Could the vaping industry go up in smoke?
The vaping industry has surged over the last decade, as health bodies have promoted it as an aid to quit smoking while cigarettes continue to fall out of fashion.
But the vaping industry is facing a reckoning. Governments are looking to restrict the sale of disposable vapes amid concerns about the rise in vaping among young people and non-smokers getting addicted.
Marcus Saxton, CEO of British vape company Totally Wicked and chairman of the Independent British Vape Trade Association, said: “The [vaping] market is worth between $3 billion and $4 billion. You could estimate, and intelligence would suggest, that the illicit market could be as much as two-thirds of that.”
As revenue from cigarettes declines, big tobacco companies hope to capitalize on the fast-growing vape market, Owen Bennett, global tobacco and cannabis equity researcher at Jefferies, told CNBC.
“The old cigarette model in terms of volume declines was becoming much more pressured,” he noted.
As of October, 28 countries have banned the sale of e-cigarettes. The U.K., Germany, France, Ireland and Belgium are among the countries looking into how they can ban disposable, or one-use vapes, as they continue to grow in popularity.
However, regulating that could be an uphill struggle.
Jasmine Khouja, a senior research associate from the University of Bristol’s Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group, said: “What we’ve seen in America is that [vaping] has kind of plateaued, and I think it’s starting to reduce a little bit as well. So I think we probably won’t see much more of an increase.
“I think we’ve got to around the level at which it will be at its most popular, but how long it takes for it to decrease in popularity, again, is yet to be seen.”
So, what does the rise in vaping mean for the tobacco industry, and is the hysteria over its impacts well-justified? Watch the video to find out.

Big tobacco is out here doing hall of fame numbers when it comes to gas-lighting Governments into believing that banning vapes but not cigarettes too is the solution? Coincidence I think not. It’s perfect that countries are banning disposable vapes for “health concerns” but still make original tobacco cigarettes available. They are literally getting their competition outlawed so they gain back their original position in the Tobacco / smoking market. (More profit for them)

Exactly, that's my take as well. Governments are banning vapes because they get a smaller share from it compared to the tobacco industry, so it's all about money.
though i somewhat agree, vaping has brought a lot of people who never would have smoked cigarettes, into the addiction of nicotine. i know many people who never smoked cigarettes that vape. especially young people. i even grew up hating cigarettes, and still can’t stand them. but i just recently quit vaping after a 4 year addiction. while it can be very helpful to smokers, too many people who never smoked are getting addicted to it.

The fact that cigarettes have still not been banned yet but vapes are is sad. Ban them both or don't ban them at all. Let it be a choice
How long dod it take for smoking to go “out of trend” there you’ll find your answer
They've banned them in Australia purely because they're unregulated and aren't taxed... The government is addicted to that cigarette money, with a pack of 25 cigs costing up to $50 with that price being increased by 5% a year. This isn't about health, it's about money.
As a former smoker & vap user, I would've not been able to quit smoking without vaping. It's definitely serving its purpose, however, in the wrong way & form. The bans on flavors attracted to teens & materials in the liquid is a start. More regulation is necessary. It is comparatively to cigarettes a better alternative but as mentioned in the video. Best to not do either. I now have moderate COPD due to these & I'm only 30. I am now nicotine free for almost a year.
I can understand using vape to quite cigarettes, but don’t see the point in taking up vaping if you never smoked in the first place, yes I agree it looks attractive to minors
You most definitely don't have COPD bc of vaping.
How exactly would they start by banning certain flavors "liked by teens" matter... Like legal adults won't get the vape flavor they want and prefer, only because it's favorited by teens. Say they KNEW what flavors teens even like, which they shouldn't even know because it shouldn't be getting sold directly from a smoke shop to the teens hands. And, if someone vapes, it's no easy task to quit, let alone cold turkey because their favorite flavor was banned. They'd just find a new flavor to vape 🙄
Firstly, you don't know that. Your assumption is ignorant because there is minimal data on the topic at this time. Secondly, re-read what he said. It clearly indicates he developed COPD due to smoking and switched to vapes to assist in quitting cigarettes, and while successful, in the meantime somewhat exacerbated his existing COPD. @@RaVeN1K

What a balanced segment, looking at this I have no idea how Australian media and government can get it so wrong with the misinformation they spread yet everywhere else in the world (mostly) the coverage and research is balanced and evidence based. I took up vaping to be with my children for longer and has been the only smoking cessation method that has worked for me, it breaks my heart what the Australian government is doing. Britain, although potentially with rougher roads ahead depending on the next public consultation and the amount of people who answer the call to action are so blessed to have the medical professionals backing them. Please, from an Australian who’s about to enter the dark ages of vaping with accessibility becoming almost impossible…please do not make the same mistake we did. Advocate and answer the calls to action, help yourselves to protect yourselves!

I don't vape but my gut says this is scare mongering by the big boys to protect their interests. .
I think another way that needs to be considered is that if all the people that would otherwise be smokers are vaping, its a net positive, yeah they may have never smoked, but in a different world where vapes dont exist they would be having issues
Single use cannot be recycled
They have rechargeable batteries in them, they can be recycled (not saying they do, but they could).
They can be recycled but it's arduous with the components used to make them. Refillable vapes are a better alternative.
Making harm reduced vapes illegal would be a massive cultural mistake. Don't give big-tobacco what they want.
Vaping was what helped me quit smoking. I smoked for 20 years and vaped for a few. Im now nicotine free for 2 years. Canadian govt has made it difficult for those vaping by mega price increases and limits on products but its helped so many people regardless. The vaping misinformation contributed to it, Im sure. Its still widely believed by those who dont vape. If governments are going to be banning vaping then cigarettes need to be as well. Something they will never do because they make too much money on it.
I brought up the THC/VitE acetate issue at a county commissioners meeting. I also cited up the Royal Institute study confirming it to be 20x safer than smoking. A Juul rep showed up in SUPPORT of the flavor ban (it included chewing tobacco). The same old "protect children" theme was heard over and over. The ban was killed through a technicality and luckily we still have flavored nicotine products here. Big tobacco is behind all the ban lobbying and that's clear to see.
Vaping saves lives for adult smokers, I know this because I have smoking related heart disease which nearly killed me 16 years ago, I finally switched totally to vaping over 10 years ago and while my health will never be what it once was I am still here! I think people need to be more realistic and understand kids would have experimented with smoking and become smokers, and while I am not happy about it I would rather see some of those who would smoke, instead vaping. I do believe the availability should be limited to retailers who will age verify and not sell the oversize (often with higher than legal levels of nicotine) which are either single use or rechargable single use devices. Does vaping help people quit smoking? definately and I would (and do) recommend it to many adults I know and have helped them with suitable devices and advice on e-liquids that will suit their needs best. I did try many times and different ways to quit smoking before I started Vaping (the only one that works for me)

There's a local smokeshop in my area that openly has signs saying "this store is not allowed to sell to minors" bc they've been caught doing it... multiple times... and there's still kids going in there daily. If they wanna restrict it, they better do it well Edit: the point isnt to fully stop it. I know. That's obvious. But if they want to MINIMIZE IT, they would still have to restrict it. Like, slow it down. The whole point.
There is no doing it well. Selling vapes is essentially on the honor system just like selling tobacco is. The majority of people won’t sell to children but some always will. And when you have countless retailers all across the country selling these products it’ll be impossible to catch all of the people breaking the restriction. My point is is that teens will always find a way to access age restricted products alcohol, tobacco, and now vapes.
Yeah there will never be a way to fully stop kids/teenagers from getting there hands on stuff they shouldn’t be doing

Vapinh is cool especially in school. Stay safe make clouds
The ones that looked like a cigarette was somewhat popular in my high school 10+ years ago, the new ones became popular in 2015 and now are a common sight in my country. The government makes a lot of tax revenue from tobacco even with all the restrictions and let’s not talk about alcohol, lottery, soda, fuel ect.
How come no news channel ever talks about the tobacco industry and the money they lose if people switch to vaping. Another worry is that all gapes are practically chinese now
I vape and I'm for getting rid of one use vapes or at least limit the numbers. Got all this mining for battery material and trash from disposables that get used once n trashed and that battery material and plastics builds up. Also alot of the disposables use Chinese ejuice which I don't trust. Get a pod device or aio mod that you can buy or rebuild the coil, I think that should stay. Also why even bring the weed thing up that was illegal markets selling boof and teens buying it. Has nothing do with the use of nicotine and the cessation debate. Only other thing I'd change is nic salts shouldn't be past 40mg at most ive seen up to 65mg a 6.5% blend and that too strong you'll build up a nic habit that's comparable to 3 packs a day in no time if not careful. If ya can get buy of what they call freebase dripper ejuice that at most is 12mg stick to those. Gets hard to put down with ease of convenience and hardly a smell at those 50 plus mg nic salts. Just an opinion 🙃✌️
