Leicester City are off to the worst start the Premier League has ever seen, with 7 losses in their opening 9 games. Brendan Rodgers faces intense pressure to turn things around at the King Power before they find themselves battling relegation for the season.
Last year they were Europa Conference League semi-finalists with a top half finish, Jamie Vardy and James Maddison also featured in the league's top goal scorers. So what exactly has changed for the Foxes?
Carl Anka joins us to discuss the problems growing at Leicester and just how they could be solved.

  • The Jamie Vardy downfall has really added to the poor form of Leicester. Daka was always going to take time, and was he ever going to replace the 20+ goals Vardy brought? Leicester are naturally falling to where abouts they should be. Midtable, pushing for top 10/conference league position. I think they will stay up (3 teams worse than them) and then next year we will see them level out with a big overhaul of squad and almost definitely under a new manager. Every team below 7th should just be modelling themselves on Brighton..

    @UkZzGAMEPLAYZZ@UkZzGAMEPLAYZZ Жыл бұрын
    • the funny thing is 2 years ago everyone was supposed to be modelling themselves on Leicester, a few years before that it was Southampton. Recruitment is very hit & miss. Leicester have a decent hit rate but got into problems because we over-recruited to cover European football & paid players at a European football level. When we need to get rid of these over-paid players because we don't have European football we can't find clubs to move them to who will pay for them & pay them at the same wage. So Rodgers won't play them, but Leicester are still paying them so can't buy anyone else who may fit in better.

  • One of the things that has killed Leicester's ability to counter press after losing the ball is that teams in the Premier League have splashed some huge cash on press resistant players. So pressing is no longer as effective as it used to be, I feel like the aggressive press was effective because it was still new and a lot of teams hadn't learned how to get around it bar the top teams in Europe. Nowadays a lot of teams in the Prem have got players that can play around pressing situations with relative ease and that's also another factor that I think needs to be considered. The tactical evolution of the league, as well as other top leagues in Europe is why teams like Leicester and Liverpool are struggling a bit, because the press was a huge part of their identity. I agree with most of the stuff you have said in this video, the content on this channel is always full of good insight, keep up the good work. 👊

  • The problem with Leicester is that Rodgers said he wanted to get rid of about 6 players and have a refresh after the Forest FA cup defeat. He probably told these players, or let it be known that he no longer wanted them at the club, but due to FFP or the club not being completely convinced of Rodgers summer refresh, he is now stuck with them. I can imagine if I worked for a business and my manager turned round to me and said: "I don't want you here, and your not good enough", then I think I wouldn't give 100%.

  • The problem is with the defence. LCFC's defenders are actually just average players who exceed expectations in a season or two, and then just rolls back down to their default settings. It can also be observed in their asking prices. Maguire had one or two good seasons and a good WC in 2018, so they asked 80m from Man Utd. It happened again with Soyuncu, when City were interested in him after a good season and they were ready to ask about 70m for him. Luckily for City, they realized it in time and went for Ruben Dias instead. This is also why most Chelsea fans were against the signing of Fofana, especially for that amount of money. Justin and Castagne looked sharp at the start but look at them now. With Schmeichel leaving, the defence became really exposed and Vardy's decline upfront isn't helping either. Still got quality midfielders like Madds and Tielemans though.

  • Good summary! One thing I would add, and it’s possible to Devine from numbers but hard to put a finger on what is that Leicester have this real inability to kill games off when in an objectively advantaged position (a man up or a goal up). I put it the case is that the players aren’t given the tools to bustle through games and it means they get frustrated and collapse when the effort of being purely technical doesn’t work.

You can see the players lack of motivation when they are playing. I feel there is some issues that we aren't made aware of with the owners. Also feel like they need a new manager to bring in some new ideas and energy. Also as an LFC fan we were not good at defending set pieces when Rodgers was the manager.

They have plenty of good quality attacking options but there's no one to press and get the ball to actually get the ideal situations which are ball dropping to Maddison/Tielemans and them picking a pass to a pacey striker on the break.
