Caste and untouchability owe their origins to brahmanical Hinduism, but aren’t restricted to the Hindu community. Caste oppression also exists in Christian and Muslim communities. But are the people at the intersection of caste and minority religion given their due rights?
In this two-part episode on What's Your Ism, Sudipto Mondal speaks to Ambedkarite author Shalin Maria Lawrence and sociologist-professor Khalid Aniz Ansari about the complexities of anti-caste politics.
In part one, Lawrence talks about Christians under British rule, reservation, Brahminism, and laws to protect the rights of Dalit Christian.
She says, “India is about whether you are Brahmin or not. And Tamil Nadu is about whether you are Dalit or non-Dalit. Religion is not a problem here. We did not convert to Christianity because we wanted to get away from caste, but because we wanted to get away from a system that called us untouchable.”

I don't see the discrimination about dalits in Catholic churches or cemeteries, a Catholic is a Catholic there is no dalit Catholic, so a Catholic might be poor due to his caste or economic situation in the past, but I am of the opinion that presently he is not a dalit anymore, so he or she might be economically backward and looked down due to his past caste status, how to help such people I am not sure of that unless there is a scheme or reservation for economically backward people who deserve the reservation
Why don't you allow intercaste marriage and they look for roman catholic Brahmin Christian when it comes to marriage
Did she just invent dalit Catholicism?! Here in Pune Bombay and all other cities, there are no tiered cemeteries. 36 years of my life and hearing this for the first time. Nowadays everything needs to be fact checked.
1816: For dealing with minor offences, the Company imposes on lower castes in Madras a barbaric form of punishment called ‘confinement in the stocks’. Because of the oppression of the caste system, they try to escape that through conversion
i dont know whats the relation between religion and caste. Does my economic status change if i accept christianity and follow christ? does my dna mutates to a forward caste dna?!! its moronic to say if a scheduled caste member accepts christianity, he'll no longer get a scheduled caste certificate. fudge these rules
Arey Bhai band Karo yeh drama..christians are Christians not dalits
To all the people confused about how there are dalit Christians when caste system is a practice in hindu religion. The truth is yes casteism exists in every religion in south asia specially india. Even the Islamists in india follows caste system (ashrafs and pasmandas) and majority of them are pasmandas in india. When y'all claim Christianity to be caste free, yes it is everywhere but not in india. Intercaste marriage doesn't happen easily or if you elope , it's high chance your family might kill you( honour killing cases).
Well it is what it is either you get reservation or status. The same person will proudly say I am a dalit until he/she reaps the benefits of reservation.
Why don't you allow intercaste marriage?
Lol they are discussing what Brits did insted of what BJP doing lol 😂😂😂😂😂 Is BJP wants to get rid of cast system .....
She is misrepresenting christianity. Christianity is not all about Catholics. There are thousands of Protestant churches and you don't find any caste discrimination in it. Sorry to say but Catholics are almost similar to Hinduism and traditions so therefore you might discrimination in them but it will be very minimal for sure.
Why don't other Christian allow intercaste marriage?
@@Kim-ej2xm they do. in our church intercaste marriage happens. feels like you generalized Christians imo. there might be a few caste supremacists but i wont consider them as christians. God doesnt judge based on caste so as followers of christ, the christians shouldnt too but if they are doing, then they are not following the teachings of christ so they just christians for the namesake.

Dalit Christians???!!! What Da??!!! Trying to make something out of nothing.... It's an idiotic talk. Dalit, untouchable these were a Hindu system. Leave those behind now, have education, and excel... Looks like you haven't come out of your old thoughts. Out of 70 % if only two Fathers are there then you people chose to be so. You are not barred. Just like you choose to be something else, not Nun Sister or Mother Teresa... I lived 25 years with these people in the Northeast and in West Bengal and Bihar never heard of Dalit Christians or Brahmin Christians... Kiya year Newslaundry...Ye hi mila... Ye hi raha gaya tha sunna baki...
