Pokemon, the largest media franchise in history, has a strong appreciation of its history, which can be seen by the fact that the original games (Red and Blue) have been remade twice. And despite EVERYTHING I say in this video, I still do really like all three of these games and Pokemon at large.

  • I’d argue that Fire Red and Leaf Green were remakes of Red Blue and Green while let’s go Pikachu and Eevee were remakes of Yellow. The let’s go series has so many similarities to yellow with a lot added, including the fact you can get Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle from the same trainers you can in the original game.

    • The worst ones are: Hold the DS/3DS upside down while leveling up, get 4 critical hits in a row, lose 49 HP and then travel under a stone bridge, raise Feebas' Beauty stat to at least 170 out of 200 (and you can't reset its stats, in case you don't get it high enough), defeat three Bisharps that lead a group of Pawniards, take 1000 steps using the Let's Go feature, use Rage Punch 20 times (until your Primeape literally dies of a heart attack,) and so on. And I thought needing to have perfectly balanced Attack and Defense stats is gen 2 to get Hitmontop was a huge pain in the ass...

  • Let's go may be a babysitting simulator, but if there's one thing I've thoroughly enjoyed in the game, it is the soundtrack. The orchestral style still maintains the chiptune charm of the original. Love it to bits.

  • Alright so the only thing i heavily disagree is the inclusion of the help menu in FR/LG. You see I love when a game actually explains mechanics and lingo using an in-game menu like a book or anything. It's completely optional and while it explains some obvious stuff, it's harmless at best because it's not obligatory. This is much better than alt-tabbing or looking at your phone on a wiki because the game refuses to explains some of its mechanics Also the biggest sin of the Let's Go games is not having Mew under the truck near the S.S Anne. That would've been a hell of a callback to one of gaming's most infamous playground stories

  • I seriously can't understand why it was necessary to so thoroughly disney-fy the rival character. Gen II was literally both the second *and last* time you actually have a 'rival.' Every subsequent game just had some dopey semi-sidekick who's just your friend who you, for some reason, feel the need to crush in battles over and over again throughout the game. Why? Kids aren't able to handle an actual rival now? Even as G-rated as they were? The difficulty argument is a separate issue and I can at least see both sides of it, even if kids today have infinitely more resources to help them figure out how to progress than we did with RBY and we all somehow managed just fine, but Pokemon's story and characters were always perfectly kid-friendly. Why did they need so much dumbing down?

    • Likewise. I remember getting the Deoxys event through an official Nintendo appearance in my city, I believe through the wireless function? It was really cool. And nowadays, everything is wireless. People I know often say technology hasn't changed much in recent history, but just the fact that everything is wireless now disproves that.

    • Not One and the Same That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins. -John 8:24 According to the Bible, there will be a belief system during the tribulation period that everyone in the world will embrace. This, of course, will exclude those who come to faith in Christ during the Great Tribulation. Though the church will have been raptured, God will continue to be at work. People will become Christians during this time, but it will be a bleak scenario. God will raise up His representatives, two powerful witnesses. He also will send angels through the heavens who will proclaim the everlasting gospel. And He will raise up 144,000 messianic Jews to take the gospel around the globe. People will come to faith, but it will be a very hard time to be a Christian, and many believers will be martyred. And the one-world religious system that most people will buy into perhaps will be a version of the spirituality movement that we’re seeing today. For instance, in the days following 9/11, a lot of prayer services took place, including a televised interfaith service at Yankee Stadium. Bette Midler sang, and Oprah Winfrey, among others, spoke. To some degree, it’s great when we can get together and find what we agree on. And everyone should have the liberty to worship as they please. But we also must be aware that interfaith prayer services aren’t necessarily a good thing. It’s one thing to have interdenominational services in which Christians set aside minor differences as denominations to come together and worship. Harvest evangelistic events, for example, are interdenominational. We get together to proclaim the gospel and worship Jesus Christ. But interfaith services are a different matter altogether. We misrepresent and even insult God when we claim that all religions teach the same thing and that we’re all praying to the same God. Jesus said, “Unless you believe that I am who I claim to be, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24). He was referring to the statement God made when He spoke to Moses from the burning bush (see Exodus 3:14) Here’s what Jesus was saying: “I am equal with God. Unless you believe that I am God incarnate, that I am the Lord God, and that I am the only way to God, then you will die in your sins.” The Bible teaches that Jesus was God in human form who died for the sins of the world. It teaches that Jesus is the only way to God, that God is personal, and that He can be known in a personal way. If we’re going to proclaim the true gospel, then we must tell people this. It’s a divisive point with some. But it is one thing that we cannot compromise on as Christians. Yet if we believe that all religions teach the same thing, then we obviously haven’t considered what they actually teach. Today many people say they don’t really believe in any one religion, and they’ve found their own faith. But this, along with the seismic shifts that are happening in our culture, is a sign of the last days.

Even as a 5 year old I figured out the basics of the game within the first hour. Worst part is when I actually needed help getting through a part of the game, the info would be so basic it wasn’t worth reading. The battle with Oak and the old man catching tutorial were more than enough for me as a toddler to understand how the game works. I wish the help had answers to specific questions like “how do you get through rock tunnel” or “where are the golden teeth”. Those are the questions I needed help with as a kid, not the basic game mechanics.

Honestly it wasn't the worst fate. I leveled up some weak/cool looking Pokemon, I experimented with the daycare/breeding, I did the Kenya quest, I checked out Kurt's balls, and I got the Rock Smash TM I missed previously! By the time I found my way out, I wasn't annoyed, just excited! Because then I had a team of slightly overleveled (level 45 ish) Pokemon that I genuinely loved. And had the whole rest of the region to explore with them! I clearly remember taking on Pryce with my Machoke and Feraligatr not long after, and having an amazing time :) But! Ofc. Sword and Shield is a main series game that went back to E10+ which is why those complicated mechanics came back into play.

  • Loved this video!!! HOWEVER, I have the perfect perspective on how to compare these games. I was 9 when Pokemon Blue/Red came out. Brick Gameboy with 4 AA batteries. I spent months beating that game. I was dumb enough to use my master ball on a HORSEA! The fact that there was a video game you could hold in your hand gave you the motivation to beat it. A game in your hand that you could save and pick back up on was insane at that time. We talked to every NPC and checked every corner of the game because we didn’t have KZhead, we didn’t have the internet widely available and certainly there weren’t sites available for kids to look up stuff. ANYHOW, fast forward to this year. My 8 year old has a cell phone (Hold your comments) and plays Pokémon go with me. The concept of the enclosing circle on Pokémon go to then play Let’s Go Pikachu was huge. Kids today have to have the immediate satisfaction. You have to hand hold them else they lose interest. Complain and gripe all we want but that’s the way it is. They can look up a full fledge movie in seconds and we had to plan and set the VCR at a certain time to record a tv show. Times are different. Kids are different. There’s no way in hell I could get my son to play my old Red and blue versions without my help every step of the way. But with Let’s Go Pikachu. He’s gotten 3 gym badges with minimal help. Other than a reminder to level up his Pokémon (Which we all hated that grind) he does everything the game pushes him towards. Anyhow. This was very fun. Loved the video. I get to love/hate buying Pokémon cards for an 8 year old the way my parents did when I was 9 and it came to America. Really fun to see all this come full circle.

  • Thanks for these videos. Not all of us 90s kids got to play all iterations going through adult life, and having a chance now I'm glad there are avid fans of the series making these videos I don't have the time to make. On that note, in some of your vids you made references to the N64. Can you imagine playing Blue version as your first RPG, then getting an N64 for Christmas and playing Ocarina of Time? The graphics where amazing, granted it's handheld vs. console but as a child I could only fantasize about Pokemon with Ocarina of Time 3D graphics. After watching the first Pokemon movies in theaters and crying my 12 year old eyeballs out, I got Pokemon Colosseum which was such a disappointment despite being able to see my Gen 1 squad in 3D, it wasn't a real game adventure. Graphics on Consoles and even handhelds improved exponentially the following decade before peaking at the PS4 generation. Still no 3D pokemon...Ocarina of Time had a gorgeous remake in the 3DS, which I never owned growing out of handhelds as a big boy with real consoles and PC builds by then. Yet, the first 3D pokemon looked like ass, inferior to 1996's Ocarina of Time full of ALIASING and cell shading cop outs. I played BOTW on the Wii U I had bought just for BOTW. I had no use for the Switch my sis gave me for Xmas...then I saw Let's Go which I thought was a spin off for kids like Pokemon Snap. Wow, my 1996 childhood dream FINALLY realized in 2018! You know how I'm right? Because as I googled "first 3D pokemon game" for this comment and all the images used for the articles or YT thumbs were from Let's Go. Don't get me wrong, GameFreak is still a victim of success in this game, never having to be bought out or restructured the way Tomb Raider benefited after the Angel of Darkness flop, GameFreak didn't have to improve and their attempts at modern 3D games is pathetic. Yet despite the crappy animation and still using Cell Shading cop outs, it was a 3D experience of the First Gen games after getting cheated with Colosseum. IT FUCKING LOOKS BETTER THAN ARCEUS. I just wanted to include that to this discourse.

  • I'm kind of surprised by the complaints about the help system and Teachy TV. The TV would have involved far more coding and polish so I can see that it might have been scrapped and one of the less impressive islands could have gotten some more love or something. On the other hand, the LR help menu was probably very easy to make and implement since it's just a static text-based menu. It helped me round out my knowledge of the type chart, and helped me learns which types corresponded to regular or special stats. The stuff beyond that is a bit more basic, but I think it really accomplishes it's goal. The Help menu is there to make sure you know the mechanics of the game, and the hidden key items, HMs, and progression paths are your responsibility to uncover. It makes sure you're equipped without taking the experience out of your hands. And on top of all that, you don't need to use it, and the button mapping can be turned off so you don't accidentally annoy yourself with it. I highly prefer this help menu, which corresponds to unused buttons, when it's compared to an endless string of aggressively chipper elementary school dialogue half-explaining the same concepts.

Even then, I haven't beaten any game before my "Pokè-craze" came back way later and I decided to play Emerald. While I find it hard to consider FRLG fun nowdays due to the overexposure I had as a kid, they still hold a special place in my heart. And so does Wirgliusz. Never forget Archibald the Raticate. Never forget his horrible mispronounciation of Silph Scope. Never forget him trying (and failing) to catch Entei. Never forget his absurdly long hunt for Lugia. • Yeah, I feel like Fire Red and Leaf Green are a step down precisely because they don't break quite as easily as the originals. The early TMs are less devastating, and the high crit moves are much more balanced which makes the mid and late game a huge slog. Kanto was just kind of built and paced around the mechanics being so lopsided. It makes tons of QoL changes, but the pacing just feels off.

      @NiGHTSnoob@NiGHTSnoob Жыл бұрын
    • @@NiGHTSnoob I didn't have that issue myself...I played both of course, and played the original Red before FireRed. But the game being so much smoother to play (not just cause of 60 FPS, but also running shoes and other QoL), and without the literally broken mechanics just made it feel like more of a fun challenge to me. Cause of the original GEn 1's badge boost glitch, we were always OP and constantly cheating, without even trying to, due to any stat changes applying another Badge Boost. FireRed is the first time we got to play through Kanto without an insane advantage over the opposing trainers.

  • So, most of what was said here, I agree with. But I have complaints. Several, in fact. I don't have a problem with the Teachy TV and HELP Menu. They're completely optional tutorials the player can browse if they want but you can 100% the game without ever reading them. FireRed and LeafGreen and Let's Go feel almost TOO faithful to the original games, but in different ways. FRLG kept all the advancements from Gen 2 and 3, but not only are you not allowed to use Crobat and Blissey, but if you meet the requirements for their evolutions, the game shows an evolution animation... but they don't evolve. And won't evolve until you get the National PokeDex. Which, to me, completely defeats the point of being remakes, being able to use Pokemon you couldn't in the original. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and to a lesser extent HeartGold and SoulSilver - separate rant entirely - did not do this, and were not stingy with their evolutions. Why troll the player when you could just either not show a fake evolution animation, or better yet let me evolve Golbat and Chansey into Crobat and Blissey? They're the only two Pokemon you can access during the main game besides Eevee that got Gen 2 evolutions, and Golbat's the only one you're going to get without grinding the Safari Zone for hours, what's the harm? And it wouldn't have killed them to implement a Day/Night cycle so you could get Espeon or Umbreon either, or just made them Sun Stone/Moon Stone evolutions. Let's Go, in addition to everything above with not including Gen 2 evolutions, removed held items and abilities as mentioned, which had an additional side effect: It made including Mega Evolution completely pointless. For nearly every one of the included Pokemon that got a Mega Evolution, the biggest change they made was a new Ability that completely changed its usage, the Charizard forms for example. Mega Charizard X losing Tough Claws was a double-edged sword, on the one hand it made its mixed attacking stats actually usable but on the other hand makes its Physical moves considerably weaker, while Mega Charizard Y losing Drought - and weather being removed as a whole - defeats the purpose of its inclusion entirely, and it's just a normal Charizard with higher stats. The best thing I can say about Let's Go's Megas is that you can use either of Charizard and Mewtwo's Megas without having to switch stones between battles. They could've very easily implemented Hidden Abilities using the Catch Combo system and made lots of Pokemon much more useful than they would otherwise be, with or without the overpowered candy system. The Alola Forms are an awesome addition but they worked... weird. In addition to losing their Abilities, they also lost any moves that might be useful to them. Marowak and Dugtrio have no Physical Ghost or Steel moves to use, so they have to use Shadow Ball and Flash Cannon for Ghost and Steel STAB, and Marowak loses the STAB from its Ground-type moves. Same with Sandslash. Ninetales, Raichu and Exeggutor don't have this problem and keep their good moves just fine and don't suffer from losing their Abilities, making them some of the best Pokemon in the game. They can even be Shiny. Which begs the question, why Alola Forms, and not Gen 2 evolutions? They could've literally not included any new Pokemon besides those, and I'd be completely happy. These were also the games to introduce the permanent EXP Share and I will forever hate it for that. These are such... bizarre choices that make these games very frustrating, no matter how good or bad they might be otherwise. I like them, they're fun games, but they feel so short of their potential.

  • I'm not gonna lie, LGPE has hit the point where it's my relax and chill game. I started with Ruby but LeafGreen was my 2nd game so I still feel like I kinda identify as a Genwunner, I always loved playing Kanto remakes and I also did go back and buy the Gen 1 games back when they were like $10 each on eBay in the mid 2000s so I've had more than my fair share of Kanto but it's just such a nostalgic experience that I don't mind replaying it every couple years. I find it easier to replay it vs. the Gen 1 or 3 Kanto games just because it's on the newest console, I can play it on my TV, the graphics are amazing and there's plenty of QoL features. Ridable Pokemon, easy Shiny hunting, the nature foreteller lady, bottle caps, and so much more make LGPE an easy game to play.

I still think it would be great to have a Let's Go "Johto" DLC to LGP/LGE. Have Oak give you a SS Ticket or create a "new" path south of the Pokemon League entrance (like how it is in gen 2) to get to New Bark Town. Then obviously level scaling would continue up from the end of Kanto. This would also end up offering Johto gym leaders with better versions of their Pokemon and better moves thanks to the higher levels.
