The "Godfather" of lowrider bikes
In Compton, California, there's an art form that grew from the streets, one with a decidedly Latino flavor. For 44 years Manny Silva has been creating by hand a very distinctive style of lowrider bicycle, an offspring of lowrider cars. His brilliantly elaborate chrome and metal creations - many worth thousands of dollars - are two-wheeled feasts for the eyes. Mireya Villareal reports.

Here I am in the UK riding a mildly customised Raleigh 20. It makes me feel good. But these lowriders are on another level. It's good to see such positivity and love.

I got into tall bikes, as well as swing bikes, and other various chop shop style rides as a kid. Now at 44 it definitely shows that a lot of these creations were inspired by the low rider culture. If I ever had the chance to be in LA, visiting Mannys shop would be a blessing. Keep up the fine work, and thanks.
I met Manny last summer, he is a cool guy !! He let me try one of his 26 inch full gold bicycle, and thanks again to him.

I remember going to a Low Rider show in San Diego in 1982- under the Coronado Bridge. I always saw the cars rolling around my neighborhood- but that day at the show, I saw the Lowrider for the first time. Pretty cool to an 8 year old kid👍.

Latinos are ; ( salvadorenos,hondurenos,puert ricans etc. etc. ) they had nothing to do with low rider bikes. Chicanos started this type of bicycle customizing along with lowrider cars. Don't give them credit for something they had absolutely nothing to do with. They all started embracing this style once it was brought out by us Chicanos!

47 years old and from Louisiana. Customized bikes was a big thing here in the early 80's. The police got involved because we were stealing hood ornaments for our bikes so the news announced if you're spotted with a car ornament on your bike without a receipt you will be arrested. Cali took it to the next level but they wasn't first Extended forks, high rise handle bars, and banana seats on a beach cruiser was how it started.

Steven Hayles lowriding is a lifestyle and from what I know , these things aren't cheap , even the bikes which I owned two cost me $560 each to build . cars on the other hand my uncle has already put 15 G's to the car , not including the new parts for the engine with triple chrome . and it is a 66 impala , things ain't cheap
