Dear martial arts fans and movie fans, in 1997 my dream came true when I was discovered by Jackie Chan to do the final fight in his movie 'Who am I ?' filmed on top of the Nedloyd Building in Rotterdam, Its a very controversial fight scene as besides the story of someone coming out of nowhere to fight Jackie Chan and made his dream happen, there's a documentary how difficult is was for me to keep up the timing with Jackie. -- I'm going to do a full breakdown of this event on the Vikingsamurai channel and here later as things not always are as people think. in short, to fight Jackie in a first movie ever is like doing a grand prix race after a few driving lessons.
The good thing is out of all of this, I had to restart my career and build from -0 , and my goal was to fight as much action stars as possible, never to let anything like this happen again. The underdog position kept the fire for all the years and this way I can help anyone who dreams of a career in the action movie business.. And that's what I do. let No ONE take away your dream or uncreate you - its like taking your life away ! Thats why I always say
Life is Action !
I created my own fighting style called RECHARGE and its getting more and more known and popular these days so Im vrey thankful. Life is literally to recharge yourself and channel all energiet to the right directions and in combination with knowing your purpose this van be very powerful,.
Greetings
Ron Smoorenburg

  • I've watched this fight scene tons of time since it came out in 98. I watched Jackie Chan's films religiously almost every weekend in Lima, Perú. The set up for Ron as a big boss is flawless with that leg stretch as the camera is panning out. Seconds later he throws off a flying kick followed by a dragons tail to the opposite direction to open up the fight!!!! That is VIDEOGAME STATUS. I've been in awe w that move since i was 12 and now my kids are too. My 3 year old just asked me "can we please watch the rooftop fight?"... I put it on... And then he starts shouting and throwing kicks! This still is probably one of the best (if not the best) fight in the history of movies.

  • I Love Jackie Chan, Brad Allen and Andy Cheng but I really am in awe of Ron Smoorenberg in this fight scene. I find it absolutely incredible that this is his first on screen fight and how well he does keeping up with the rhythm and adapting to Jackie's style, that in itself is an incredible feat, Way to absolutely rise to the occasion on Ron's part. You can really see how phenomenal his talents are all round. Those kicks are absolutely stunning, I remember when this came out on VHS in the 90s and just rewinding and watching this fight again and again and again. I think this is an absolute classic and is one of the best 90s Hong Kong fights scenes.

  • The best thing about Jackie from the 80s on is how messy his fights are. Not like IP man movies now. The way he and his team choreographed these fights made them look almost like a real street brawl. These guys are swinging what looks like wild punches. Hooks. Jabs....everything. The choreography is just incredible.

I have Who Am I on DVD and have watched just this fight so many times and yet I still can't help but be blown away by the choreography. I was in American TKD when I was in the Army but deployments and the injury of my back prevented me from going beyond Yellow belt. Herniated disks really reduced ones ability to twist and kick, and I hate it.

  • This was my favorite martial arts movie growing up. A lot of unique choreography in this rooftop scene. I also trained a year with a doublejointed martial artist and while it's not as much of an advantage as you might initially think it does change the way you have to approach a lot of techniques.

  • For one of Jackie Chan's best fight scenes of all time, I found it amusing that as far as the story went, these guys were two random henchmen (with incredible skill) that appear at the very end 😅. Ron Smoorenburg was downright amazing in this scene!

  • I seem to have seen a clip of an interview at that time (or maybe a documentary), and Jackie Chan seemed to have difficulty communicating with you on some stunts because of language problems. He was in a hurry, and it made people laugh. At the same time, many people are surprised that your leg work is so good and fast. At that time, I thought Europeans and Americans only knew boxing (lmao). I didn't expect to meet you on youtube today, so excited. Thank you for the wonderful performance and wish you a more wonderful life. love from a chinese fan.

  • Your legwork is fantastic, Ron. I never really appreciated what taekwondo could do with the right fighter. I mean, i always knew that the right fighter could be effective even if your style is mostly kicks, but I always saw it as a weakness/liability. Then I saw you and a couple of other guys who do mostly kicks and I realized I was wrong. You're great. I'm a 2nd degree black sash in Northern Longfist, a 1st dan black belt in Shotokan, and a 2nd kyu (2 belts below black) in Aikido. I just started Wing Chun which is mostly hands but I'm thinking once I get the hang of Wing Chun, I may start Taekwondo to work on my legwork. Great job in your films.
