  • "The first 3 strike you attack is his kidney, liver and his chin. If he's not going down, just run." That's the efficiency of silat. Only enemy's first punch needed, you counter it with a decisive blows in vital area, making sure your enemy will not getting up anymore. But if your blitz counter didn't do shit to him, just run away, as he said.

    • Agree. It’s not worth expending too much of your energy to subdue an attacker if he won’t go down in the first three strikes. Especially if the attacker is bigger than you. At the very least withdrawing will help you reset and prepare a different strategy should your attacker chase after you.

  • I remember them days of being the teachers demonstration partner. You get the crap kicked out of you. And it’s your job to make your teacher look good. And if he makes accidental contact, to play it off. It made me a lot better at my art because of it. It taught me how to take hits, locks, chokes and throws. So when I did have to use my art to defend myself. I understood what was coming and didn’t fear it. It also taught me humility and meekness as well. When you see the teacher in whatever art, use a particular guy in his class. That’s the dude you want to get next too. He might not be the best fighter. But he’s usually the second best teacher with pointers to make your art even better. I love this teacher. Reminds me of my own Arnis teacher.

    • As a Sandan (3rd Dan), in Aikido with an extensive back ground in multiple forms of street defense, over 30 years, including the highly respected Solar, i'm till questioning most of these knife attack defenses I see on the internet... Not one would work on the street... First, you won't have the chance to square off in a knife attackand, (extremely rare)... Second, the attacker, (Uke), will have a death grip on that knife and it will be almost impossible to snap or flick or remove the knife from his hand, or grab the knife arm of the attacker, (many instructors teach the double hand flick), which will guarantee three things... 1). Most of the flesh will be cut from your hand or arm, 2). You will start going into shock, and 3). If the Uke chooses, will then proceed to stab you very vigorously... multiple times... to death... instructor So go ahead my friends, try that or most any of these fancy Hollywood fantasy knife defenses on a seasoned street fighter or a knife wielding pro out to rob or kill you...Only luck in a hospital bed will enable you to let us know how these techniques worked for you.

I think even the prodigal Bruce Lee would have appreciated its merits, if he have had the chance to know more about it. Silat is definitely among my top favorite martial art systems. My own way of fighting is similar, but more Taijutsu inspired. Seemingly, the founders and developers of both systems worked with similar realities and came with similar solutions. • Think the style my teacher taught was called gengden silat from the bugis region not sure of the spelling. Its were the legend of the bogey man comes from. When the british were colanising Indonesia they ran into this group who slaughtered them with thier form of silat. Its also known to be used by the royal body gaurds of the region.Hence the british soldier ran off shouting "the bogey men are coming" .Hence the saying.Interesting stuff.

    • Fighting is getting them on their ass, hopefully breaking their skull, before having to pound their face in! Mma girls know this and any man , including this joker, would be in big trouble against a gal in mma

    • @@tjworker5482 Yeah, I remember seeing posts like your on Bullshido during the day, where they all got together to wear camo shorts, grow goatee beards and shit on the trad martial arts. Problem with your comment here is Silat train "live" from day 1 and most learn to fight full contact with actual blades BEFORE they go on to apply the techniques to hand-to-hand combat. I'll grant you an MMA fighter would beat someone like this guy in an MMA competition, but in actual no rules no referee combat, my money would be on a skilled Silat practicioner. Most of them are the real deal and have years of training against resisting/avoiding opponents under their belts, not like those aikido masters, white eyebrow kung fu and all that other crap that the Gracies used to beat up on in order to sell their BJJ style.

    • And don't forget, a lot of Pendekar (Sifu/Master/Martial Artists) in some Asian countries especially in Indonesia, they have special capabilities, they call it KEBAL meaning no weapon or gun can scratch their skin. You may search Kebal, Kebal Peluru, Kebal Senjata on YT to see them for yourself.

    • He practiced a different school of silat, but all in all they're pretty much the same, less power uses but to cause max damage, in reality u wouldnt last long in a fight, even professional boxing/mma fight have rounds so u can catch a breath, not in real life though

    • yes, but Iko's school is an Indonesian style that combines several prominent styles from Indonesia.

  • i think i just realized something many don't understand myself included and that is that blocks WORKS in a street fight but not in the ring! thats why many sport fighters scoffs at blocks or block training... cuz a street fight doesnt last an average of 4-6 minutes, its probably over after 30-45 seconds !!!
