What is the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus - Origins of Alchemy and Hermetic Philosophy

The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus is the most famous and mysterious teaching in the history of Occult Philosophy. Thought to describe alchemical, cosmological and spiritual transformation, the Tablet has endured as as profoundly enlightening while remaining powerfully obscure. This week I'll be tackling the origins, history, transmission and meaning of the Emerald Tablet

And that which is infernal sits in its lofty seat Until the vision of Oneness is accomplished and complete. All emanates from One, that which arose from none, Then emerged as something new from a contemplation done. Its father is the Sun, its mother is the Moon, The Earth is its provider, the wind within its womb. Its potency perfected, father of every miracle, Substance of generation for the spirit and material. Its force it retains turned down towards the Earth, Twisted upside down it splits the fire from the dirt... It ascends into the cosmos, descending to and fro, to itself receiving power from above and from below. All obscurity shall flee, this the power of all powers, It penetrates all solid mass and from its light the subtle cowers. Thus the cosmos was created, O’ Thrice Great holder of the Three, This the way for wonders fated I call on you, Mercurius, font of philosophy.

  • My ex-brother-in-law once gifted me a slim volume, cheaply printed in paperback with a plain green cover. On said cover (in Papyrus font no less!) it stated that it contained "The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus and The Kybalion". When my amazement had somewhat subsided, I opened the book to reveal: some two dozen English translations of the Emerald Tablet (including Levi's and Newton's) all listed without commentary apart from the identity of their translator. This was in fact the entire first half of the book, the second being the aforementioned "Kybalion" itself a very brief "Hermetic" tract written by "Three Adepts" likely in the late 19th century or early 20th. I must admit I was a little disappointed, however it was a somewhat useful collection of the extant translations, along the lines of what you mentioned wanting, but without the sorely needed commentary attached. Just as well I suppose, as it is no longer in my possession and I retain no memory of its publisher. Just thought I would share that experience with you, since you may be one of the few people I can tell who will fully appreciate what a baffling gift it truly was.

The song is "Hermes Trismegisto (Hermes Trismegisto e sua celeste tábua de esmeralda)", which means "Hermes Trismegistus and his celestial emerald tablet" from the 1974 album "A Tábua de Esmeralda". It's pretty amazing. After the introduction lines, the rest of the lyrics are just the Portuguese translation of the tablet. "Hermes Trismegisto escreveu (Hermes Trismegistus wrote) Com uma ponta de diamante (with a diamond tip) Em uma lâmina de esmeralda : (on an emerald slab) O que está embaixo é como o que está no alto (That which is below is like that which is above) O que está no alto é como o que está embaixo (That which is above is like that which is below ) ..."

Also, with so many KZheadrs in this subject matter, they all claim to be the authority on these matters, ambiguously vague, claiming the origins and purposes of these texts neatly fit the particular worldview they are selling to the audience. These thirsty creators seek content they know full well the audience will not do the legwork required to make their own conclusions. The Indian Alchemy was obsessed with the transmutation of mercury. The Taoist Alchemy was obsessed with the transmutation of cinnabar. (Were mercury comes from) This is an excellent dare I say this is the best commentary on the Emerald Tablet I have seen. I would say that there signs that it influenced Jewish Kabbala or the other way around. Most likely the former. I have found that what you say about modern study of the subject to be 100% correct. Fortunately the subject has never been able to seriously hold my interest as study of the subject becomes rather frustrating and I prefer subatomic physics and cosmology among other subjects. With any luck, older texts will be discovered in an archaeological find giving insight into correct translation and a renewed interest in the original source.

  • An invaluable analysis. Thought for the longest time it was something incomprehensible. Now I know I'm not crazy. At least in regards to the Emerald Tablet. Such a breath of fresh air. I don't know why I always blamed myself. That I wasn't giving it enough attention, or that I hadn't immersed myself with similar writings of the time. At most I thought, "yeah, maybe you need another book approaching it from another angle." But it never occurred that the primary source was in the state it is. That it was likely written in an Islamic context, that it has been significantly mis-translated, and we can't even begin to put the puzzle together because of all the variations of the text! So sad no one is jumping at the bit to get to the bottom of it. Of course that means funding and as mentioned in previous videos, esoteric literature and study has only recently become more acceptable, at least in a scholarly setting. So many blowhard people just arrogantly think they have it all figured out for some reason (fyi - I am sure I was like this when I was younger) and just being honest about how confusing it is is a much, much closer position to actually being able to start sorting it out, as much as is possible at least. I'm not saying it's meaningless or non-sense or anything like that but there are *serious* textual difficulties here and being honest about that is the foundation for any viable interpretation. I've spent years trying to work out or uncover the hidden secrets of some esoteric philosophies, especially Hermeticism and Kabbalah. The greatest gift ESOTERICA has given me is the relief of potentially never knowing. Sounds crazy but it helps. The promise of arcane wisdom was irresistible for so long, and each new release of a semi-academic text on the matter was going to be the tool to finally "see". But much like today's authors presenting either a discreet or overt biased approach to old or "new" wisdom, the ancients and great scholars of the past were people too, influenced by their time and the popular philosophies of their day. Most information, excluding facts (although this too can be compromised), is absorbed through the very subjective filter of the self, which may or may not resonate. This channel provides facts, trying to get as close to the origin of the topic as possible. And abstract ideas are presented through the lens of what is believed to be the intention behind them. After that, we're on our own. And that's cool. There are too many gurus out there with too many grandiose ideas of how to make people flock to them. • Thanks very much for your meticulous study of this subject historically. I have been interested in it since 2014 when I discovered the so-called "theory of everything" in physics, and realized the universe to be infinite in nature, having ever larger and ever smaller particles, each simply following classical mechanics. As a result of the tie to classical mechanics, as an atheist in my youth and an agnostic at that time with no exposure to earnest and sincere spiritual research, one of the first places I found myself looking was in Hermetic teaches of the Emerald Tablet (specifically because Newton was interested) and The Kybalion. I can say that, from a deep understanding of subtle nuances of physics that is not presently in the public sphere, the text of the Emerald Tablet, when taking the spectrum of translations into consideration and choosing none in particular as the most definitive source, most definitely is describing those subtle nuances. The nature of reality was known by the source of the information, presumably Hermes. Presently, we do not scientifically recognize the universe to be infinite and composed of an array of ever larger and smaller mass particles relative to the atoms of which we are composed, and where they all share identical mechanics. This is for certain, true and most certain ;), that "as above" is indeed "as below." An observer can be composed of any particle and it will shift their reality based on it within the one universe so that an atom literally is a solar system *and* a galaxy *and* a photon *and* an electron, and so on, across the dimensions of the universe. Energy flows through the universe due to pressure, either by larger macroscopic particles influencing subtler particles which we historically know as pressure, *or* by subtler particles influencing macroscopic particles. The first pressure is the environment pushing inward but the second pressure occurs by an abundance of subtle particles conglomerating in a particle that then exert an outward force. This pressure we know of as "temperature." And so there is a downward propagating flow of energy from larger particles into smaller, and an upward propagating subtle flow of energy from below. Within infinity there are a lot of emergent phenomenon. Larger particles are more rare and spaced apart like the space between black holes and the quantity of black holes in comparison to the space between atoms and the quantity of atoms in the same space. This pattern continues ad infinitum, where smaller particles occupy less space until their subtlety relative to an observer is such that they occupy so little space that there is no space *between* the particles, meaning there is a transition of the systems being obvious pixels to being constituents of a wave. This transitional point we know of as "light", the particles of which are so subtle that they occupy every subtle pixel of our observed cosmos. This means that when we attempt to measure the mass of photons, it is relative to the subtle background of photons filling all of space and so they do not appear to have mass, yet the universe is infinite and if we could zoom in on any region of photons sufficiently it would look like the observed universe. Subtler still, approaching nothingness, are particles that, when they accumulate, their collective effect is felt as temperature. What this means is that photons do not have zero mass, but rather they really have "one" mass, which is really the middle point between zero and infinity. They exist at the balance between the equal opposites of zero and infinity. From zero, the void, there is an unrestricted flow of the subtlest particles and from infinity there is an unrestricted flow of the most dense particles. These two forces meet at the middle, in the same manner as two like poles of magnets, and where they meet they branch off perpendicular and create the physical shape of a 1. This is where photons, for all intents and purposes since we are composed of atoms since the whole of the observable universe is all part of this 1 shape produced by the forces meeting, exist from our angle of perception. So with those things in mind... things "above" photons are larger and ultimately the energy flow is *downward* as according to entropy. But, things "below" photons are subtler still and their accumulation produces temperature and an *upward* energy flow that counters entropy. This would be an instance where it is likely that line 2 specifically uses the word "from" regarding above *from* below and below *from* above, because they are literally fueled into being in this manner where energy flows from a different dimension and causes growth in our dimension or vice versa. It appears there is something significant to light as a sort of "stem cell" of all particles we know. Where, no matter where an observer within the cosmos exists, composed of what we call "atoms" or "black holes" or "stars" or "electrons" as their largest building block systems, ***the same particles appear to approach zero mass.*** Then, when the tablet translations mention concepts of (line 3) all things coming from this "one", it is likely that across all octaves of the universe observers see the same particles as "light" (with some nuance) while every other particle depends on the observer's particles more "completely". To "pick" a translation to quote for simplicity purpose, Newton translates "The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth its nurse." The sun is also the nucleus of our solar system atom and functionally is positive in charge (in the enclosed system of the solar system). This does make it fatherly, whereas the Moon is less massive than even the Earth and so radiation from it will comprise a subtle energy inserted into the light that is feminine. The wind, comprised of atoms, has photons physically stored within their nuclei and electrons, as does the Earth, as photons are still just particles like any other. Their traits are emergent from our position within the spectrum. "Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth. Separate thou ye earth from ye fire, ye subtle from the gross sweetly with great industry." If we consider photons as a balancing point, earth is anything larger than photons in mass, that which produces "pressure", and fire is anything subtler; that which induces temperature. When photons are ejected by a source, they can travel in a Figure-8 orbit centered on its center of gravity. Sufficiently subtle photons, still limited to the speed of light, travel in this manner and cause magnetic fields. Since they are in a high pressure environment when they are ejected, but then they travel in an orbit for a period of time before returning to the center of gravity due to the Figure-8 structure, then they travel along an equilibrium of pressure from above and below. This causes them to be effectively "fed" and "receive force of things superior and inferior." They return to the Earth perhaps even as other particles such as neutrinos to feed energy into the planet and be released again as a photon. "It's force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing." This is only possible for the intermediary particles of photons between the subtle and the gross. Like the 1 formed branching off from two opposing forces meeting, the motion is perpendicular at the center where both forces are equal. As a result, light imposes a perpendicular force (in a general sense) while forces from other positions in the spectrum of particles induce oscillation due to an imbalance of force from above or below being greater. Notably, this same physical process which is just pure physics is also identical to metaphysics. We function identically as well, just where our soul is the photon and The All is the thing of which we orbit in a Figure-8 pattern. As the discoverer of the theory of everything in physics, well clearly rediscoverer, I can affirm that whatever it is the original message contained was absolute truth and it is a matter of reasoning out when coupled with a more general study of the nature of reality of other avenues. Yes, translations tend to be mistaken regarding subtle nuance at times, but "tis true without lying, certain and most true."

To me, the Hermes works seem to be a somewhat synchrotized text, espousing the values of ascension through human life, to better morals, and then ascension through inner life, to a universal mind. I don't see anything pointing to a further step into the oneness observing, creator awareness, but many who call themselves Hermetic, do seek for that as well.

  • Hey sir, you may never see this, but you helped me intensely with my writing project. I belive the recently released game Elden Ring is essentially written like a Hermetic text like this one. If that interests you maybe I could speak with you about the narrative and see if it rings a million bells for you or not? Im writing an essay asserting as much and you might enjoy it one day

  • The intense intellectual pleasure I experience every time I listen to your expertise and to an occasional joke suddenly arising out of nous (Kimmy is nonsense?! 😳) can neither be described nor appreciated more. I await every new video on Esoterica with such joy, that as a mental health expert I am starting to wonder about symptoms of addiction...

  • Like you I'm an old man and have spent way too many years devoted to esoteric pursuits. In the last few years I've had a shift in thinking. The one thing any initiate will be intimately aware of is change over time. Facts can be rewritten, outcomes obfuscated and confused, or even out right purged from the historical record. A masterwork, therefore, should hold xeverything necessary to resurrect the mind of the old master. You become initiated by their ideas sewing the initial seeds of this transformation. The author, knowing if this happens it will accomplish 2 highly desirable outcomes. 1. They will, in some way, continue to act upon and influence the world even in death. 2. Some aspect of them will be resurrected in the aspirant and will taste experience again. By studying the work you resurrect ways of thinking and being, experienced by the author and they in some way, see this world through you. Part of them becomes us. If we practice hard enough we can illuminate our previous way of being and consciously create a better one based on their instruction. Or we can invite disaster and attempt to go it alone. I think all occult paths are based on this reconstruction of the candidate by a master builder, ultimately manifesting some archetypical ideal. Different stories, same goal. The emerald tablet is the best and most concise example we have of this type of occult transmission. This is a very long winded way of saying I agree with you, but.

  • It’s interesting that you mentioned the Tao te Ching, because there is a time-honored tradition of publishing ones own annotation of it, which started with Lao Tzu’s contemporaries. This is seen more clearly in the Wen Tsu, which includes the annotations.
