  • An accurate description of the breed. They also like to be with other dogs and are happier with other dogs than humans! I have had this breed for almost 60 years now and they are truly amazing, adorable, sweet and love cuddles! I have two now, a blenheim and a tri colour. My blenheim is a rescue who was badly abused by the monsters who had him. I saw him being offered for sale on the internet quite by accident - I wasnt and wouldnt look on the internet to buy a puppy. But I saw him being advertied in a cage which I thought odd and followed up on it. It transpired he was kept in a cage under the stairs as the womans boyfirend had an aggressive dog who didnt get on with him. He was kicked, starved (I could see his ribs clearly), crawling with fleas etc. I had to pay to buy him to get him away from those monsters. Its just as well I did because on day 2 in my home I saw he was bleeding from his rectum and was rushed to the vets where it was confirmed, after a scan, that he had been severely kicked and this had torn his colon. The vet said had I not brought him in he would only have had days to live. After a very expensive vet bill, surgery, antibiotics & special diet I took him home and Ive had him for over 7 years now and he happy and content but will always have the fear of what happened. He never fully trusts humans. His name is Joey and he is my very special boy. I also have Bailey who is now 10 months old. Joey loves him so much and has brought him out of his sadness. Joey smiles all the time now.... its so incredible to behold. Bailey is sweet and cuddly with no issues as he has no fear. As a lifelong animal rights person I feel it was fate that brought Joey and I together.

    • Joey's previous owners should be in jail. Thank goodness you came across the ad on the internet, but I don't think it was by accident. Joey needed to be rescued, and you were his angel. Joey found his forever mom and home, and now has a brother (Bailey) that loves him. You are a superstar pet parent for rescuing Joey. I can only imagine the sorrow and trauma he went through. Thank God you took action. Thanks for sharing!

    • @@animaldigest Thankyou for your reply - I really appreciate it. You should see him now - so content and happy. Thank goodness I was bored that day and was just browsing the internet when I found him. It was an instant gut feeling. I dont think I will ever really know what horrors he went through - all I know is it took A YEAR for him t come anywhere near any human being! Gentle coaxing and patience finally paid off. It was baby steps until there was enough trust developed between us. I have never seen such fear in an animal before. It was truly heartbreaking. My reward comes from every day I look at him smiling and playing with Bailey whom he loves dearly!

  • Pros: 1. Lap dog 2. Easy to train 3. Intelligent 4. Moderate exercise like Daily walks 5. Minimal barking 6. Portable due to their size and barking 7. Very will with children. Don’t tempt them though 8. Ideal for 1st time dog owners Cons: 1. Require regular grooming , possibly daily 2. They shed , fur gone be every where 3. Not hypoallergenic. Asthma probably gone be fucked up 4. Loves food and can end up on my 600 lbs life if not careful 5. Adore humans - dislikes being left alone for too long. Separation anxiety 6. Must be on a leash when walking - will mess them birds up ! 7. Not a good guard dog - probably won’t scare away a squirrel 8. Health - Prone to heart disease and heart failure , brain and spine , eye conditions and ear infections. Just sickly from what she saying.

    • Some of those cons aren’t that bad. Obviously the health concerns are what they are, the hypoallergenic thing is an issue, as is watching what they eat and wanderlust, but the rest of the stuff is more preferential than a con.

  • We lost our wonderful Cav this week at age 9.5. He was diagnosed with mitral valve condition (symptom was a dry cough) in Nov 2021. Vet said he'd live another 6 to 12 months with medication. He made it about 8 months. He was slowing down over the months, and in the last few weeks he really slowed down and started swelling in his abdomen due to his heart condition. Through it all, his tail wagged. We thought it would eventually come down to a period of health crisis (trouble breathing or panicky behavior) but instead he simply laid down on the floor and quitely passed away. Our hearts ache at losing him. Greatest dog ever. God made a great breed, but the short life expectancy is tough.

  • If I were to grade my dog against the list of pros, she'd be a failure. That said, I was unfortunate in the health area with mine as by the age of about 2 and half, she developed a mild epilepsy that lasted her whole life with the exception of two gran mal seizures, I also had to make frequent trips to the vet to get her anal glands expressed as they would keep blocking. She had a good life up until I lost her about 1 month back, she hadn't developed a heart murmur until about the age of 8, but her heart went almost instantly over night, it went from a grade 1 or 2, to pretty much heart failure with in a couple days. There's medicines and procedures to rectify or control the issues, but considering the epilepsy my dog had could happen at any time and most likely finish her heart off, I didn't want her to suffer any more and chose to have her sleep early. It was heart breaking to watch every time she had a seizure. That said, if she had her way we'd be out from sun up till sundown, she'd take me a walk for miles! (when I let her lead the way, she took me for a 10 mile walk!). She was really good off the lead when on trails and fields. Some may have a prey drive towards small creatures, but mine just wanted to make friends with everything, unless something hurt her in which case she'd be scared of that species for the rest of her life, for example she got ran over by a springer spaniel as a pup and was terrified of all dogs for the rest of her life (even terrified of puppies that were only a fraction of her size) or the time my neighbours cat smacked her on the head and nose for no reason (he was an aggressive alpha cat in the neighbourhood) and she ended up terrified at cats for the rest of her life which was a shame because the neighbour also had a really nice female cat that just wanted to make friends with my dog but just couldn't get through to her. She was gentle around field mice and birds, just wanting to be friends and play with them, although they always ran away. Foxes too, she always wanted to make friends with the foxes outside at night, but they were all too skittish. Anyway, wall of text....I'll shut up for now. She passed away a month ago as of this post at the age of 10yr and 4mths.

However if you are willing to adopt an adult Cavalier, you can find a cavalier rescue and get one for several hundred dollars. I found my cavalier by going to a local dog show and meeting a cavalier owner/Breeder who had a 4 year old that she was looking to re-home after she weened her pups. I now have 2 beautiful Blenheim Cavaliers that are the loves of my life.

  • Beautiful little dogs, but make sure you check out the breeder because these little dogs have been bred by puppy mills and breeders who only see them as a " " cash cow ". See a documentary made around 10 - 15 years ago by the BBC about these breeders, many of whom were lauded by the Kennel Club, and Crufts. In it you will see the agony these dogs are put through. This documentary is for grown-ups only, and not for idiots who look to be " offended " by everything.

  • The one thing I don't agree with is that the video says they shed,... I've had 3,... none of them shed hair,... you have to groom them to keep their coats healthy, and need regular trims, and you can get a lot of hair in the brush, but I've never had hair on my clothes or furniture,... all have died with their hearts though...
