the fact that she made this album for FUN is TERRIFYING
And it turned out to be her best work upto date.
right she did this FOR FUN??? Dying
Actually says a lot about artists who are better when they are enjoying what they do instead of wanting money and out of obligation
this COMMENT IS SO TRUE

The way that when Taylor curses she just surprises us even tho she is 30 yrs old

“It better be a wedding, not a funeral.” She says before the funeral song 😬
Yeah, I was afraid for her to proceed
I thought the same.
I knew this song would screw me and everyone up cause it's the fifth song 😭
Yeah, "My Tears Ricochet" is really good at funeral to be played. The emotions, the humming, the little anger you feel about the song, the atmosphere, it's really a very dark song.
everybody's discussing the love triangle but i think the most haunting thing about this album is the symbolism in mirrorball. the way she is singing to her fans and the GP, disguised like a love song, "spinning in my highest heels love, shining just for you". and then "i'm still trying everything to get you laughing / looking at me" is so sad considering she has reinvented herself over and over again so she doesn't lose her stardom. it is such a sad song and i'm upset not everybody is talking about it.
i instantly felt sad when i read about this in twitter and since then, mirrorball didn't mean the same to my anymore everytime i listen to it.
THANK YOU, I’m glad you said it
This was really something I didn't think about...
Exactly. She wrote a promise/anthem to the Swifties and they just skip right over it or think it’s about her bf. Smdh 🤦🏼♀️
isn't she also speaking to the audience in 'this is me trying' (i don't wanna say fans cus they would never drag her down like that and make her feel that way)

"were there clues I didn't see? there was an invisible string tying you to me"
I'm gonna keep on saying it that mature Taylor is the best taylor. This album can't be compared to her previous work, because it's so different. This album seems, not only a new era, but the opening to a new age. It is the first chapter of a new book. This album showcases that Taylor Swift is more than just a pop singer/songwriter, she is one of the greatest songwriters of this generation. She doesn't need her personal life to write songs, she can create vivid character arcs and tell from their perspectives. This is a monumental shift in Taylor's career, one which is also her best, and one which will give folk music a new found appreciation. This is Taylor's best album, FIGHT ME. Speak Now and Red adopted Safe and Sound, sent it to college, there it perfected the craft of storytelling and came back as Folklore.
It’s like if RED and speak now had a baby then shipped it off to get a literature degree
The way every artist from now on will be inspired to do folk sounds and genius storytelling like this. A decade opener in music by Taylor!
All true, but a the same time if/when she wants to revisit fun, fiery, big sounds then that's okay too. She's not obligated to make *everything* this deep, intimate, or emotional, it's just one of her many musical abilities that she's free to use or not use whenever the mood strikes her. And when she inevitably puts out something with "less" depth or "less" maturity, she shouldn't be dragged for it or labeled as a has been whose best stuff is behind her. (I say this because we saw people take this attitude after RED, and I'm thinking we'll see it ten fold now. The second she puts out something less intimate feeling everyone will flip the hell out about how she's """"turned shallow"""" and I'm already tired from All Too Well stans turning their noses up at 1989.)

IM DEAD 😂😂
i just love how taylor expects everyone to be fine when she put my tears ricochet right after exile
While some of these songs are 'charcter based' they all 100% intertwine with taylor's life and her emotions. My tears ricohet is about losing her master and ex-label president scott, invisble strings, peace and hoax are straight up her and joe, mad woman is also about scott/scotter, the last great american dynasty is about the story behind her Rhode Island house, this is me trying, seven and mirrorball are about her, illict affairs, the 1 and exile are part her part character, betty, august and cardigan are the love triangle but definitely have aspects of her life in it e.g august is a very similar story to cruel summer. It's very interesting unpacking the songs and how they relate to her life and even if they're not all necessarily from her perspective, there is so much of her in there.
YES, exactly!!!!!!!!
This album is so exhilaratingly complex. The more you listen, the farther. You fall down the magucal rabbit hole.
I hope hoax isn’t about joe...that wouldn’t be a good thing
I saw someone posted that the love triangle gives you should’ve said no vibes.
hoax is also about scott and losing her catalogue. this is me trying is about a recovering alcoholic. seven is about a seven year old who has a friend in a abusive household and the beauty, the naïveté and freedom of being a child.

the saddest song on this album is actually mirrorball. it may sound playful but really its about how a mirrorball is only pretty because it's been shattering a thousand times. the song is about always being in the spotlight and in my opinion it's the most beautiful symbolism on the entire album.
just 30 minutes of you having a meltdown and honestly... I relate
Betty’s perspective: Cardigan The other woman’s perspective: August James’s perspective: Betty Some have argued illicit affairs belongs in the trio. It could be an overview of the event as a whole but the three songs listed above have connected lyrics and details. August mentions summer love and James said it was just a “summer thing” to Betty. In August the character says “remember when I pulled up and set get in the car” just like James said happened in his song. Cardigan mentions walking on cobblestone in high heels just like in Betty, James walks on “broken cobblestones.” Betty and Cardigan both reference “cardigans.” Cardigan alludes to cheating, “chase two girls, lose the one,” and James coming to Betty’s porch in both Cardigan and Betty. There are probably more details that I missed and there are probably other songs in the album that are from the same characters’ perspectives
yesssss I see so many people on twitter pairing other songs but these three just make so much sense why would it be any other songs
Agreed, also 17 years olds having a summer flings isn't called illicit affair. Isn't illicit affair between a married person and someone outside the marriage ?

Jack said that “my tears ricochet” and “august” were his favorite songs they’ve ever done together.
Okay, okay, okay. Here's the thing with, "my tears richocet,"... Am I the only one who thought about the drama with her old label and Scooter? "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace," which she didn't, she spoke the hell out about it every single step of the way. "You know I didn't want to have to haunt you, but what a ghostly scene." She didn't wanna do anything she did but she was forced and look at the shit show that happened afterwards. "And when you can't sleep at night, you hear my stolen lullabies," self explanatory, about her songs that were given to him against her will, basically stolen. Almost every lyric can be traced back to that situation. Like, maybe I'm reaching but you can't convince me it's not about her old label and Scooter.
Oh I sobbed at epiphany “hold your hands in plastic now…. Doc I think she’s crashing out…. Some things you can’t speak about” makes me SOBBBB
when she was listening to Betty and said "that sounds pretty gay"... that was all of us hunny
My tears ricochet is actually about her masters. She talks about her albums as jewels, which were taken from her by Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta, which is why she says they bury her (her leaving the label, which she refers to as the home she can't go back to in the song.) She also talks about how hating her Brough Bruan and Borchetta together. The tears ricochet metaphor is that by screwing her over and hurting her they ended up hurting themselves too. Which is why she talks about Borchetta showing up to her wake cursing her name.
I don't know why people saying its about scooter and scott BOTH. She said that it was a betrayal because she always hated Scooter. "I loved you, I swear I loved you", "crossing out the good years". It's not about Scooter at all. Its about Scott/the label. And about their relationship and how much she was hurt. I also felt like the line "I didnt have it in myself to go with grace" showed that she maybe also wished she handled it a bit differently herself. The song is a bit angry but mainly very sad. Part of her wished it went differently.
On instagram Taylor said one song is from "an embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession" which is what "my tears ricochet" is about. The whole song is not about Scott or Scooter, maybe the line "my stollen lullabies" is a reference to that situation, but the whole song is about someone else
"You wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me" JEWELS = HER MASTERS.
@@euphoriapotion2075 the whole song fits her fight against her label though. I got the impression that she was referring to imagery (I.e. It's about a funeral, but it symbolises her death at big machine). There's plenty of lyrics that fit Scott perfectly, too perfectly that it can't be loosely based on something
This is an excellent excellent point I never even thought about. Also y’all she NEVER directly says what or who her songs are about, it’s always vague because she wants the songs to be heard as they are. 100% could be about the scooter/Scott bullshit

No one: Taylor: curses in 𝓪𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓽𝓲𝓬
The last great American dynasty is about Rebekah Harkness she was married to a rich guy who made his money from his oil company. The woman became mad in the public eye and I think eventually killed herself. Taylor bought her house and she felt a connection and so she wrote about her.
She didn't kill herself she get sick and died
Rebekah didn't kill herself but I'm pretty sure her daughter did, the entire family went through some really sad shit
I think she also references her in her song The Lucky One but that's just my guess
@@louise4778 She references famous porn star Joni Mitchell in The Lucky One.
@@someoneelse4579 sorry if you're joking but you know Joni Mitchell is a singer right?
this intro is chaotic but it’s exactly how i felt when i saw taylor tweet about the album
If you're new: I hate her ughhh = I love taylor and all of her music
Thank you for the kind information
I didnt listen to Taylor's past songs but i didnt hate or disliked her
Ashley: How did you guys listen to this all the way through and not die? Us: We didn't :,(
Oh yes we are dead
HAha true, who ever could listen to it one sitting. So emotional.
Ashley: this song is 5 minutes long?? Also Ashley: wait is it over already?!?!
Interesting fact: Rebekah Harkness used to go by the name Betty. I have a theory that Taylor, stuck at Rebekah’s house during quarantine, made up folklore, and made up a love story about Rebekah during high school. The way this woman’s mind works I mean-
I’m so glad that you go through the theories and analyse the lyrics. Whenever I listen to music, my dumbass never picks up on the story and just bops to it. With this album I just laid in bed and stared at the ceiling listening. This album is a literal masterpiece
can we talk about how in mirrorball she, a world famous popstar, sings "i'm a mirrorball, i can change everything about me to fit in," "i've never been a natural, all i do is try, try, try" and "i'm still doing everything to keep you looking at me" like w t f my heart is breaking and my mind has long been shattered it's so powerful
I hadn't thought of it like that! That is such a good fit!
Imagine the pressure she must feel all the time 🥺
i see what you did here. we are decapitalising everything.
@@danielphung6146 I typed it on a computer that didn't autocorrect me and i was too lazy to fix it lmao
@@louise4778 you actually inspired me lol, any convo concerning folklore was typed in lower-case.
The way Sophie’s baby girl was announced today and she talked about her was the biggest coincidence
I think the stood on a Cliffside lyric is about having suicidal thoughts-
Me too, more specifically I think the lyric is about contemplating suicide and being pushed to the edge by the person you care about most. That’s how I interpret it
Invisible string is just such a freaking beautiful song. Invisible string pulling strangers together and they become lovers. Just like Joe and Taylor.
I love how she said "Lesbians won" before she had listened to betty
But Betty isn’t a lesbian story it’s a 1 of 3 parts to a love triangle
@@joba858 pretty sure everyone knows that at this point. just let them have this 😅
@@joba858 but james is literally a girl
@@joba858 omg we know this already.. just let the lesbians have this 😭
Betty takes place in James’s perspective

"because hello miss americana (and the heartbreak prince) best song. bye" TASTE.
Cottage core aesthetic is the perfect description of this album. Every song fits it perfectly.
But honestly how does nobody appreciate seven 😱 the lyric "i've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted. Your dad is always mad and that must be why" THAT SHIT hits so close to home. Like she is speaking to my childhood me. Such a hurting but healing Song 🥺☁️🦋
it reminds me of a childhood friend, and the nostalgia just hit me over the head? seriously yikes 🥺
@@akacozymint yeah right? And like for me wishing I had this childhood friend who would escape from reality with me.
She said bitch I gotchu!
@@kamallb4650 so true. I have never in my life cried so hard and felt so comforted at the same time 🌱
Seven is one of the best songs in the album. Definitely in my top 3
"she's making me think of someone i don't want to think about" ME LISTENING TO AUGUST :/
I really don't think illicit affairs belong to the love triangle series and here is why: cardigan, august and betty are all so clearly about teenage love, august already is from the "other girl's" perspective and it says it was a summer love and so does betty, cardigan has a lot of connections lyrically to betty, while illicit affairs is very dark and mature like an adult having an affair talking about having to meet in weird places what a summer love thing wouldn't have to be like
But heartbreak ages you no? Augustine isn't that little girl in love who believes in happily ever afters. I think illicit affairs was Augustine in the future thinking about her true love James. It's been some time but she still hasn't gotten over it. :( she deserved so much more
The lyric “bad was the blood, of the song, in the cab, on your first trip to LA” obviously referencing Bad Blood
Ash: "We gather here"? It better be a wedding and not a funeral... Me: Umm... I think you forgot the Track 5 tradition-
What’s the tradition ? ( I’m a newbie to Taylor )
@@lucascubells4054 the track 5 is always the most emotional and personal song in the album :)
but what about All You Had To Do Was Stay? :/ i would say that This Love is the most emotional one from 1989
@@francisco5601 out of the standard album, this love is from the deluxe version
@@francisco5601 Put the lyrics out off the upbeat production and you'll be left with some touching lyrics about someone leaving you and when you're finally getting over it, that person wants to come back. "All you had to do was stay, I was a mess when you left me but now that you want to come back it's too late".
