Somehow, an entire year has passed since the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake. In that time, the game has received an abundance of DLC. I figured now was a good time to go back to this game, replay the campaign and try out the DLC and give you all my updated thoughts on the game!

    • Yeah im tired of people trying to argue which one is better, you dont have to tear one down just to build a pedestal for the other, RE4R has alot of depth to combat, and the action is very frenetic and seamless, thanks to things like real time weapon swapping and stealth mechanics but Re4O has a very simple and consistent combat loop, its very streamlined and polished, the enemies behave pretty predictably which gives the player a large amount of control over the battlefield But both have problems RE4R's story doesnt have the campy charm the original had, but it still has an honest heart, and for every character the remake failed, like Ada, theres one that triumphs over the original, Like Louis.

RE4R is a perfect balance of respect to source material and adding fresh touch here and there. Sure, there are still some jank here and there (like very spongy enemies on higher difficulties), but all in all - almost perfect. It is also worth noticing that on release game worked super smooth - no major glitches or bugs, issues with optimization. In the era of half baked releases it's a pretty nice thing.

    • Honestly that's not a very good argument. The complaints about it make sense. Why bother having that puzzle-like inventory system if they're just going give the ability to ignore it at the push of a button? In that case why not just put in the regular list system that the other RE games have instead? Having that option to skip it takes away from any value it had. Imagine another scenario where a game implements a system that makes the game a little more challenging and overall adds a small, but unique aspect to the game. But then they also add a way to completely skip it. I'm sure you can understand how people would say that makes no sense. In the end use whichever way you want, but the complaints against it are valid.

  • The remake was a lot of fun. A very different experience from the original but certainly not a replacement. I recently replayed the original, and it does take some getting used to after playing the more modern version, but once you do its just as engaging. The limited movement just meant you had to stand your ground and instead of running away from the hordes, sometimes you have to go through. You had to be mindful of keeping you guns loaded, in case you had an enemy run up on you and you needed to switch to the shotgun right away. Or, since enemies were guaranteed to react to your bullets, just get a head shot and melee them to create an opening. I will say this for the remake though, I think I liked the boss fights more. Some of them at least, like Mendez and El Gigante. It seems like a lot of bosses in older RE games were just "stay out of range of their massive claws while occasionally turning to shoot them until their health runs out." It was hard to avoid their attacks, and in some cases felt impossible. This was also an issue in the recent RE 2 Remake, so maybe its just because all the bosses in RE 4 remake have some kind of projectile attack that's telegraphed more clearly, idk. Sadly though their personalities are a bit diluted, because they all just talk/act like crazy cultists. It also sucks that you don't see their transformations like in the original, and I am starting to get sick of this trend where everything now has an eyeball weak spot. I know saddler had them but Mendez and Salazar didn't, and i don't see why they were needed.

    • Yea, I’m in the og is objectively better camp. Primarily due to the mechanics being tighter. No random bullet deviation, confirmed staggers, lasers across all weapons, etc. The other being the diluted villiains imo but that’s balanced a bit by Ashley being a straight up grade in personality and Luis getting more screen time. The boss fights are absolutely an improvement because they feel more interactive. Verdugo and krauser are peaks of the remake for me.

    • It's a sidegrade since both games are differently designed around Leon's movement or lack thereof to a near fundamental level. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could have issues getting accustomed to OG Leon's method of shooting past the initial village segment when the enemies literally slow down when they're 2 meters in front of you to give you time to plan & react accordingly. It's game-y and it works by adding a layer of tension to every combat encounter in way that leans heavily into Classic RE's design philosophy. The enemies in Remake on the other hand are way more aggressive (sometimes to an obnoxious degree if we're talking higher difficulties.) to fit Leon's modernized shoot walk. It is less a complete upgrade and moreso a matter of pure subjective preference at this point

RE4 original was just... dam. It was the influencer. Dead Space, Gears of War, God of War 2018 (the over the shoulder camera gave me memories of RE4 original when I played it). I beat the remake twice and completed the mercenaries highest rank with all the characters. Initially I was super excited for the remake, but my joy dwindled throughout the game as I saw many changes to a lot of characters I loved, Luis and Salazar especially. I prefer the original, but I can see why more modern gamers would like the remake. I am just tired of hearing remake fans shit on the originals. It was nice being an RE fan and talking about the games/characters with other RE fans. Now Im always listening to people talk about which one is better the remake or the og. It kind of split the fan base. I think we all should appreciate the craft of both. We dont get the remakes without the originals being masterpieces in their era. Like or dislike whatever game but we don't need to convert others to liking what we like. Let that be their own decision.

Your right and it’s hard to call them out because I think older gamers cope by telling themselves that these new games are true evolution. There are some improvements to re4r I appreciate, like increasing the tension & horror atmosphere. Luis, Ashley, and Krauser were fleshed out really well. But after playing re4 og, ah I can’t help but love it so much more. I realized the camp in the original meant a lot to my experience so the more serious route didn’t hit as hard/lacked impact for me. Ada, Salazar, and Saddler were much less entertaining/interesting to me. Also I know the parry system matters a lot to people but as I returned to re4 og, I didn’t really notice it missing. But I still thoroughly enjoyed the remake, and it made me buy a ps5 after having no desire to get one. I appreciate my experience with the remake and it ranks very high for me, though now in comparison I acknowledge that the original will always hold my favorite spot. • Both games are incredible, and I love the way they did the story and characters in Remake. Krasuer took a little getting used to, and I still think it makes more sense for him to have been using Wesker as a source for being familiar with Los Illuminados at all, but this this still a good depiction of him. Having him kill Luis and have more of a connection with Leon (without the use of a side game like Darkside Cronicles) made sense. Mendez had a lot more to say this time, which is good, and even the Right Hand's more fleshed out through his notes and cutscenes, feeling like a silent but proper villain this time. Saddler and Salazar are the only villains I feel could have been improved. I like how spooky and almost otherworldly Saddler is here, especially in the scenes when he's speaking to Leon through the plaga, but once you see him in the flesh, I begin to miss his silly Dracula-esque portrayal from the original game. He was one of the most overconfident villains in the series, even finding Leon's insults and damage to his cult to be amusing. The way he got riddled with bullets and just smiled it off in the original is far cooler than how that scene was done in Remake. For the original Saddler, maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of have the impression that he didn't truly believe in the Los Illuminados religion and was simply playing the part of their cult leader to feel empowered, hence his ego. Worshipping an ancient alien/bug is BS and he knows it. In Remake, he's absolutely a zealot by comparison, buying into the whole alien/bug belief as a gift from God. Salazar is close. He's still this prissy, flamboyant, man-child who thinks he's way bigger than he actually is, but they were much more subtle about it this time. His tantrums and lack of control are mostly absent throughout Remake, which is unfortunate. He only really acts like his old self when you fight him, which is the last time he even appears in the story. We also had a missed opportunity for him to interact with Krauser, as they never actually met in the original, but I can't really imagine what they would say aside from Krauser not taking him seriously or whatever. Salazar's frustration with Leon is still amusing in Remake, though.

  • I think it holds up immaculately well. I was hesitant on this one because the original was never a favorite of mine. I was part of that crowd that was not pleased with the action-oriented direction It was taking the franchise. But this game manages to be a bit more believable in plot and events, if only because it's taking itself a little bit more seriously while still maintaining a bit of that over the top action movie feel. But I also really like that they actually added in some horror. There's not a ton of it but there's a few segments that were actually really damn creepy, the first part with the garador down in the basement all chained up, Ashley's segment with the knights, and then the regenerators are way creepier than they were in the original. Otherwise I always felt like that original game had a horror backdrop and nothing else to it otherwise it was still balls to the wall cheesy action I prefer just the plot line and setting and enemies of the original trilogy to this day, but this remake really surprised me and managed to put it enjoyment high up there for me as far as the franchise goes.

  • @14:00 The issue with *yellow paint* is simple: why is it _not_ something you can turn "On" or "Off"? Better still, add a third option, where it is just a slight discoloration over that area. *Why not make that a feature instead of all-or-nothing difficulty modes?* Because those are kind of _archaic:_ I know it won't work for some aspects of games, but a *lot* of the challenging factors should be on _sliders_ so I can tailor the challenge. If I want it _easy_ or brutally _hard_ across the board, I just set all the sliders accordingly, replicating the effect of all-or-nothing Difficulty Modes. *However,* maybe I just wanna challenge myself in key areas? Or I don't want to challenge myself that much but I'm good at puzzle solving while bad at aiming? Then I could set the sliders for those aspects accordingly!

The story is handled with the right balance of grounded and action movie for me, the combat flows a lot better without tank controls, and most things were just handled much better in my eyes. Ada was the only glaring problem I had, but she’s one blemish on a very beautiful picture. It’s not for everyone, but I say if you want to jump into RE4 for the first time, the Remake is the way to go.

Most casual players are going to use auto sort to conserve time. Remove that and they would have to sort the items, which can show people how fun it can actually be when they try for the first time.

I'm a huge fan of the series, been playing since the original and loved the remakes, all of them i waited this long to be able to dedicate a good amount of time, each time i play. I'm also a big fan of cod so that takes up a lot of my time but i of course play a ton of things in between. For what comes next, I'm hoping for verionica as I know most fans are. Id love for them to remake 1, 0, 5 and 6. I think theres a lot of life left in the series. I didn't think I'd be a huge fan of 7 due to the perspective change but man was i wrong. I got 8 and couldn't get into it. Not sure why, I'll revisit it again at some point. I hope that 9 goes back to the remake style and we get a new story with all of our favorite characters. Being able to pick off almost half of an enemy crowd before I have to be seen is really satisfying and lets me save a lot of resources. Although commanding Ashley is just much better in Original than Remake, even if her AI is objectively better.

      @redninja3056@redninja30562 ай бұрын
    • @@redninja3056 in remake you can clear entire areas with just stealth. And in doing so, you actually take care of less enemies. You can even avoid some big guys entirely if you elect to do stealth. Another thing that I myself recently discovered is that you can even shoot barrels to alert groups of enemies and then take them out from afar. And since your knife/knives is also a resource, it plays into yet another core tenant which is resource management. Want to save your knife or save your ammo? And the best part is that it’s not mandatory ever which again goes back to freedom. Even better than that is that the game will allow you to slip up. Get caught? Well you may have thinned the herd but now it’s time fight or evade. The stealth is far from lacking in remake. It’s an alternative way to tackle some areas which is a CORE TENANT of Resident Evil games. Freedom as to how you want to tackle a situation.

In other games I don't mind it, but in Resident Evil 4 it ruins the dark and gritty look the game is going for. I played the game with a mod that replaces the yellow paint with a small Los Illuminados logo, which I find more aesthetically pleasing while also making more sense in-universe. I think games should find other ways of telling the player what they can interact with or have an option to turn helping colors off.

  • I think with games like this one that are very "gamey" and arcade like at times, the yellow paint isn't a big deal. If it was in something like RDR2 where it would break immersion, sure, but with RE4R I wouldn't say I'm "immersed" to the point I forget I'm playing a game. I'm moreso just really engaged in the incredible gameplay and a little yellow paint for me to quickly notice where a breakable object is in an already super frantic and fast paced game doesn't ruin that at all for me

You couldn't just dodge around them and continue. Then, relying on headshots set you up for a more difficult encounter later when their heads would explode and then a deadlier enemy was created.

    @SebbyPlaysMusic@SebbyPlaysMusic2 ай бұрын
    • Both systems work the same as it is literally the same system from the same team. In both REmakes when the crosshairs narrow, you DON'T get a damage boost. What it does is give you a higher chance of a critical hit on their weak spot (usually the head). That's why if you shoot say the chest, the damage remains the same. The laser sight in the remake basically gives you "always narrow crosshairs" in function.

  • I love both games, but I think the original has a more satisfying gunplay due to the weapons feeling more powerful + consistent enemy feedback + laser sight for all weapons + more precise aiming. Furthermore, even with tank controls, Leon in the original was more comfortable to control due to how snappy and responsive he was, in the remake he feels heavy and clumsy to control due to the “realistic” movement animations. Playing both games on professional difficulty made me appreciate the original more. The remake improved some aspects but it also created problems that didn’t exist in the original. On higher difficulties, the staggering is random and a lot of times it takes forever to stagger an enemy. Some would argue that it makes the game more challenging and unpredictable, but I would argue that it makes the game dull and annoying. There’s also a higher chance to get stun-locked in the remake (in the original, it was rare to get stun-locked except for a very few boss attacks). Lack of invincibility frames, weapon sway + bloom, inconsistent staggering and enemies being bullet sponges, enemies trying to grab you every two seconds, combined with Leon’s clumsy movement and him getting staggered by anything just makes the game not fun to play on higher difficulties IMO. A KZheadr by the name of “Djisso” did a good job highlighting these issues. I also think Ashley’s Ai was better in the original because you can tell her to wait in a spot and she sticks to your back like a glue. Her character was better in the remake, but her Ai was worse. The only characters that I thought were improved were Ashley and Luis, every other character was a downgrade (especially Saddler and Salazar). Saddler and Salazar were never the most “deep” villains (I mean, it’s an RE game afterall) but at least they were entertaining in the original because of their back and forth banter with Leon. In the remake, they don’t have that much interaction with Leon. Then there’s the other stuff like the art direction, sound design, cutscenes, voice acting of some of the characters, etc. I mostly prefer the original when it comes to these aspects. The remake is good but it’s not really a direct improvement nor does it replace the original. Both games are good for different reasons. Call me crazy, but I think RE4’s more “arcadey” gameplay will stand the test of time much better than the remake’s gameplay.

New parry system, stealth mechanics, gore/ dismemberment system (makes combat better), better knife combat, enhanced exploration and backtracking, attaché case charms, expanded shooting range, more costumes, more in-depth treasure combining system, new enemy types/ mini bosses, a MUCH better Ashley section (that can now be explored by Leon), more screen-time and character development for Luis, new and improved Separate Ways, new areas, greatly enhanced environmental storytelling (compare Hunter’s lodge, ballroom, etc.) and more. Besides some minor things like the lava room and U3 storage crate area, the remake has everything the original has, and much more.

You cant change the sensitivity at all. So it's always really low. There are some systems that are similar to what you put in a stick aiming system. You dont want that. You want the raw input of moving the controller to aim. The assists make it harder to aim. Wish Capcom would fix it

  • Yeah, I think both have some similar strengths, but the experience can just be so... Weird going between them. Both versions are pretty good speed games from what I can tell, the Remake is just a bit more obviously designed that way with incentives to go fast beyond how slow the game might be otherwise. It's why I do enjoy the remake a tad bit more than the original, but mainly because I've really sat down and worked the remake out. I enjoy the novelty of the original, but suffice it to say, it doesn't as much encourage fast pace. The surface level reason you replay the original are some of the new game + weapons and to basically max out as much gear as possible. Meanwhile RE4 remake likes to ask the player to speedrun in regular New Game to even unlock some of the cool stuff. RE4 original is more casually built as a completionist game, but I can only imagine I would think of it more fondly if I just sat down and figured out how to play it FAST. Either way, I do find the new game + grind in both games to probably be the weaker aspects. There was some drama in regards to speedrunning, what with the patch on the door clip and the paid DLC for in-game weapon upgrade Tickets. Personally? I didn't mind it, I still managed to get by well enough for my S+ professional runs without those, I don't mind if someone opts to pay money to make getting S+ a bit easier for themselves, this game can kick your ass efficiently regardless.

  • Personally I LOVE the auto sort. I've done a couple other RE games and I don't enjoy resource management. Either it's boring or it is frustrating that I can't leave it on the ground for later

  • Remake and Original are both amazing. Original was more campy and had cheesy dialogue but it was still fun nonetheless. The Remake was taking themselves seriously and added new mechanics in the game like the parry system and changing some dialogues and stories. Imo both are amazing so there is no wrong choosing which one is good

  • Resident Evil 4 OG is my top 1. Resident Evil 4 Remake is my top 1.1. I’m glad that they’re both great games and still somewhat different while being the same at the same time.
