2) These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
3) All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
4) Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
5) Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
6) Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
7) Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
8) All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
9) Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

This was one of JP's best blogs for a long time. I was dissapointed though because apart from the usual stuff on "dissonance-reduction" twadswollop (not sure how to spell that. I went to a comprehensive school before Cambridge Univershitty), I couldn't find anything to criticise. I am so glad that he is able to assimilate so much information and give us the rundown or krux (can't spell either) of what is happening, in a nutshell (I am mixing metaphors, sorry). I don't know how he manages that. Twitter, writing articles, reading books, watching Netflix, driving his children up and down the country, 3-4 youtube bogs per day, going down the pub and talking philosophy, recovering from a hangover, answering our critical comments, being chronically ill and going to the Dr., trimming his sideburns, etc. And he also has a wife. We won't get into that. No pun intended. The germans say Hut ab, sometimes they say chapeau because Napoleon was here. I have come to the conclusion that this work pentium of JP is impossible. There must be at least three of him!
I've always said it the count is nearly spot on for Kia/wia. what I love to know how many of the troops were fighting and how many they need to stay behind the lines 200k at start of war how many were fighting. Than 300k added to that again numbers could be higher that is what we know of how many were sent to fight that are not recorded

To add to my previous point, it adds to JP's analogy of the bed cover not being big enough for covering the bed. As soon as we say that we will target Russia they have to adapt their electronic warfare and anti-aircraft equipment to cover the larger area

So with regards to the casualty list, I remember that a year or so into the war, that russians were complaining loudly about being transferred to LPR or DPR units, then stating that they were being sent into sacrificial assault waves (oh the irony). However I wonder if these casualties would also be missed in any BBC / Mediazona casualty list.

@@hgv1883 Because ruzzia had already grossly violated five agreements with Ukraine when it seized Crimea by force and staged the invasion of Donbas in 2014 under guise of the little green men of the orchestrated "civil war." That said, in fairness to the Ukrainian MOD, there wasn't a lot of time to "build trenches" after the RF started its forces accumulation in Belarus and in Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts because we're talking about hundreds of miles of border, and in most of it the ground was frozen during nearly the entire time of the RF buildup. Give some credit to the AFU for having blunted and repelled the ruzzian advance in the north and east, contrary to the expectations of the Pentagon and practically everyone else.
If you remember, Zelenskyy could not even admit that the Russians were going to invade due to fear of a mass exodus. Building fortifications would probably fallen under the same fear.

Good morning 👍 Some videos filmed by russian soldiers show massive russian casualties, bodies everywhere, some look to be weeks/months old. Some trench fighting go pros from Ukrainian soldiers show very Ill equipped,trained russians that clearly had no idea what they are doing and will probably never be missed or counted by russia. My opinion on Ukrainian figures based on the many videos i watch is that they are probably quite accurate, maybe even a little low in some cases.

When it comes to attacking trains ... in the Second World War the allies used fighter planes against train engines and took them out with gunfire. Has anyone thought about using FPV drones or loitering munitions against train engines ? The sounds like it could work as well.
They probably have, but why? There are so many electric locomotives that it would take a long time and they are easily replaced. Way easier to hit the electric plants and stop them all.

You keep trying to multiply based on GDP.... Sadly that doesn't matter in terms of war. Like if someone is getting punched 1000 times. One guy is bigger and blocks 500 punches protecting the little guy. And another guy half the size blocks 100 punches (attempting and hoping to block more but not in the same weight class to even compete so they just go through helplessly). You don't multiply the smaller guys blocks by 2 since he's smaller and weaker. 400 punches still got through... The big guy still blocked 5 times more. Good effort though UK. But can't just multiply your contributions because in reality that's not how it works on the frontline.
It completely matters in terms of what individual countries CAN do and whether they are pulling their weight comparatively. It is a tool of comparison.

Jonathan, every day we hear about Russian losses, in personnel and equipment, and how many have been killed, how many wounded, questioning who made the estimates, and then question the accuracy of the numbers. But this is like going to a sporting event and the only score you see is for the visiting team. We have no ideas of the actual losses for the Russians, but have even less an idea of the Ukrainian losses. About a year ago, I presented a demographic analysis that showed that Russia has 4.4 time more people than Ukraine to throw into the war, and suggested that Ukraine must remove at least 4.4 Russians for every Ukrainian removed from the battlefield. When commenting on what is sustainable in this war, I think it is now probable that Ukraine is in very big trouble, due to their manpower shortages. I reach this conclusion with some very simple math: the Ukrainians claim to have removed around 472K Russians from the battlefield. If the 4.4:1 ratio is to be applied to that number, then in order for Ukraine to in a position of "holding their own" against the Russians, the Ukrainian losses would need to be less that 107K (477K:107K is approximately a 4.4:1 ratio. The US defense department estimates the Ukrainian losses to be nearly 200K, which makes the Ukrainian effort unsustainable, and what we are seeing now at the front lines is the result of that unsustainable effort from Ukraine. They need more men, and it appears there may not be enough men to throw at this.

There is absolutely no basis for that statement. Trump already had a term as President, so you can judge his actions from that. Did Trump order the arrest of Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and their followers? Did he get conservative prosecutors to return multiple indictments against Hillary and Biden? Did he have his critics sent to dismal prisons where they ended up killed? Did he have any journalists or top business executives thrown out of upper story windows? Not at all. Biden's DOJ, in contrast, HAS mercilessly prosecuted numerous members of the Trump Administration, including massive dawn raids on the homes of advisor Peter Navarro and others. Further, and left wing prosecutors friendly to the Biden administration have assailed Trump with multiple cases that have no actual merit and are unsupported by legal precedent, yet they are tying Pres. Trump up in the middle of the campaign, and in one instance (the victimless 'fraud' case) came close to seizing the whole of his assets.
