I was about to give up on this engine until Tim reached out to me and solved my problem. Huge thanks to him and his team! Make sure to check the service bulletin 22-NA-027 to see if your vehicle may be effected. This video is based mostly off my opinion and experience with this truck. This doesn't speak for everyone else experience with their truck. Burned 2 qts of oil in 1200 miles while towing 9000lbs. There will be more of these videos to come, so make sure you subscribe so you can follow along. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much I just bought a 2024 LZ0 Jan, made October 2023 I will be contacting my dealer Def issue while towing and drove 3000 miles ans lost a litre which was weird I’m a quick lubw owner in Canada
Tim is what you call a good human being .
Right!
Thanks, appreciate it
Good thing this didn't happen on a gasoline engine with catalytic coverter(s) We need more guys like these to dig and post the answer, contrary to the usual ignorance or dumb like a fox answers with service depts.
Tim is what GM needs a person that truly cares about the customer.
Sounds like Tim Needs a GM Mark of Excellence award!
Tim is probably GMs most valuable employee
Id say so
Gracias amigo
This world needs more Tim’s helping each other
I agree. Tim is top notch!
@waynelutteroty5332 - I 100% agree.
N- As in Nipple, A- As in areola lol. That's worth a like in itself!!
So where are all the haters now??? Awesome freaking job and TIM, you rock dude!!!!
Theyre probably checking the serial number on their camshaft housing. Tim is the man!
Thanks Doug
We are still here....😂
This is a manufacturing issue, not a design issue. When its made correctly it works. Often it's difficult to determine which one it is, but thanks to Tim !
My Sierra is scheduled for this service bulletin on Monday. My local dealer did not know about the service bulletin. I have complained about the high oil consumption and high DEF useage to no avail. My son looked up the service bulletin and your info is spot on. Great information for the 3.0 guys.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. I can only take credit for putting the video together. Tim was my savior that found the issue. Good luck with the repair.
Tim is great, but you are great also, you dont have to do all this for strangers, awesome,
@@patricklavictoire3235 thanks Patrick, i appreciate that.
How do you know it consumes more oil than usual? Does the cat throw a message that oil is low
@@tarassarapin i just check the oil often. I noticed it was consuming it at a faster than normal rate so i started tracking it.
We need more Tims in the industry!
The world needs more Tims!!!!!
There needs to be more people in the world like Tim
Glad you got it figured out. We need more service guys like Tim who care enough to dig in a bit and figure the issue out. I have two 3.0L, an LM2 and LZ0. Both have been incredible powertrains.
How’s your LZ0 doing with oil?
@@christianflores6626 great, it used to be a little oil but not bad enough to add any between changes. The truck now has 33k miles on it. Our LM2 has 8000 miles on it. I absolutely love driving both. Oddly enough, I prefer the LM2 because the torque converter engages soon. The LZO slips the torque converter more revving the engine slightly more.
Kyle, FINALLY! There is a person that really gives a shit ! Kudos to Tim the Tech!
I bet if Tim were in charge there wow be no AFM or DFM on the gas motors. Thank you both for the info, seriously looking at the 3.0.
I crossed the duramax 3l off my list because of these issues maybe I will re consider a new one
I don't think you would have ever had fixed this without have your channel. Great networking and video.
I agree 100%. It was a pretty frustrating issue.
Exactly, I’m a gm loyalist and I really want one of these. But I’ve been researching and looks like LZO has similar issues. With my usual luck I would get one with consumption issue. Looks like you have to have a KZhead channel to get help and draw attention to issue. I don’t have a channel so I’m afraid to roll the dice and get one. Thanks for sharing and glad you got yours fixed!
Dude, that's so awesome! Thanks Tim for going above and beyond, and reaching out to Kyle.
Thanks buddy! Couldnt have done it without Tim. Great guy!
Love that Tim helped you out and that you shut up all the guys running their mouths. It took me about 2 min of the first video I saw of yours to know that you are extremely detailed, extremely smart and extremely funny so your subject matter always interests me because I KNOW I will learn something and get a few laughs.
Thanks, i appreciate that. I never would have guessed the community base and friendships that would come out of this channel. Its been very rewarding for me to share what i know and learn from everyone viewing and commenting. Good stuff!
Noticed the dip stick is low on this change interval called the dealer and referenced the bulletin but nothing came up. Hopefully when I take it in they'll look closely since the glow plug was previously replaced. Glad you made this video.
Dealership in Reno tried to charge me for oil change and wanted consumption analysis every 500 miles rather than just check for the bulletin and number. Pretty ridiculous
@goquickandiamo its seems to be more common than not unfortunately. Hopefully another dealer will be more willing to work with you
@@SpicerDesignsLLC we'll see not many choices in Reno. For now going to change the oil and monitor myself
I solved the oil consumption on the 3.0 duramax in my fleet by replacing that 0w20 crap with 0w40 rotella T6. Hasnt been losing oil ever since. Running good. Hopefully the aftermarket upgrades the oil pump belt with a chain or gear system. Good video man.
Spencer, reached out in response to my comment from the hate video. If you had led with the problems and wasn't such a hater of the 3.0. Very offensive. I appreciate the info provided by you about the tsb. You know as well as I do that a dealer will never never reach out. Good job in sharing. I love my 3.0 and the only thing I would do with mine is buy the 2024. If I have offended you in any way, I apologize for my comment. Best of luck with your 2020.
I appreciate that. Not offended. Ive received a lot of backlash from that original video but it led to the repair which ended up helping a lot of people. Some that didnt know they had an issue. My addressing issues with a vehicle should never be takin personally. No reason for it to be offensive.
I have noticed owners complaining about oil consumption Now we know why Thank you very much for this information
Thanks for sharing and big thanks to Tim for helping all of us out!!!!
I had a similar dealership experience with my Tacoma 4x4. It had vibration at certain speed. Dealer said, they all do that. Well, I found a TSB from Toyota that says if customer is experiencing vibration in front differential at this speed, there is a worn bushing in drivers side axle shaft. Once I showed them that, it was repaired under warranty. Thank goodness for the Internet. Thanks for the vids, even truck ones. Randy
On the flip side. Warehouse managers jeep grand cherokee kept throwing all kinds of codes after stalling in traffic. He took it to Elk Grove Dodge and Jeep twice. It died the first time ten minutes after he got it back. I looked on internet and found several videos on a common ecm connectivity issue. He took it back to Elk Grove Jeep and told them what to fix. The service guy said they had to send it out to get the crap connections re-soldered. He had already shot the parts cannon at the POS. Never went back to Elk Grove Jeep again. Yes the internet has reshaped repair procedures.
Is it around 80 kilometers
What speed and model year? Mine is a 17 OR with 150k miles. I'm just now getting a vibration at 18-30/40 mph. Thought maybe torque converter. Took it into dealer 4 days ago and they said I need an entirely new transmission. 😑
yes, HUGE props to that guy in MA !!!! way out of the normal wheelhouse !!!
Thanks for the update! Glad you got it fixed!
I knew something had to be wrong with that thing. Good job Tim and company !
"Tim for the Win" that's a t-shirt right there!
Go TIM and his TEAM. Enjoy your channel and glad you took the time to make this video and hopefully help out those folks that have the same issue. KUDOS
Really great to see there are people like TIM and his team that went the extra step(s) to search out and fix the issue. Confidence builder for sure for Chevrolet…
Very interesting, kudo's to Tim and his team for helping get to the bottom of your problem. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to hear you got it resolved. Yeah, no one should have to deal with 'leakage' at that young of an age. 👍 🍻
Great video and sounds like Tim actually cares. Thanks for sharing!
Tim was just doing his job. Tim shines because so many people in the auto repair field are abjectly incompetent.
I agree….but Tim did go above and beyond to help me out. Too notch
Watched the video because I’m a Chevy truck guy. New subscriber because of the boob references. Well done.
Hah! Thanks for the sub Jim
Awesome video, thanks for sharing and special thanks to Tim.
I've had the same issue for a while on my 2020 Sierra AT4 with 45,000mi. I'm gonna climb in there now and check the serial number on that part and will let you know. I don't know what Spicer Designs does so I'm gonna watch a couple videos. Nice detective work bro! I'm almost hoping I have the defective part now. I w.as just going to watch an oil change video because this will be the first time I've done it on this truck, I usually pay the way overpriced dealership charge, we're headed to the dunes next week. I know, TMI, thanks again brother! Joe in Oregon City OR, NOT PORTLAND. Even though it's close, we're normal here! so keep someplace else weird ya freaks!
I am actually a fortunate owner of a 21 that’s “consuming” oil. I will definitely be checking the camshaft cover number and I think I know what I will find. Big shout out to Tim and thanks for posting this update!
Hopefully thats the issue and you can get it resolved. Its a pretty frustrating issue
Well done video and many thanks to Tim! I wish GM would take note.
Just did the first oil change on my LM2 2023 Suburban. 1500 miles on it. Usually change the oil on a new engine at 1000 to 1500 miles just for piece of mind. Oil on the dip stick did not appear to move from when I purchased it with 20 miles on it. DEF is still 3/4 full. Was a little nervous purchasing my first GM product from owning Toyotas all my life but so far, the family loved the Suburban. 30mpg highway is pretty amazing as well.
Thats good. Fyi they do add an extra quart in the duramax for the break in. If you look it up you can get a better explanation on why they do it. The LZ0 is a better motor for sure.
@@SpicerDesignsLLC you are correct. I remember checking the dipstick the day I purchased it. The oil read slightly above the full mark. Wish I could have waited for the 2025 Suburban and the LZ0.
@@7THxSIGN i didnt realize the suburbans had Lm2’s in 2023. The 2023 trucks have the LZ0.
@@SpicerDesignsLLCyeah unfortunately the 2023 and 2024 Tahoe/Suburban kept the LM2. They will both get the LZ0 for 2025 with a mid gen refresh. Maybe it’s a GM marketing strategy lol.
Very good. I was literally going out to buy a 2020 in 2 hours. So you saved me a large headache. thanks again.
That’s interesting man that’s a good video for folks and Tim Way to go man. Great job.
Thank you for your videos. I'm looking to replace my Ford F150 with a 2024 GMC Sierra 3.0 Duramax and I was concerned about the Oil Consumption issue. Now I feel at ease with that purchase.
Good luck with your purchase
Thanks guys, this will No doubt help a bunch of folks with similar issues. And reminds me of the old adage to always avoid the first year of a new engine/vehicle so they can work out the bugs.
Darn it, now I need to go check that ###.
Just bought a 2024 yesterday Thanks for making the video 👍🏼
Congrats!
That's some awesome research by Tim and team. I always feel like dealership service managers should have that type of commitment to determining a problem - especially if there are service bulletins that pertain to the issue! Great update on the problem.
Just got my bulletin from GM this week to let me know about this possible problem on my Chevy. Thanks to you guys!
Been shopping for a 3.0 max to scratch that middle ground itch. No joke crossed it off my list after your oil burning video. Thanks to Tim and this follow up I’m on the hunt again. Appreciate it.
Good luck with your search. I would recommend the LZ0
Respect for Tim.
This is a super helpful video. Lots of videos on the oil issue but no one explained why until now.
Thats great. Hopefully it helps some people out.
Very informative glad you made this video to help others
Nice! Great find! Very informational. Tim is an awesome REP form GM. Looking into to the LZ0 to go with my LMM.
Thank you guys so much for sharing this video!!! just confirmed at the dealer today that my truck has the same bad part. Because of your video o was able to streamline the troubleshooting and show the techs where to check the serial number. I’ve been experiencing oil consumption and DEF issues for the last year, especially when towing. Two days ago, I start my truck to another check engine light, but this time there was an “emissions system service” message, and a banner that said my speed would be restricted in 175 miles. I immediately went to research mode and found this video ! You did a great service for our community, big thanks to “Tim”, and thank you for sharing!!!
Glad it was helpful and good luck with the repair!
I work at a GMC dealer. We have known about this issue for just over 2 years now. We hear a lot about other GM dealers around us that just dont care about customers. Luckily our managers want us to dig in and back us getting paid to try and fix an issue.
Thats awesome. I wish all dealers were like yours and Tims. Especially with how much vehicles cost these days. Thanks for sharing
You know of any good dealers in SE WI. Before I start this process I would like to align with one that is good to work with.
I do not. Im in Arizona
Glad you got it resolved because it’s a nice truck. Also good job sharing the info should help out others.☮️
Thank you. Hopefully it does help someone out.
Thanks Tim!!! And thank you!!
That is awesome that your truck is fixed
Ya im pretty pumped about it
Great video. Glad the word is getting out to help others owners of these amazing engines. 💪😎
Thanks for sharing this. I have a 2020. I’m not experiencing these problems but it’s great information to have incase I do later.
It shouldn't have been that difficult, some dealerships suck
mine been in the shop for 4 weeks, and now they say it's the valve body which is highly unlikely , there's just a squeal that is noticeable most of the time if you have it in park and hit the gas
@@AmazonWebService98 I used to work at a dealership, and I know some of the 10 speeds do have noisy fluid pumps, and the 10 speeds are notorious for valve bodies going out, but that still should not be the cause for the squeal.
Apparently, harder than ya think. This motor is NOT new. It has been used in Europe for a few years in their cab overs. Chevy as a whole apparently wasnt aware until it arrived here. Or something is different here. Maybe thanks to our admissions over here. idk. I dont think it was a dealership issue as much as a Chevy issue.
@@philliporne2287just went to TN solid 2,000 miles it runs super good 30+ mpg consistently i am going to drop it off this weekend and have the dealer where i bought it look at it, I love the truck and besides that no issues, but it will deff be gone before warranty
@@MsAce0424 Europe has emissions too man its not just American im am sure eu had it first
Excellent info, thanks for sharing! 🍻 Kudos to Tim! I think GM should hear about his above and beyond effort!
Thanks Chris! Tim saved me on this one.
Best video ever very useful information. Glad you were able to get it sorted.
Good video information! I’m a diesel mechanic myself and work on big rigs. Burning oil is bad but it’s even worse when you have emissions on diesels. Oil does not burn out of dpfs through a regen. Hoping it does not shorten the life of the dpf for you. And if it does hope it’ll be under warranty! If not delete time lol
Had same exact issue on the 2020 i had, would eat oil about the sane rate as yours. Had glow plug replaced and after it had electronic issues...I traded it in because it too 2 months for the last repair. You are 100% correct.
Great video! I usually watch all your regular videos, but I have the exact same truck and motor and this was hugely beneficial for me! Thanks for doing what you do. Keep up the good work man!
Thanks buddy! Hopefully yours is not effected by this.
@@SpicerDesignsLLC I’ll be checking.
Glad you got your truck repaired.
Thanks Bob!
@@SpicerDesignsLLC Keep up with the great videos.
Hello , I would recommend starting a file with gm customer service, the issues you have may resurfaces latter in the vehicles life , your scr and egr ( exhaust particulate filter )plugging and needing replacement wouldn't be uncommon. Somthing to monitor going forward.
love the look of your Silverado with the chrome, black paint and blacked out badges with the z71 package and duramax to top it off.
Thank you. Nothing too crazy but i like it. Looks beefy
Great job on this video, well articulated sir.
Thanks Rod!
Great video and a special salute to that absolutely charming lady we saw too little of !
Thank you. She should be in the next couple videos. Shes always busy with the kids.
Not a regular viewer however I saw your first video explaining the issue - thanks to you and Tim for sticking with researching the issue. It’s a shame the lack of gumption of dealers not looking into issues. Especially with everything in a data base. Anyone calling you is a liar is just not familiar with GM trucks, every truck has a unique data plate showing GVWR and payload limits. Every year they change, every trim level is different. Thanks again for sharing, hope you enjoy the Duramax for many years to come.
Thank you!
Seriously! It doesn't matter what the subject is, you videos are always enjoyable!
Thanks John! Much appreciated
I have 3.0 F-150 Powerstroke. My DEF range is about 5000 miles on tank of def but it goes up significantly when towing. Don't be surprised using def when towing....
My Def range when towing my 4 seat can am is about 1100 miles and when empty I am good for about 3000 miles over the last 115,700+ miles.
@@fixintoo7194 I just topped up def. Think it's 5 gal tank and the computer was showing 6000 miles range.
Crazy find!
Way to go Tim!
Thanks for this, I have heard of this issue, I have a 2022 with a 3.0L diesel with no issues , but i'm sure there are some who do and can't get any satisfaction from their dealer.
Nice video man. This will help a lot of people.
Yea TIM! let’s all put him in for regional service manager! But what a great video! Now my questions, what normal commuting mileage do you see, highway mileage you see and towing mileage? Plus what does the lifetime mileage average on the driver information center say?
Good outcome! My third 5.3 is great. But there are incentives on the ‘24 Babymax right now. Hmmm. Thanks. Confidence in the Bowtie restored.
As a retired 38 year GM tech they know them Duramax is all of them are have severe issues and people still buy them. I don’t understand that I’ve said in a lot of meetings and they know that motor is no good and the V8 Duramax.
Sweet - glad that ended up being the issue after all! I posted that TSB # on your towing test video and glad to hear that you had Tim to help coordinate all the warranty work! From your previous video, it sounds like you could use the cab version of your Kymron excavator so maybe another towing test video is in store to go pick one up?! Gotta make sure the oil consumption is fixed, right??? 😂
I think i remember you posting that now that you say that. I appreciate the help. And yes, im been contemplating upgrading my larger machine to the cab version or the next larger model. Maybe this summer.
That excess oil that the motor was burning has clogged your dpf filter in excess of normal use. Keep all your paperwork. Getting chevy to replace that under warranty will be your next fight. Good luck!
Thank you for the great information, I don't even own the LM2, but what amazing info for those who do and use excessive oil/DEF. Tim, if you are looking at this video, god bless you.
Thanks for the nice comment. Much appreciated
That's great info. GMC/Chev has had their share of problems with the oil consumption issue on various engines. You're very lucky Tim came along and helped you get to the bottom of it. Guys like that are a dying breed which is very unfortunate. I'm sure this will help someone else and you might be surprised that this video ends up with very high views over the years from people searching for answers to the oil consumption problem. I'm glad you got it resolved. Dave
Very true. Couldnt have done it without Tim. Hopefully it does help someone or many. That would be great.
thanks so much for this video. getting my truck into the shop Monday. i have 19305 on my cover. ive been blowing though DEF and my oil is low after towing.....
No problem. Seems to be helping a lot of people which is great. Good luck with the repair.
In absolutely in love with the tires on your truck 😍
Im really happy with them
Thanks for your video, kyle. Your video got me looking at my 3.0. Sure enough, I fell into this TSB, and my local dealer is getting it fixed. Great video, thank you for your info. They changed the #2 glow plug a few months ago but never looked further into it and I brought it to their attention after watching your video.
Thats great! Sounds like you have a good dealer.
Thank you the information in this broadcast was great community benefit unfortunately manufacturers don't always go the extra mile and that's service writer that helped you he is a Prince
Service manager...I'm too old to turn wrenches anymore ...and I leave Service writing to the kids 😅
Thanks for sharing! 👌👍
I don't tow. And I don't have glow plug codes. But I do add a qt of oil almost 5-6k miles. Might have to check this out. 2021 silverado 3.0
Is this a truck channel? Big props to Tim, that's awesome! I enjoyed the video, always enjoy some closure. Probably not worth a video, but have you towed to see if the problem is fixed?
I understood this comment wrong the first time a read it. No i havent towed with it. I agree, i probably wont make a video of another towing test. Might just do a quick mention/ update in a future video.
Great video. Thankfully my 2021 doesn't have that issue or the glow plug one. praying it doesn't happen..
Muchas gracias por compartir tu experiencia…!!! Saludos
Thanks for the 8675309, glad you were able to fix that issue. Now only 44,000 more miles and you should delete and tune it. More performance and longevity
I would be interested in that. Especially if the dpf is due. Id rather spend the money on the delete
This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I have a 2023 GMC Sierra with the LZ0. I have an interest on the 3.0L design in general. I believe you did a good job on your production. Thanks for doing it!👍
Thanks Eric! I appreciate that. I also like the idea of the smaller duramax. Definitely has its benefits. Ill likely upgrade to the LZ0 next. Thanks for the comment
Good info!!!
Glad your problem is fixed, glad I drive a Toyota.
