Hippos Save Wildebeest from Crocodiles!

Incredible footage showing some rare interactions, captured on a safari with Chasin' Africa Safaris (Book with them here: bit.ly/ChasinAfrica) at one of the top dams in Kruger, Gezanftombi Dam, near Crocodile Bridge.
Chase told Latestsightings.com of this ordeal: “We stopped to watch all the animals come down to drink and saw a cool heron surfing on the back of a hippo, it was an enjoyable sight having all the different species around.
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
An unsuspecting group of wildebeest sauntered down to the water’s edge for a drink when a huge crocodile jumped right out and immediately grabbed one of the wildebeest, keeping its jaws locked on the animals head. Next moment another croc raced in to try and get something off the menu. The hippos close by seemed to be very perturbed by what was happening and it looked for a moment as if they also wanted to join in on this kill. They kept the wildebeest surrounded and it all looked like a pretty hopeless situation.
The wildebeest was obviously exhausted and it seemed as if the hippos sensed its fear of the whole ordeal. They calmly kept close by to wildebeest but he seemed to have spooked and picked up a second wind changing direction and seeking another escape route. The hippos followed until he reached the shore and managed to get himself out of the water but his back foot was completely injured and one could not help but wonder what his final outcome would be if with the damage he endured.
It was exciting to watch in the beginning but then a deep sense of sadness overcame everyone. Nature can be cruel but the circle of life must go on”.

I just think the hippos were pissed off that the Crocs were causing a commotion around them, and they were like "get the hell away from me".. so they started snapping at the Crocs, and the Crocs are naturally afraid of the hippos per se, because they tolerate each other, they don't particularly like each other, and the Crocs know that the hippos can bite them in half if they really wanted to, and so the Crocs saw that the hippos were getting pissed off, thus they backed away...P.S that wildebeest wouldn't last 24 hours with that Broken Wheel..

  • This is a fascinating sighting for quite a few reasons..you see the wildebeest go to drink with the hippos standing quietly on the opposite bank..you think the same here as the wildebeest are drinking but the peace is shattered by the sudden eruption out of the water by the croc to grab the wildebeest by its head..then another coming in for the kill:it's a total frenzy and the wildebeest was so lucky to escape those jaws and their death roll..the commotion brought the hippos and they're very territorial;if you watch closely you can see the crocs have no space to drag the wildebeest under;they are totally surrounded by very angry hippos;and that wildebeest lived to limp another day..the sad thing is,is that it will probably be another predator's meal with a limp like that.Excellent filming to capture this sighting so well and another top-class upload~

    • Alberto Bazan they have the most powerful bite as well if any animal. Furthermore, they rotate their body when they bite so if the prey gets out they won't know which way is up or down and be very giddy. If it weren't for the territorial hippos the beast was never getting out but it's doomed with that injury

    • To imagine this was the start of The Great Wildebeest Revolution before full blown war broke out, the start of a golden age soon stained red with the blood of slaughtered crocs across the land, the start of the great African Massacre in which the prey became the predators and completely flipped the food chain. You see this? This is the beginning of a huge segment of history, one that fills all with a sense of regret and loss as they realise how simple it was, and how easily they could’ve stopped it. Most of all the hippos fill themselves with regret and dissatisfaction with their nature, the mistakes it led them to make and the horrors they were soon to face due to their misguided judgements. As my world crumbles around me, and my roof does it’s last moaning creak, I can’t help but look back at this time and wish, desperately wish for something to change, for history to realign itself with my past self’s skewed sense of reality. But alas, as the dust falls and the room begins to cave in, the beests standing by to watch the destruction with heartless eyes, I remember my reality and force the dissatisfaction down. To make room for acceptance
