  • I had always wanted to try soup dumplings and I finally got to try them recently in Chinatown in San Francisco. I gotta say, they were not good…? Maybe it was that restaurant we were at. I wanted to try more!! But the people I was with said it would be a waste of money to look for better ones, when we don’t know the signs of a great dumpling. I love fried gyoza, steamed gyoza, so I didn’t think it was the texture that bothered me. The texture was a bit weird, it wasn’t the soup that bothered me either. It was just all mushy and then super bland, no spicy sauce, not even soy sauce at the table. It was a weird sweet soy/ginger sauce. Indeed I have had that sauce before at restaurants but the flavors they served the sauce with were, all wrong. Wondering if you had any tips for someone trying to find a great soup dumpling. Anyone in the comments as well! I have wanted to broaden my palette into more Asian cuisine but, I haven’t been enjoying the places I jumped to try out. Maybe I’m missing something? I was always told, if they have the waving cat in front, the food should be decent 🤣It was not true for this place! I felt so bad because we sent our entree back as well….which was probably horrifying for the Chef. I told the others don’t bother, ask for a box and we will leave it. Food is personal in the culture!!! They sent it back 😔I was shaking in embarrassment until we paid the check. They charged us for everything, even the sauce 😂Not surprised in expensive Cali. Still wanna try a good dumpling waiting for it to cool off and go “mmmmmm”

    • Find them in a grocery store in your area like Trader Joe's or Walmart. If you like the frozen ones, ( which are decent) usually the ones from restaurants are 3x better and you just got a bad batch.
