to G5 over actually enjoying the gameplay they like. To do ship interiors is a MASSIVE amount of work and would require a complete overhaul of not only the engine but also the mechanics of ship combat and interstellar travel. I'd love to walk around in my ships, but once you've done it a few times, that's it. Having to get out of the ship, walk to a specific location, interact to secure a mission, walk back to the ship and get back to the cockpit every time VERY QUICKLY becomes tedious and massively slows down gameplay. The model of being able to do everything quickly from in-ship like in Elite Dangerous is vastly superior.

A good powerplay system where players can engage and make a difference for a faction, combined with other BGS events (eg Thargoids) can actually make players feel like more active members in a huge galaxy than just being there for the scenery. I know I don't just speak for myself, to repeat, but I do not know for how many others I speak and whether this will be really a breath of fresh air or (too little and) too late. Everything felt more convoluted than it needed to. It felt like I had to go and make the fun, find the fun, interpret the fun. It wasn’t like interesting content and a compelling and interesting universe pulling me in. No doubt it felt like space, it felt like a galaxy for sure. But that was also its downside. I felt like I could be travelling aimlessly, as I clumsily tried to understand the galaxy map, and check wikis and KZhead on how to start generating money. It all felt like hard work, and a grind, just to get started! I appreciate depth, but draw me through the experience by compelling events or a story, that forces me to learn, instead of trying to work out how to find enjoyment in the game.

I haven't played NMS and only just started with SC, but I do play Dual Universe (DU), Empyrion Galactic Survival (EGS) and occasionally Entropia Universe (EU). The reason I mention this is because it would be nice to see a game with the building mechanics and graphics of DU, game play of EGS and a friendly game community like EGS and EU (unlike some factions in Eve Online). However to achieve this, a company would need top programmers/engineers, top flight hardware and net access, and an unlimited budget. So we just have to wait for technology to bring us more options that are affordable and one that players will be happy to pay a sub for. *BTW I'm really enjoying @ObsidianAnt's contribution in Voice Attack's/HCS voice control app. Very good mate!

    • It is a cool and expansive sandbox, one with an entire milky way galaxy. And the thing is, you don’t even have to partake in the grind. I have 430 hours on elite and I’ve done barely any grinding for engineering apart from basic ship systems like FSD’s and power plants and the like. I still have tons of fun! As someone who is an avid explorer, people who say exploration is dull just don’t seem to fully appreciate the sheer complexity and depth there is to the galactic simulation. Different regions have different properties and quirks that make them interesting to study. Maybe there’s a large abundance of a certain element or planet type. Maybe an abundance or under abundance of stars or star types, maybe there’s a lot of captured objects in systems that could indicate to this area being a star forming one or recently having been. The structures that bands of stars can form can tell you more about an area. Maybe there is a type of exobiology organism/organisms that are specific to an area of space, and not so abundant or completely absent from another area. There’s so much intrigue to the galaxy and I love it. Not everyone can appreciate the small details of the galaxy sometimes, but that’s no problem, because others will 😉.

    • @@Notbigbird That's cool but you are describing only exploring and the game has other parts that are not well thought. Have you ever played on a Freelancer server? Especially a roleplaying one like Discovery back in its high day? The interconnected systems and that the players were thrown in a lesser but with better thought out sandbox made it so you could have different situations that were caused by the players themselves, which made playing that game extremely unique because you did not know what would happen in your next play session. In that game, I and friends played as an independent pirate group. We were chased by police and military (all human players). We had bounties on our heads and thus had to change star sectors frequently to avoid BHs. We fought in big battles, taking sides with different pirate groups and etc. It wasn't just fighting, we traded, we interacted with other players in different ways. This is something Elite is missing. The human interaction that is both meaningful and easy to do. Elite is not designed for that at all. It's a single player game, where you either grind or do exploring, like you said. Yes, there were attempts to bring this human interaction in Elite in the forms of Fuel Rats and various expeditions but if the game devs do not make it so that the game allows for such things to be easily done, like for example in Helldivers, if we are in need of reinforcements, we can use a SOS beacon, to attract other players to help. The in game mechanic is both easy to use and doesn't break immersion. While to ask for a fuel rat to assist you, you'd need to go to a website outside the game, send a request... like, such stuff should be in game. And don't get me started on the technical multiplayer issues in Elite. Anyway, good for you that you enjoy it still. I stopped playing 2019 and tried it again in 2020-1 and never opened it again. Also obligatory message: screw engineering!

  • Powerplay-Overhaul is 100% Meh. And I refuse to be hyped for their mysterious "new feature" that they refuse to elaborate on. And if it is anything other than Ship Interiors OR something of equal Caliber like actual Atmospheric Planets (or Basebuilding I guess ... thought this would really be the worst of the Caliber ...). That might be it.

    • its nothing you have to pay for... so some little Hype does not Hurt... Check it out when it does come out... 1-2 Hours playtime is nothing that does hurt anybody

  • Fdev is a joke. This is the complete rework they told us about? How are interior station decorations supposed to encourage pvp? Also I'm afraid the stronghold carrier groups, while cool in concept, will end up the same as capitol ship conflict zones. That is to say boring, static, and filled only with npcs. Power Play needs to be open only ffs. I'd just like to log on, see where my faction is fighting, go there and pew pew players of an opposing faction. As it is you go there and pew pew npcs while enemy faction players play in solo grinding the npc ships on your side. Am I missing something? Make it make sense! Where is the group pvp in this game!? Squadrons can't even fight each other as there is no traditional mmo guild war mechanic. Is it simply the peer-to-peer networking that is to blame?
