The transmission mod that TOTALLY TRANSFORMED MY LANDCRUISER!

The transmission mod that totally transformed my landcruiser was a nomad valve body upgrade! Here's how to install an upgraded valve body of your own.
Also be aware that we are absolute idiots so don't take notice of anything we say and if you smash yourself in the face with a spanner we won't be held liable.

  • I’ve got a couple of installation tricks that make this a lot easier. First, on reinstall when you attach the throttle cable to the cam, open up the spring loaded cam and keep it open by inserting a short 3/8 inch socket extension under it. It will fit right in there at the perfect width and as soon as you get the cable attached to the cam, it’ll slip right out when you pull on it. Second, you can hold the actuator spring and piston in place using a flathead screwdriver positioned with the handle on the frame of the truck and the blade holding up the piston. Once you get the valve body pushed up almost all the way into place, pull the screwdriver out and bam, you’re all done.

  • Hi All. Just finished doing this myself. I can add a few tips. After you remove the valve body etc. Clean the piston holes, springs holes etc. very well and make sure they are oil free. That way, especially if you use a thick assembly grease, they will stay in lace and its easy to do by yourself. Cheers

The cause of the failure was a roller bearing at the rear of the case. We had a long wait trying to source the bearing and in the end my local bearing supplier found the last 2 in Oz (at that time).

  • The 'black sludge ' is the friction material from servo band degregation. New fluid will not clean the transmission, but can accelerate band slippage due to increase friction material removal. This is not cleaning but a chemical reaction to both or either individuality, fluid retained on the friction materials and the friction material itself. 👍👍🇦🇺

  • An easy way to take a bit of strain off your arms when fitting or removing components like this is to cut a short piece of pine or similar slightly longer than the gap to the ground and you can lightly wedge it underneath to take some/most of the weight.

  • Well done! Loving this "build series"! Next time, don't drive it if your servicing it or replacing components... let it sit for an hour before draining the fluid. ATF is very thin and doesn't need to be warm to flow well... it would have helped greatly with the constant rain of fluid.

    • The brakes are problematic. They keep warping without even one emergency stop in there. I have had the rotors skimmed once already and it was so bad that they won’t be able to be skimmed again. And the worst part of it is they have warped again. Way too easily. It has to be either sticky calipers or the extreme heavy duty pads are too much for these rotors.

    • @@jakethomasgarner1886 Jake Thankyou for being honest about the brakes. I’ve got the same vehicle a jdm hj61 with double the km as yours. I’ve been collecting parts for the 80 series master, 4 runner calliper, upgrade using the standard disks. I’ve also gone back to 31s. I didn’t like the hard pads either. I appreciate your reply as I was tempted to just change disks and pads rather than the whole lot. I’ll let you know how it goes once we’re out of lockdown Regards Alex

      @alexcross7739@alexcross77392 жыл бұрын
    • That sounds like a bloody good idea. Yeah I think I’ll get the same disks as they are a well known and respected brand, but I’ve been told by someone I trust that I should use bendix pads instead of the DBA heavy duty ones. They’re just not needed and might actually be detrimental. Feel free to message me on Instagram @thesoundwagon
