  • This is what I like about AMD. They will take time out of their day to make videos like this while you don't see intel making videos about their architecture. On top of that, this isn't an ad-based video, it is a true video about their new architecture. I really appreciate that.

And now, they're leveraging the two together with things like SAM to eek out performance that can't be achieved with any combo of Intel and Nvidia. The 10700 for 300$ is still dam good value which eats a 3700X in gaming alive. The competing 5000 part will cost more, so this time AMD will be the more expensive one for the same performance. The B550 chipset is already prices same as Z490, which is ridiculous. Not to mention heat, the 10th gen intels run around 30C cooler on average while being faster, that is a huge thing.

    • @@zeus1117 AMD's processor that competes with the 10700*K* is the 5600X and so far it seems like it was available for cheaper than both 10700 versions at only 330% vs 370-410$ on Intel's side, and for some people it won't even be necessary to change their motherboard. Yes, you do lose a bit of productivity in comparisson, but that comes from losing in the core count since you're putting a Ryzen 6 vs an I7 that's more evenly matched against the Ryzen 7 5800X, yes, the AMD part is more expensive, but to fully compare AMD and Intel dollar by dollar we have to see what Intel presents by the end of the year (I don't remember their release date, might be next year) And see how they price their options. Oh and it seems like the 5800X dominates the 10700k in every aspect, benchmarks, gaming and productivity without increasing power consumption compared to the 3800X. I was waiting for a release like this since the first generation of Ryzen, I was not ready to let go of my not old back then 6700K that's been serving me well for a while but I wanted to see AMD matching or beating Intel in single threaded performance across the board, that and the new tech that AMD is pushing out with this release really make me wanna buy now instead of only recommending their low end up to the Ryzen 6 processors, already been setting myself up to buy a 3950X but wanted to wait for this release, and the 5950X looks pretty damn good. I don't hate Intel though, I really want to see them blowing our minds coming back to compete head to head with AMD but I don't think this refresh is the one when that'll happen, that seems more like a late 2021 kind of thing.

    • Diego Ignacio Falcone I’m not particularly versed with the technicalities of hardware, and I could be completely wrong with my input, but I believe that it’s almost like a cache communication dialogue switch between the CPU and GPU depending on the requirement of the power draw at a specific moment that’s more GPU intensive or CPU intensive (utilizing Smart Shift technology, which is also implemented in the PS5 and upcoming AMD laptops). This allows for the so-called “Infinity Cache,” because the communication is so efficient that cache can be redirected across multiples dies instantaneously when it is necessitated more so by one die, and memory subsequently won’t need to be overloaded if it’s unnecessary. Again, I could be completely wrong, as I’m trying to do more research on this topic as an unfortunately non-technical individual, but I hope this makes a bit more sense from this potential perspective.

  • So for the 5900X, do you have two dies in the package with only 6 active cores per package? If that is the case, I wonder what the performance between the 5800X where all cores in one die vs. both the 5900X and 5950X as they will have two dies and need to communicate between those as well as the cores themselves (for games that won't use more than 8 cores).

    @Alexandra-Rex@Alexandra-Rex3 жыл бұрын
    • EDIT: Guess I was wrong. It's way more likely they will pair two CCXs with the same amount of active cores, so, 6+6 for the 5900X. AFAIK, the Ryzen 9s still have one full 8 core CCX and an extra CCX with up to 8 cores. If you get the 5900X it will have an extra lower bin 8 core CCX with 4 cores disabled, but the 5950X will have two full 8 core CCXs. Now I'd say it's safe to assume the CPUs with two CCXs will have to use the IOD to communicate, but that hasn't been an issue for applications that require a lot of cores anyways, proven by Ryzen Zen 2.

      @nismo97@nismo973 жыл бұрын
    • No game needs 12 cores. You could probably assign it to just one of the dies (6 or 8 cores in a single CCD) in Windows scheduler just like Linus did during his Zen 2 review. This would eliminate any performance bottlenecks from inter-core latency in this game.

      @dexter2392@dexter23923 жыл бұрын
    • I was thinking the same thing - and then at what point do you stop? If it's more efficient to just have all cores together, don't you eventually end up full circle to old design?

      @hoff521@hoff5213 жыл бұрын
    • You still get a lot of benefit. The core 2 core latency matters only during a L3 cache miss when the data exists in a "sibling" L3 cache. If you have a cache hit, you never leave the CCD so there is no impact. If the data is not in any cache at all, you have to wait for the RAM like always. You want as much useful data in your L3 cache as possible, because those cache misses are pretty much the worst thing that can happen for performance. If you evenly spread out the cores over CCDs, each core has more L3 cache to work with compared to having more cores on a single CCD. So while you may have a little bit more overhead when threads are moved between cores, if they actually keep running on the core for a little while they will actually tend to be a little faster than the "crowded" cores because they don't have to compete with as many other cores for the cache. So if you have a scheduler which knows about the cost of moving threads to a different CCD, spreading out the cores should improve performance. Ryzen/Threadripper/Epyc has been out for long enough that an up-to-date OS has a scheduler that knows how to handle that. So having 2 6 core CCDs should be a net benefit in pretty much all cases.

      @Niosus@Niosus3 жыл бұрын

So wouldnt it make more sense to just Describe the 5000 Series processors as Zen 2 + since the Zen 3 is fabricated on the same 7 nanometer MOSFET as Zen 2. Just like Zen, Zen + It would be more accurate to name zen 3 Zen 2+ as Zen 3 is just a minor incremental architecture enhancement. Kudos to AMD for continuing to innovate and push the competition is certainly a Win, Win for consumers.

A marketing director talks in a way where the complicated matter can be understood by as many of target audience as possible. In the case of consumer-oriented Ryzen chips, you get this video. If you worked data center and were looking at Epyc chips, well, this is going to be more in-depth but we wont see that unless we're dc people.
